Yosuke Asaji became the first player from Japan to win the Moutai Singapore Open in nearly 50 years today – after he beat Korea’s Jeunghun Wang on the first hole of a sudden-death play-off.

Asaji made a birdie putt from six feet in the play-off, on the par-five 18th on the New Course at Singapore Island Country Club, after Wang found water with his second and ended with a six.

Well, it’s been a fairly eventful start to the afternoon. This is Suman Lee at the par three fifth led by two going into the final round. Back-to- back birdies for the Korean. He moves to 16 under. And James Payatt had a bogey-free round of 67 yesterday. Bogey the very first hold today. added a birdie at the third and this T-OT at the fifth will set up his second birdie of the round moving up to 16 under par. Yosuki Asagi who put in the low round of the day yesterday with a 65. The shot into the second hole will set up his first birdie of the round. At the very next hole, the man with four wins on the Japan Tour and 13th currently in the International Series Rankings will find his second birdie of the round. Oh, we’re wondering if anyone was going to get off to a hot start and separate from the pack. Well, I think we’ve got an answer. That’s three birdies in a row for Yusuk Assaraji. Brilliant iron play. And then on the par three fifth, another good T-shot and another four in a row. [Applause] And it doesn’t appear to have stopped this on the par for sixth. That’s five birdies in a row. Five under for his first six holes and he’s now established a threeshot lead. Well, we’re not exactly giving him a the trophy just yet, but that’s a stunning start. He moves to 19 under. James P on 16 under alongside Suman Lee. Then it’s Kieran Vincent, Ratan Wan Reachin, Bio Kim, Jazz Jin, Watan, and Jun Hong Wang all back on 14 under. But that’s a fivesot gap to the leader. What a start for Yuki Asagi looking to set up his second birdie of the round. Beautiful shot now. Thomas Peters. Yes. Good start by the Belgian. Oh, Ratin. Birdie the first, bogeied the fifth. But Birdied six and seven. Here he is on the par 38. 171 yds downhill. What a shot. Back to Wanosan for birdie at eight. Yeah, he’s got it going. The tai’s fourth bird of the round. Three in a row. Just a layup off the te just short of the penalty area, but just out of the rough, but that won’t bother him too much today. It is an accessible whole location even out of the rough. Nice part. Well, they got they’re doing what they need to do. Bo Kim and Jazz playing alongside Assari. They got to pile the pressure on. Meanwhile, where the real action is, Ratin middle of the fairway on 10. And another magnificent iron shot for five consecutive birdies. Well, when we saw Asagi do it early in the front n, I thought, well, that’s surely the only time anybody’s going to make five birdies in a row. We’ve just seen Ratin doing exactly the same. Brilliant golf. Now Scott Hen enjoying a nice day. Looking nicer. Oh, well done. Raten on to tie the lead. He’s got a chance. Goodness me. Oh yeah, what a run. It’s six in a row. Paul Casey on the short par for 17th birdie chance here for the Englishman. All good looking putts. Very good looking putt. Maybe it hasn’t been quite enough of those this week for Paul. So it just looks like it’s going to come out slow. There’s a little bit of help in the air and also coming from the right. 124 yds to this back pin. But just look for this one to maybe catch the top of the club face and come out with a little less force forward. It’s on a pretty nice line, but it needs a big kick. Oh, and it got it. It got it. All right. All uphill and into the South Korean from this point. That’s a great putt by Suman Lee. And you can see why he took so long with that opportunity. It goes in a three-way tie at the top and he knows that heading into the back nine. Tied for the lead. Being the last group, he has the option to always react. Not a difficult chip shot this down grain. First kick’s going to be to the left and then stay pretty straight on its way to the hole. He can be aggressive. Jon Wang, three in a row for him. He’s got plenty of green to work with. Although, he’s got a couple of ridges that he’s going to have to battle. Looking to just bump this into that first up slope, kill some of that speed, and trickle it down towards the pin. Hasn’t seen a birdie in a few holes now. Little downgrade left to right. Have to start this one online for it to have any chance. And he did. First birdie since that run of five in the front nine. Gets it back into the lead on his own. Bit of a double breaker here for Jazz. It should straighten out towards the end. Does it birdie putt for Yako Allers at the 18th? Well done. A beautiful round today by Yako Allers. A bogey-free 67. Contact is so key from lies like this. You just don’t really know how it’s going to come out. Oh, that missed a sprinkler head. It sounded rather thin. Back to the 17th T then. Oh, a little bit of a grimace. That’s why gone left down the hill. Let’s hope it’s not stuck in the tree. Putting straight into this wind, moving to his left. Oh, what a putt. Ah, you got to give him huge credit for that. That was so missable, but he struck it beautifully. Bratson on. Oh, what a time to make a bogey. Fourth bogey of the day on this hole. Ahead to 18. John Catelyn. He hit the shot of the day yesterday on 18. And look at this. This tops yesterday’s one. That’s terrific from John Gatlin. Right to left pot for Yoske. [Music] He can’t believe it. It’s a bogey. At least he needs a birdie. Oh, it’s run on. That was a great attempt though. Needs to post 19 under par in his head. An absolutely crucial putt for Ratin on Was Reach and must hold this for Birdie and hope that he’s done enough. That’s a good four. But how much damage has he done with bogey at the 17th after the very well played pitch from the left side of the screen? really judge the slopes and the contours very well. Unfortunately, played himself out of it after the double bogey on the par 313th. [Music] Well, not quite out of it yet. Just two shots behind Assaji. Breeze just down and off the left. I want to start this just left side of this fairway. And that is piped. can sort of pitch it maybe 15 18 ft short of the hole on that lower plateau. A little bit right. Use the slope to feed it up towards the pin. [Music] Oh, what a shot. What a shot. 30 attempt for Kevin for a round of 70. becoming a very consistent player. The Aussie. That’s another top 10 uper. Just a layup. Try and get it to the right half of the fairway. Well, anything on the fairway is good. Uh but he’s coming over the water from that angle. Should be a tap in for Wang to share the lead with Wish Reachen. [Music] He does. And of course, Sai all 18 under now. He’s got 88 yds downwind and off the left into a tucked hole location. Don’t want to flirt with short. There’s plenty of room behind this pin to maybe try and spin it back. [Applause] And just depending on the speed he’s going to hit this determine how much break he wants to play this. Can’t imagine he’s going to play this too aggressively though. Oh, that could be the tournament winning pot. Yosuki Asaji gets to 19 under a 67. Now all the pressure in the world is on Jun Hong Wang behind him. Oh, I haven’t pegged it. Just a touch over8 yds. Sitting nicely. It’s a releasing lie. He’s got the slope to play with on the right to feed it to the hole. If the number’s good, it should release. It’s okay. He’s given himself a decent chance. We’ve just seen that putt. Yeah. Not far from where Masaji hold is. Okay, Sumin Lee to force a dramatic playoff. Can he hold this for Eagle? Gave it a chance. [Applause] Looking good. Looking very good. What a putt from Jun Hong Wang under all the pressure. He holds his putt for Birdie and ties Yuki Asaji. We’re going to a playoff. Obviously, the only big no no here is to tug one into the fountains and started at the TV tower. Just hit his little cut. Oh boy, that’s on an aggressive line. I think it may be too aggressive. [Music] Oh, that is absolutely tragic for Jun Hong Wang. The one place he couldn’t go. Little bit more wind picking up. He’s got 108 with slight elevation. So, probably playing 110, but it is downwind. All he needs is to play that same shot that he did [Music] or better the quiet smile of satisfaction. So, Yoski Asaji has two parts to win the Mai Singapore Open and he only needs one. What a win for the Japanese. Yuki Asaji who becomes the first Japanese champion in the Singapore Open for 49 years. Yeah, dramatic finish to what has been a highly entertaining week here at the Singapore Islands Country Club. Yosuki Asaji, an international series champion.
