The first step to gripping the golf club properly is to hold the club out in front of you with your right hand just below the grip and your right arm extended out in front of you. The club should be at about a 45 degree angle and the toe of the club should be pointing straight up at the sky.
Now, take your left hand and place it on the side of the grip. The club should be connected to your left hand at the base of your index finger and just below the base of your pinky finger. Wrap your remaining fingers around the club and extend your left thumb down the grip just right of center.
A good check point – you should be able to let go of the club with everything but your index finger and the pad of your left hand supporting it. When you do this, the toe of the club should still be pointing straight up in the air. Far too many amateurs position the club improperly in their left hand and lose critical power and control.
Now that your left hand is in proper position, simply slide your right hand down the grip. You can unify your grip any way you want. You can interlock your right pinky and left index finger or you can simply overlap them. Overlapping is easiest for most people to understand. However, some of the best players in the world including Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus used and interlocking grip.
The overlap grip simply involves putting your right pinky in the groove created between the index and ring finger on your left hand.
Be sure to keep the club in the fingers of your right hand. Do not get the club down in the palm of your hand or you will lose the ability to create speed.
When your grip is complete, make sure the “v’s” created by the thumb and index finger on each hand are pointing somewhere just right of your belt buckle.
