Two golfers shared victory in the ninth round of the Gloucestershire & Somerset PGA Total Triumph Winter Series at Saltford recently.

Clevedon’s Luke Derrick and Knowle’s Mark Sanders both scored 39 points.

This secured them the win, finishing one point ahead of Giuseppe Licata from Filton and Long Ashton’s Kobe Adams.

Sanders was the first to score the winning total, beating the par by three with the help of an old Ping Zing putter from the 1990s.

Despite bogeys at the second and fourth holes, he achieved his first birdie at the sixth hole.

He then added four more birdies at the eighth, 11th, 13th, and 15th holes, giving him the winning score on his seasonal debut.

His back nine of 21 points was the best of the day, and he also claimed that sweep.

However, his sole possession of the lead lasted only about 10 minutes, as Derrick posted his 39-point haul from the next group on the course.

He opened with a birdie and then sank a long eagle putt on the drivable par-four sixth, reaching the turn with 21 points.

Although he made a couple of bogeys on the homeward run, birdies at the 13th and 15th secured him the win.

This marked the reigning Total Triumph Order of Merit champion’s second consecutive victory.

Playing partners Licata and Adams shared third place.

Adams started strong with birdies at the first three holes and was four-under-par with three holes to play.

However, dropped shots at two of those holes allowed Licata to match his score of 38.

Woodspring amateur Nick Mills was the only other player to beat par, returning 37 points to take fifth place.

Derrick’s win saw climb two places in the Total Triumph Order of Merit into second place, closing the gap on leader Ed Goodwin from Lilley Brook.

Captain Martin Liley from Wheathill dropped to third place, followed by James Keitch from Taunton & Pickeridge and Liley’s clubmate Mark Singleton in the top five.
