In this video, I take a 36-handicap golfer out for an on-course lesson after TikTok golf tips completely derailed his swing and his confidence. As a PGA professional, I’ve seen firsthand how online advice—while well-meaning—can do more harm than good when it’s not tailored to the individual.
We’ll break down the key issues in his setup, swing mechanics, and course management that have held him back, and I’ll give him clear, simple fixes he can actually use. From tee to green, we work together to rebuild his fundamentals and get him back to enjoying the game again.
If you’ve ever been overwhelmed by too much golf advice or felt like your swing was worse after trying to follow online tips, this is the video for you.

[Applause] Welcome back to the channel, guys. In today’s video, we’re going to try and save Lee from quitting golf. If you watch the hybrid comparison against this five, I think it’s safe to say, you know, you you’re not far from packing in. And I won’t blame you because he’s trying so hard to get better at golf. You’ve actually hindered yourself by watching online tuition videos. So, I’m here with him today, PJ professional, and I’m just going to try to give you some very basics for anybody that’s completely lost and just struggling making contact with the ball like you know, we saw earlier. Um, so yeah, we’re going to move on forward TE’s. We’re going to play off the forward TE’s because obviously you’re struggling with your golf. No point playing off yellows or whites. And uh we’re going to try to do a bit of an onc course lesson. All right, so we’ll start off. You’ve obviously got your driver and let’s start off with some key things to think about. And what I would say is if you just show us your practice swing, Lee. So one of the biggest things is balance. So just show us your practice swing. So just watch just do that again and just watch what he does to his front foot when he’s swinging. And I don’t know if he’s going to do it again now. I’ve mentioned it, but he’s uh So your front foot’s your pivot. So take a take a really broad stance. I want you to take a wide stance. Can you square your feet off a little bit as well? That’s better. And I want you to feel like your left cheek is glued on the back edge of the golf ball when you’re swinging. So, you turn your shoulders around your left cheek. You’re pivoting around your left cheek so that you don’t sway and that front foot stays really flat. So, we want to try to get a little bit more of a solid station. So, if I put That’s better. So, you’re turning and you’re pivoting around a spot. So, there’s not much sway. So, that’s all I want you to think about on this next swing is a broad stance. So, you’ve got big, you got a lot of balance, you know, w as wide as your shoulders. You’re a you’re a broad guy, so you need plenty of balance. So, your insides of your feet, guys, should be on outsides of your shoulders. And keep that front foot nice and flat to the surface. Left cheek glued on the ball. And I don’t care how you hit it. I always just feel like you’re you’re not swaying. and the contact there even though you got your slice and we can figure that out because obviously that’s to do with club face but your your connection was solid that were good what I’m going to say to you is because it’s an on course lesson I don’t want you to run before you can walk you know you might be looking at the distance to the flag here I’m thinking let’s start to get some scores on the card you’ve been making eights nines and tens let’s make sure that you’re not pulling a freewood out or a hybrid and you know potentially Get yourself in this bother here. Let’s aim up towards these conifers with something like a seven iron like an eye percentage shot. Are you paused? Are you off balance? You see how your feet have twisted? So, we’ll try again on the next shot. What’s your trolley saying distance-wise? 82. So, it’s firm. So I think if you were to land something you know what you thinking the wedge your wedge but not a full wedge. Yeah. If you land it somewhere sort of 70 yards 70 80 yards you’ll be fine. Have a practice swing. Always have a practice swing so you can practice brushing that surface. Get your confidence. Did you get enough grass? Cuz that one would have been a little bit thin. So, concentrate on making sure you brush the floor. After. So, you need a little bit more. That’s what you’re here for. Some nice solid base. Don’t let that left cheek move off the back edge of the ball. And concentrate a little bit more down. That’s better. So, that feeling of swinging down a little bit more. And as long as you turn, you’ll be fine. You won’t hit the floor too heavy. So, just drop another one. Have another couple. I’ve got a couple. You could set back up. But what I would say is, can you play a different club rather than playing a full swing? You’ve got to be able to get the ball round. You’re on the course. You with your mates. What other clubs have you got that you could have used that possibly easier? Could it an A tiner? Probably that chipper. You got your chipper, aren’t you? So, give it enough effort that you’re going to be able to land it 50 60 yards. I’m not even hitting that. Well, top that shot. Come on. Let’s just remember we’re trying to keep it simple. I just want you to finish in good balance with your feet. Show me your practice swing again. So, left cheek stays behind the ball on the back edge of the ball. Hold that finish like a pro in balance. So, you’re not swinging too fast. I want you to be able to hold a good finish. That’s it. Do that once more. Get your club all the way around when you’re doing it. You wouldn’t do that. So here, that’s it. Yeah. Okay. So it’s round. You know, you got your club round here. Release your club. Make sure your club’s released. Otherwise, you will slice it. So it’s literally just reminding Leah a simple shape of swing. That’s better. So just going really back to basics. He’s got that many forks. I’m just trying to create a simple shape of swing and keep his feet in balance. Lovely shot. Best today. That’s your best shot today. Doesn’t take much, does it? And that’s just thinking of like the simplest form. You’re literally thinking of the shape that your club should be moving around your body. Yeah. You know, you did a couple of practice swings there where you were swung to there. What’s that about? So, just thinking about that club working around the arc. Yeah. On plane, turning and keeping some sort of balance in your feet. I mean, you’ve been finishing with your feet like this. So trying to create a station. Feet balance. Yeah. Left cheek stays in place. And you’re going to turn your shoulders and create that shape of swing. And then hold your finish in balance. High hands. Another one. Lovely strike. It’s away. It’s a good connection. It beats them last two T- shots. Yeah. Right. I’m not going to say anything to Lee. I don’t want to over coach him. It’s easy just to keep sort of really tells someone what to do. But sometimes, you know, he’s got to a few bad shots and a little bit of freedom. So, you’ve got 150 yards downhill. I think anything pretty much over that bunker is going to get to green. He’s got this like low percentage shot here where he’s playing a hybrid which he’s got to really land that on the green otherwise it’s not going to stop. Anything short will bounce through. A bit of a course management issue I think here. Why am I doing this? Get Get a a seven or an eight Lee or any anything stronger than a nine iron just to get over that bunker. Lovely shot. Great ball. What did I do different? Yeah, the right club. So that would have been Lee there for two if he’d have used right club for his second. He would just for me he’s using a low percentage shot. He’s not playing well at the minute. So he should have been taking pressure. Oh, he should have been taking pressure for himself by just hitting a shorter iron. Something he’s comfortable doing. I mean he only had to land it maybe 120 yards and he were going to be on. So you’ve got that for a par. Well, we’re up for a bird then caddying for you. Yeah, you nearly chipped in for birdie. See if you can all it then. I’m going to I’m going to coach you down last all and tell you what to hit and see if we can get a good score for you. Well done. Could have been a par. Don’t hit it yet. Hold on. Hang on. See what happens. You’re not I’m not in your way. Look at that. I don’t even see it. Where did it go? Pear. You got to greenly. Uh. Oh, no. 109 set up at front. Well, it’s very tough to get there then, ain’t it? So, I’m just going to hit my hybrid, Dandy. Hybrid. Okay. Where’s your start line? Cuz this tree looks like it could be in your way. I’m just going to go right in between that and bell. Right. Okay. Right. Can you just hit a seven iron? That’s it. Just even aim left of that tree if you want. A little bit left. It’s not going to reach the trees on sort of left hand side at fairway with seven. So you can start the ball more left then. Lovely shot. Better. You could start that more left because you knew if you hit it straight it weren’t going to go in trees other side. Yeah. What club is it? Eight. That’s better. Look how easy you hit that straight off green. Just crept through, but strike would better. Let’s see if you can make a five with my ball up and down. Steady. Come on. Okay, tap it in. At least you finished the old. You’ve got a score. Definitely a tough out course today. Um, and what I would say is it’s been difficult off backer. Definitely you’ve got a lot of swing thoughts swimming through your head at the minute. I think you’ve watched far too much online. Um, you know, stuff like you said to me earlier lining it out of the tour, you know, just silly. I don’t know. You picked Where have you that one from? I’ve seen you seen on internet. You obviously try lots of different things. What what they did say is if you hover your driver Yeah. ball is in middle. When you put it down, it goes to toe to to eel. So if you aim it off floor to toe it and it has been working for me to be fair. Look at them. Yeah. But I just I think you’re bringing too many like things that too many things into the equation, you know, like too many unnecessary things. But I think I would have I mean personally sometimes I like to have a week off golf, you know, when I’m when I’ve run myself into a bit of a a place like this. have a week off golf and then good at driving range and just concentrate on hand eye coordination making good contact with ball. Um I think when you watch this video back you might just see and I think you guys will have seen at home is when you are in a bit of a state like this is just playing easier shots to hit playing lower percentage shots uh just to get round. I know it’s not ideal and I know you can hit a good hybrid and that situation last you know three four weeks ago you’d have smashed your hybrid and being at side at green wouldn’t you? Yeah. But you’re not there today and you’ve got to just get round. It’s it’s not how bad I’m playing, it’s how bad I’m playing uh in comparison to two week when we’re in swing. But you think about what’s happened in that time or like what what’s been happening. And I just think you’re getting far too stuck into following tips and stuff online and maybe I’m playing too much cuz I’m I’m a snook player as you know and when I play regular you get too good. So you you play the audacious shots when when say I have a month off. Yeah. You you keep it simple. Yeah. And and you you you win because you It’s a great point that because I can I can relate that to pool when I’ve not practiced. I can turn up and get through a game and win because I’m playing simple pool. If I try to, you know, once I’m playing regularly, you try and like you said, you pull try and push do too much. And I think that relates to golf as well. But yeah, another tough video with Lee and I hope you don’t pack in. You know, we’ve had you playing some decent golf and now you’re a member here at Graange and you’ve got a chance to play more regular. I think you will get it back, but you’re going to hit lows in golf like this guys and you all have been in them places where you think you want to pack in makes you feel like that. It’s once you do to I mean I did a good drive on first followed it up with which if you your course management if you would have told me to uh me wedge we were talking about that weren’t we? Yeah, you you hit two great shots. He got within 100 yards and he went for this 100 yard shot. He had to go over that corner. There were a ditch to go over. There were all sorts really. You should have chipped out and chipped on and it went downhill from there really. But yeah, so take some away from it, keep it simple and then and then try and regroup, I think. So I think have a bit of a break from golf, good at driving range and let’s get you back on course. But you’ve got to try to keep your golf thoughts very simple now and just get back to, you know, you can hit a ball, but you you’re concentrating on things that are unnecessary. You’re forgetting the simple things like that. Just the shape of the swing even. You’re not even following through on your swing properly or not finishing in balance with your feet planted to floor, you know, spinning off your feet. Simple stuff like that’s gone through a window because you’re overthinking silly things like But anyway, I hope you’ve enjoyed the video, guys. Lee’s obviously always a pleasure to have on channel. Mhm. And I’m sure you’ll get your golf back hopefully. Just stop watching them Tik Tok videos. Back to basics, mate. Back to basics. Basics. We’ll see you in a few days time. Bye.

i feel his pain i had the shnaks for 3 years and when i say the shanks i mean every shot, i did play of around 12 at the time !
I agree he is playing too much and getting too good and its destroying his game
Im really sorry Lee but I did laugh out loud around the thought process on the 2nd shot to 18 "Im going between the tree and the bell". Im off scratch and Im not thinking about going between the tree and bell from there. Listen To Gary and above all keep it simple, use your shots to get to the green, the handicap system is designed to give you shots to get to the green, it isn't, I'm on a shot so i make green in reg and then 3 putt for 2 points, handicap assumes we all 2 putt and gives you the shots to get there, so if you get 2 shots on a par 4 your green in reg is actually 4 shots. Overtime confidence will build and your hcap will drop Good luck!
Oh, I love this Gaz. I can feel the pain of any golfer that is at their wits end when they can’t get the groove. We have all been there and im so in awe at your lovely manner. You are exactly what the game needs Gaz. Everyone stars somewhere and where would the game be if people didn’t feel supported in trying and wanting to do their best. Bravo mate!!!!!
A playing lesson is the way to go., a lesson at a range on a mat is almost a waste of time.
what a great common sense video many thanks
Well done on remaining patient and positive Gaz, Lee needs to clear his mind and ditch the anger.
Started by watching these tips on youtube before moving away from them and not returning
We have all struggled playing this beautiful game Lee, keep going and listen to Gaz
Keep going mate.
The last 8i you hit and through the green is the one you need to watch back imo, controlled swing with tempo and flushed.
As a older golfer I have began to swing slower and not trying to murder the ball might help
Hang in there Lee! Like everyone has said we've ALL been there! It is amazing to me in this game how sometimes I can stand over the ball thinking I literally don't know how to swing the club to hit this ball! And I agree to be careful about too many different tips from Youtubers. It seems to me like there is plenty of totally contradictory advice out there – and I think it really boils down to finding a simple swing that works for your physical self. My big effort lately that might relate to you is relaxing. That means grip, arms, shoulders, torso . . .. just everything. I always think at the last moment my subconscious makes my hands do something to "be sure I hit it right" and it screws it up. When I can relax and let the club do it's thing without me interfering it seems like I do a lot better. Thanks for being willing to let us watch your efforts to clean things up. Between you and Gaz I know you'll do it. All the best!
Gaz is right. Keep it simple. Both in swing thoughts and course management. All the best Lee 👍
We all struggle at times Lee.
Listen to advice, follow it, practice and it will start to turn around in no time at all 👍
Good to see Lee stick it out that day, few tips and he was striking the ball again with the irons, stick with Gaz and don't listen to other tips you hear, to much info is too much to think about 🏌️
Lee, I know very very well , that feeling with : duff, duff, shank, airshot, skull, top.
It's very frustrating and annoying watching or hearing others improve here,
while I seem to be backwards fast 5, 6 or 7 over on holes in the blink of an eye lol.
The funny thing is per the stats chart thingy, I'm a 10 handicap in putting, but playing off 30+ hcp go figure !
He would benefit from a shorter shaft and a more flexible shaft
I’ve been there , just about getting more consistently now , still tee off with a 7 or 5 iron tho
Good work coach
Just stick with a 7 iron to keep in play for now it works for me
Thanks Lee for putting yourself out there for this. Plenty of people need to see this rather than watching the pros.
Some good tips In there Gaz great video
Keep going Lee and keep it simple, it’s not just the golf but the fresh air and time with your mates. As someone who used to play at least twice a week, I haven’t been able to play for over two years due to illness and injury and you don’t half miss it when it’s gone. Be it good, be it bad, keep smiling and enjoy !
Good job, we've all been there and struggled. Golf is the hardest game on the planet. We are not robots, I played Rhos on Sea at the weekend had a good round on Saturday and then on Sunday I played rubbish. Just one of those days and can't explain why. Keep going Lee, don't quit.
Surely you fix his fundamental’s? His grip is poor, try Tommy Fleetwood 3/4 swings and nudge it round for a while
