Long Term ONLINE FITTED Takomo Iron Review – BRUTALLY HONEST!

Getting fitted for your golf clubs has never been more important in 2025. Today we have a long-term review of a set of online fitted irons. Christopher, how are you? Very good. Yourself? I’m all right, thank you. Guys, today we’re going to discuss online fitting. So, Chris got an online fitting for his Tacoma 301 irons. They look absolutely gorgeous, by the way, don’t they? And it’s a really interesting one because the specs on these are quite Well, they’re very interesting, Chris, aren’t they? How have you found them so far? We’re going to play a couple of holes today. We’re going to get into the bones of it a little bit. Throw some positives at you. I’m going to speak honestly and there might be a couple of negatives as well because I actually got properly retrofitted for my Tacomaos. And I absolutely love them. They’ve been the best diamonds I’ve owned in years and years. Obviously, they’re a budget head. The shafts are quite expensive for an upcharge. But Chris, you just trusted the online fitting. Yeah. So, I went for the online fitting. 15 questions. That’s a lot of questions. It is. is I mean a lot of it is obviously just asking male and female email address uh right-handed or left-handed. So they’re not obviously quite an important one. They are obviously very important that one but not too um obviously in depth with some of them but it fitted me for a KBS torque shaft which we know obviously they come with Tacomaos. Before I had a 120 stiff shaft. Yeah. We’ve now got a 130X. What a strike that is, by the way. Has that been the general the general feeling of the club strikes like that one? Yeah, I mean, again, they do feel heavy. They obviously do feel different, but they take a little bit of getting used to, but once you do, then they have performed pretty well, I must admit, guys. So, for me, they feel very, very heavy. We’re going to play a bit of a scramble today here at the gorgeous Lindrich Golf Club. By the way, it’s December next week. And look at it how good it is. Guys, get in the comments below. Have you ever had a club fitting in general? Have you ever done online fitting? Would you trust online fitting, Chris? How much did those irons come out to with the online fit? Were they more expensive or was it a free No, free fitting there. So, it’s just obviously trying to give you a recommendation. So, I’ve changed as well from obviously CBS in the top end and MBS in the CBS. All CBS. They told me it’s time that I’ve uh got to get a bit more forgiveness. Right. So, that’s quite an interesting one for you, Chris, there because I know how important feel and sound are to you as a golfer. I know that obviously the forge head in the Tacoma 301 does feel nice and soft and it sounds fantastic. What are your thoughts on the Caper 130? Because for a lot of people that’s going to be very very heavy, but actually when you look at Chris’s transition and you look at the the speed of the swing, you are quite fast at times, aren’t you? Yeah. So, it does feel heavy to swing obviously, but it doesn’t feel uncomfortable. No. Let’s see how I get on with it. Tell you what, that still felt absolutely fantastic. I’ll be interested to see how far down there that is in relation to Chris’s strike. We both struck those quite well. Mine launched a little bit lower. That could be because the shaft is too heavy for me. But obviously, the joy of an online fitting is it’s personalized to the golfer. As long as it suits you, yeah, then they’re doing the job perfectly. So, online fitting has come on leaps and bounds in the last few months and years. To be brutally honest, AI is massively going to help with that. I’m not a huge fan of AI to be honest and I hope it kind of regresses back to where it came from, but I’m sure it pretty much won’t. But Chris, I imagine the online fitting is only as good as the information you put in. So, if you put in that your seven iron club head speed is 200 miles an hour, then it’s not really going to work for you. So, what would you recommend to people who do want to go for an online fit before we get into the the bones of it? Well, I mean, there’s a lot of questions obviously to answer, but obviously be honest there. So, one of the questions was obviously how far do you hit? I think it was your seven iron. So, it was a case of every golfer in the world there is going to say 150 yards, aren’t they? Pretty much. Yeah. But then obviously also when you’re selecting what you want. So, one of the things that I wanted was obviously I like to see a lower ball flight in comparison to a higher ball flight. So, that probably had effect on the shaft and the stiffness, but then also you’re picking three different things. So, I wanted a forge feel. I also wanted some workability. But then one big thing I also wanted was forgiveness. So I think there was nine options on there, but forgiveness was still one because we don’t warm up. No, we we’re not most of those. Me and Chris, for people who don’t know, are both PJ professionals for 10 years now actually on my 10 year badge the other day. We we still play for enjoyment. Like we don’t really compete. We still teach a little bit and still work as PGA pros. But for me, one of the things that I think is really interesting, has Chris been fitted for the wrong set of irons on the Tacoma online fitting? We’ll discuss that as this round goes on, as you can see, he’s put about 20 yards on me there with his own fitted irons. So, Chris, one of the benefits that I got when I got fitted for my clubs at SGT, I actually have different shafts in my long irons in relation to the short irons. So, I have a lighter shaft in the long irons just to launch that ball a bit higher. Is that something you could do on the online fitting or is it a little bit more of a kind of copy and paste? It’s just a case I think they work off that seven iron still. Obviously, I think it’s just a case of you can just get the one shaft throughout. So, that’s one of the things where maybe you could get a better fitting at a a proper fitting center. But again, this is where can AI really help with that? Can the online fitting from Tacoma really start to move forward? And to be honest, if you’re in the market for these DTI and you’re wanting to buy them direct from Tacoma like you would do, how precise do they have to be? Because for the price at like five five 600 pound, yeah, I think how good do they have to be? Do they have to be up there with a really premium set of tailor made Callaway Ping? Or do they just have to work pretty well for someone who wants to test out the market? And they’ve got plenty of options even though it’s just in the KBS shafts. I must admit, you are putting on an absolute master class with them today. Cut that for a shot. That’ll do. When it came out with the 130, that’s a lot closer than what I thought as well, actually. That’s really, really good. Were you surprised? Have you ever been fit for 13 before? Uh, no. Never had a 130 shaft. So, again, certainly was interesting when they came. They did feel heavy, but we did see I got the ball flight that I wanted to. So far, so good this morning. And I have enjoyed them. That’s the main thing, right? I’ll have a go with my fitted nine iron. See if I can get any closer than Chris. I do feel like when your irons are your irons, certainly the specs are designed to help you play your best golf. And that’s what club fitting’s all about. He’s on for an own ball birdie here, Chris, with his his own irons. That should be good. If it just spins to the right, distance is pretty good. turf interaction wise with the Tacomaomas because this is a really interesting one I think as well. How have you found divot duty? Because we’ve both took a nice little kind of divot there and one of the things which I think especially the CBS do really well, they have this kind of shame off leading edge and that can really help generate that turfing traction you want. Yeah. And one also thing from the fitting is obviously that it is um the fit me for standard loft and lies. Yeah. So it hasn’t changed but I’ve still got the right interaction. So yes, you’re putting your height in there, but you and then they can also say right, okay, do you need them one degree upright, two degree upright? What do you need? They didn’t. They came out standard standard and we see that straight away turf interaction and strike is pretty good, right? So one of the goals of fitted clubs is of course consistency and knowing how far they go. That’s two fantastic shots in there at the second hole. And for me, try not to fall over the rope. For me, that’s one of the joys of any kind of club fitting at all. if you can go through the questionnaire, answer it correctly, and then of course a lot of people don’t have access to club fitting, do they? We’re very lucky that SGT is literally down the road from us. But realistically, if you want clubs that work for you properly, is this the best scenario for a lot of golfers? Chris, what would you have you got any anything negative yet? Because people are going to think this is just like, oh, no, like you say, the negatives are that it’s a lovely tripod you’ve got there, by the I know just carrying it around. Uh you don’t obviously have the ability to get different shafts. We also know with your direct consumers, we are limited to a KBS shaft. I’ve used a KBS shaft for quite a few years now. So it’s not something different. But maybe if you was a you’ve always had a project X, you’ve always as a you’ve always had a dynamic gold maybe or even later ones a modus. Yeah. You are going into a KBS. You might not have tried the shaft. So, it’s one of those things that But then if you’ve always been that guy, are you buying DTOC clubs at this price or are you probably going for the bigger names and or doing what I did and retrofitted? Yeah, that’s true. Obviously, that is an option with to go, aren’t they? You can just get the heads off the website. Quite a few of those. These we’ve left we’ve left two pitch marks. That was that it’s a similar thing with In fact, that’s online fitted as well, isn’t it? You put online all online fitted. Yeah. So, this was just a quick video. Three. You made three, James. Good effort. That’s a shame, isn’t it? This time of year. But, so this was I say properly fitted. This was fitted in person for me out in Oregon. I absolutely love it. There was a big discussion on lie angle with this and I think the guys did a fantastic job at lab fitting it to my stroke. And what I’m trying to do with the putter, how was the lab online fitting comparable? Because again, DTC brand, they’re just trying to make sure you spend your money in the right place, I suppose, aren’t they? Yeah. So I mean obviously not a cheap putter obviously if we go pricewise but online fitted sent a video in went online and picked obviously the alignment aids that I want to see down behind a golf ball picked the color obviously for lie angle they told you to get into your standard posture from this angle so down the line make some strokes and they would fit your lie angle to that so that’s obviously something they did I believe this is 71° so although it’s an online fitting there’s a little bit more of a dynamic aspect to it than just a questionnaire yeah which is where obviously online fittings have got I think a lot better. That’s for an own baller. Oh, he’s left it short. It was a good layup. It was the right line. It was a fantastic option. And again, I think yes, you’re spending probably a bit of a different a different brand aspect because lab putters are some of the more expensive putters you can buy, whereas term irons are the more budget irons you can buy. But still DTC so still offering that level of of fitting that level of making sure that you do get the right product. So, it’ be interesting to see for both companies what the after sales are like and if there is issues with it, can we resolve those and and really make sure that you’ve got the correct clubs in tow. Have I done the same? Oh, just a little bit of dew on the greens, isn’t there? This morning, guys, let’s jump on the next par three. We’ll discuss more pros and cons of these online fitted clubs. But do me a favor, get in the comments below, would you ever buy an online fitter golf club? Could you trust it? And this for me is a very interesting video because I’m picking Chris’s brains for this online fitting because actually we did an online fitting for my wife just the other day. She’s starting to get into golf. She to be honest, she doesn’t really play that much. So the online fitting for her is a lot more about the Q&As. And I think that’s where for the beginner golfer, it really is perfect cuz when we first started reviewing Tacoma all those years ago for the 101s, they weren’t tour players clubs. They weren’t played by the likes of the Brian Bros and people like that. They were played by people who just wanted affordable clubs at a decent price. Yeah, very true. Which I think there’s a lot of positives to it. Again, another negative one thing obviously if you have different size grips, that’s something that you can select. But without trying different grips, if you’re a beginner golfer and you think you don’t even think that Do you like those grips or would you change them? Cuz for me when we did the fitting at SGGT, I very much went for slightly thicker. Still Lampkin, so actually the same same kind of grip, but mine’s a little bit thicker. And of course, I’ve added that dash of color to it as well. And I think that’s more an inerson thing. You can see, right, will a grip make a little bit of a change. SGT, they can quickly take it on and off. Lawrence the other day told me a grip makes a huge change to your release pan. So if your grip’s too thin, you might well work the club over a little bit too much. If the grip’s too thick, it may mean that you leave the face open. So it could could be a huge detriment to your goal. Again, that’s the thing of somebody who’s buying Taccomos. If you’re buying Taccomos, are you thinking that much about it? Are you just wanting to get some affordable clubs? Yeah, that’s the big question. I think you should be doing both affordable clubs, but also the right ones. It’s a ball striking masterass today. Great shot. That’ll do. What club was that? Six iron. Have I got enough of the seven? Yes. It’s down. See, what what your thoughts on the finish? Do you like the Do you prefer the copper or do you prefer the Again, I like both finishes there. I think again what they’ve done is a great job of just how they look as well. I mean, they don’t look affordable. I’ll be interested to see if the Como ever have a a new cycle of irons because I think years. Yeah, they’ve been around a long time. They’ve always look fantastic. Iron technology doesn’t really move on that much, does it? If it isn’t broke. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, some would say. Is it a good one of these for me then, Chris? Yeah. Wind’s helping. Carbon copy to yours, I think. There. Yeah. Social. You know what we’ll do, though? Leave the course in a better condition than what you found it. Right. So again, when we talk about online fittings, we talk about how close can you get to the flag and just how how pin high can you be, how accurate can you be with that front to back dispersion. And that’s one of the things where I feel like having the premium shafts helps massively. And both Lab and of course Tacomao offer premium shafts in the putters and the irons and the drivers in the case of Tacoma and wedges and things like that. So, one thing I do like is that it is a product that you know. So, when you do the online fitting, I assume you can tweak it if you want to. It’s not like right order these now. Well, it actually gives you two options. It gives you for me I think it gave me all CBS or the option to have the combo set of CBS and MBS like I did before. Yeah. So, this is one big thing obviously that I saw which was a case of right, well, I’ve got two options. I don’t have to rush. They’ve got a similar shafts. So that’s really you’ve got options still and it’s for you to decide cuz you might be like like I was a little bit I still like MBS in the bottom end of the bag but I’ve enjoyed the CBS. Is that what would you say your biggest surprise has been when it comes to the online fitting in general? Because when I went and got my 301s I wanted like a bladed pitching wedge. So it meant that I end up getting bladed wedge 9 and eight iron which I’ve ended up being okay with. Yeah. But is that one of your biggest surprises? How good and workable the Yeah, I thought you might get a few more flies. It might not be as consistent as the uh MB, but I’ve been surprised that it’s been fantastic to be fair. I’ve enjoyed them. Right, we’ve got a quite a length of bird up here about 20 30 feet. Let’s see if we can roll it in. This is Chris’s T-shot again. So, it’s another attempt at an own baller with these online fitted clubs. And I think it’s almost like if if you have the option to go and get properly fitted, that is always what we would recommend. If for some reason you don’t have the budget for a proper fitting, you don’t have the accessibility to go and get proper fitted all the time or the Exactly. All those things add up and that’s where I feel like why these DC brands are doing so well. When they first came to the market, they didn’t offer DC fitting. It was a case of right, order what you want and go with it and work off maybe fittings of the past or order off fittings or clubs you’ve tried. At least now they are offering something to help with that. Got to turn. Shame. Oh, it tried, didn’t it? It tried. Right, one more hole to come. Can we get under par? And I think there’s a bit of a bombshell to come as well because we had a discussion in the car on the way here and we’ve not approached it yet. Approached approached discussed I don’t know what I’m talking about. Well, right, Chris, a phenomenal drive off that T with the Tacoma driver. Now, was the Tacoma driver online fitted? Is that something we can do yet or is that still to come? Do you know what? I don’t know. It wasn’t online fitted, but I didn’t see it on there. I think it was more just the irons so far. So when it comes to I mentioned earlier about a bombshell now I think it’s all good and well this but one of the things which it didn’t recommend to you was wedges. Yeah. So gapping obviously we it did give me obviously four iron down to pitching wedge which we know is a standard Tacomao set. From there it doesn’t necessarily recommend that you could go for a 50 because now we know we’ve got a lot more options in those sky forges. I put this out there. I think as a product when they clean that’s disgusting that by the way the wedges are as good as anything they perform really really well I think so yeah I think they did a great job full face screw something I like but if it doesn’t suggest it so obviously picking those wedges you’d have to know exactly what loft your pitching wedges so if you got a different set again you have to think about that and this is something that you might not take that’s been updated at the time of filming we’ll put it on screen now but when you ordered it wasn’t was it no correct how close can we get with this pitching wedge What a lovely strike that is. And this is something where you mentioned about the wedge not being the blade, but I do feel like you this is one of your favorite clubs. You use it. I think personally you use it far too often. But you do just use it all the time, don’t you? Yeah. I think it’s very easy to fight in. I do think obviously it’s very easy to control, which is why I’ve used this from everywhere. I’ve got a ball here, mate. I’m gonna say it took me ages to try to get it that out. Sorry. Um I’m going to go full blue 56. If we can get it close. It’s as good as I’ve got. That’ll do. Good shot. Right. Let’s see if we can get under par. So yours has done well there. It has, hasn’t it? Cuz it was a long way away for a 56. I did think that at the top of the back swing, but when it comes to it, Chris, what would you say the biggest con of online fitting is and the biggest pro of online fitting is? Biggest pro, nice and easy, time efficient. You don’t need to go anywhere. You can do it nice and quick. You are going to get a pretty good fitting. I’m very happy with my clubs. If I spent £600, I’d be happy. Obviously, con is you don’t have that many options. Yeah, you’re going down a very narrow path. Would you say that’s a DTC thing anyway? I think that’s a D2C thing. Obviously, you are going to be just set to what they’ve got, but obviously if you’re choosing Are we going with mine? Are we go with yours, mate? Yeah, you we’ve literally used every shot of Chris today and that shows just how consistent it has been with them to be fair and I have noticed in the next 100 tour, which is where we kind of came across all the Tacoma online fitting and things like that to use them for. Yeah. You have been very consistent since that. Y before that there were there wasn’t a fitting. It was just a set of ordered clubs and the specs were different to what you thought you should have ordered. Yes, very different really when you look at it now obviously with flex and with weights but go. It was in the middle again. I will get it there. It’s funny actually because when you look at we’ve got the same irons essentially, but they’re totally different irons. And mine would probably cost with those shafts and that about 2,000. Yeah. Maybe a bit more. And yours have cost 600. 600 quid. Yeah. The only thing you would say after that is, well, would you go secondhand market? But I think even that it’s almost a bit like, well, they’re not destined to be right for you as well. Stay. Oh. Oh, it’s just shoved at the end, doesn’t it? Guys, we’re going to finish this to see who’s got the best irons with the nearest pin on the next hole because it’s my favorite hole in the golf course and we have to film it. Okay, 11th hole. Christopher, what you going with? I’ve got six iron. Six iron. And are these all I should have probably asked this right at the start of the video. Standard loft. I know you said lion gole standard. Yep. Standard loft and line. So, no changes there. Again, they haven’t tried to do anything there. Obviously, with them being forged, if you wanted to, you could go and get them tweaked, but yeah. Are they standard length as well? Yep. Standard length, which is again, you put your height in there. So, I put six feet in there. It came out with six feet. Standard length. You might get yours a little bit shorter, but it’s only going to take some distance off. It’s another great strike. It’s just left out to the right. I think I’m in here. Oh, it’s another greening rag though with a Would you say that was an average shot for yourself? Yeah, it was a little bit heavy that to say the least. Have I got enough of seven? Yeah. A wee bit heavy. Some would say I’ll get on gardening duty. Right. Come on, James. Stand up. Your clubs cost a lot more than his. Means you’re better. They’re not shorter. Oh, he’s giving it some past. It’s a bit thin. It’s a thin to win as well. That get up. Oh. Oh, I don’t know. Oh, look how thin that was. You gave it that, didn’t you? Yeah. Let’s go and see who’s one. I love this hole. Great. I think we’re moving next week. Right. Although I’m over the moon with how that ball’s finished for such a bad strike. Chris, you’ve hit the greening rag. Victory. Oh yes.

  1. Club fitting have never been more important ? Less than 1% of golfers need a fitting because the rest don’t swing the same every time and just need lessons and practice

  2. Great Job, James! I’ve been begging you for this for a couple of weeks now! For bringing it to me, you get a Hype!
    Thank You!

  3. I had gotten online fitting about 20 years ago, and it was ok. After getting fit in person a couple of months ago, I wouldn't do an online fitting again. The in person was so much better and more precise

  4. My 301MB's come in a few hours (New club day) with X flex graphite shafts and 3 degrees flat and oversized grips (I play Jumbomax so we will see if these are large enough) I really have never been more excited for a new set. Jesus Christ is returning soon I hope all who read this turn to the Lord in these last days!

  5. I know my specs and shaft preference so I bought the 301 CB, the best feeling clubs I have had för years….
    performing realy well

  6. Ordered a Takomo driving iron and the shaft broke the first time I was hitting it on the range. Emailed Takomo and they took care of me immediately. They received a bad batch of shafts. Very good customer service.

  7. James, you ever think the on-line fitting will be able to use the data one captures from their home SIM?

  8. I have the 301cb and I’m super happy with them. If you like the iron head, which is very soft and great profile, you can order the heads and get them specifically fit to you.
I’m just so impressed with the alloy in these heads. At $72 per head, it’s not too bad.
One complaint I have with Takomo, is that the grips run small. The “tape” underneath is super thin and incredibly difficult to remove. They should use a thicker tape so the grip reflects the actual size.

  9. Its a shame they don't supply a more customisable set for us 75+ year old golfers who struggle to hit 4 and 5 irons.

  10. I just ordered 301cbs last night! I'm playing Titleist 735 combos right now. I have the takomo wedges and love them. So I figured it's worth the risk. Can't wait to try them.

  11. I've just had one season with my online fitted Takomo 101's. Have been very happy with them. Had in person fitting a few years ago, and ended up spending way too much for clubs that didn't perform any better than off the shelf irons. Also have a online fitted LAB and absolutely love the DF3 I have.
