18 Holes at North Oxford Golf Club. A video tribute to a wonderful course, closed in October 2025 😢⛳

With the closure of North Oxford Golf Club
at the end of October 2025, I wanted to play   here to create a video tribute to the club and
the course and also for the members who have called it their home since its founding in 1907.
Sadly, the forecasted sunshine didn’t appear on the day I visited. And also, with the course
being surrounded by busy roads and a railway,   the sound quality isn’t as good as I’d hope for. I
really wish everyone involved with this wonderful, friendly club the very, very best for
the future. And hope this video reminds   you of the good times this super little
green oasis has given you over the years. quite sad teeing off here realizing
this won’t be here um in a few weeks time. So uh yeah, North Oxford Golf
Club sadly disappearing very soon. Hopefully on. So, poor drive, but
uh centre of the fairway. Bang on the 150 markers. Bunker on the
left and a view back to the tea. one bunker about 40 yards out.
Bunkers either side and a nice shot on Fabulous greens for this time of year. Just
wonderful condition. Nice firm feel under foot, but enough to stop the ball and
lovely pace on them as well. So yeah,   very very nice. And as here’s your look
back down the first here at North Oxford. Nice. Go. I think I can have that one. That’s a lovely
shot. So, uh, nice, uh, right to left green here, descending all the while. Little hollow
where I was, obviously the bunkers around   it. Three bunkers and then beautiful
awesome colours down to the tea there. Just about worth it. Oh dear, the start’s over. Okay. Poor strike. That’s okay. Couple of putts for a
five if you can. Would be nice. So, uh, obviously water to come over here. I was right in the corner
of the dog leg and then there is your view back up towards the tee. So, I found all sorts of,
uh, trouble down here. So, this is at the, uh, water just short of the, uh, green. So, probably
about 70 yards out here. Obviously, a little   stream going across and goes onto the other holes,
but beautiful weeping willows as well. Oak trees, lovely mature trees all the way around here. And
as uh many have said, a real loss. A real loss. Beautiful look back. Anyway, train
goes past, bunker on the left there.   But just immaculately presented that,
isn’t it? Just super stuff. Beautiful greens. Immaculate for this time of year. So, it
just stayed on its line. Didn’t deviate at all. And one last little look back down the hole. It’s   just wonderfully presented stuff.
And there’s the fourth tees there. So, uh, lovely little foot
bridge as well behind here. So,   tee markers there and then beautiful
little foot bridge that goes over the pond. Six, seven out of 10 maybe. So anyway,   two bunkers. So a slight left or right
slope on the green and then there’s the view back towards the tee. And that’s
picture postcard stuff there, isn’t it? So, another immaculate green here.
Bunkers there at the front. View back   to the tee and off to the fifth here and the
railway line beside and then up the fifth. Not   on the railway line which is good.
Fair few have gone down there and this uh 120 odd years history. So
obviously there’s the view down the fourth back to the competition
tees and right next to the railway Not the longest of drives so that’s absolutely
fine, stroke one so play those par fives. Anyway, you see the 150 marker, the bunkers there, railway
line all the way down this side and a view back towards the tees there. There’s a look in from
100, two bunkers on the left, one on the right, and a gently left to right sloping green. The
crane behind looks a little bit sort of like a omen, doesn’t it? For the course, the construction
just feeling very, very sad actually playing here. away. Yep. Nice up and down there. Is that stroke one? So that’s uh yeah,
lovely par. There it is. Another beautiful, absolutely immaculate green bunkers either side
like I showed you from further down. Looks like it’s up to the next par three. Yet more weeping
willows. Beautiful. And the autumnal colours. Back to the tee. So, it’s not only things just
like the golf course, but things like these   little mementos here in loving memory of Sandy
and Dorothy Sanders. Where does this now go? There’s a view of the green and train
going past as well with foot bridge,   a back slope there, and there’s
mine with a bunkers there. Look speedy. Yes. Oopsy. So, we just had a lovely chat with um two
members here again. having to find a new home. But uh yeah, it’s just sad and certainly you
know the older members here and imagine you know finding a new home not just for
golfing sense but uh for your friendship   and everything else it’s going to be a
real challenge. So, uh yeah, sad times should be okay. I don’t think it’s too bad. A dog leg left.
Looking at the graphic here. A long one again. Lucky. So, more conventional look back towards
the tea over the marker pole there. Excuse the wobble. And then round the corner is
probably from about 180 towards the green. Nice. Shame it didn’t go in for par. Oh well. The trees are going to get you around
here. Another immaculate green. Only just worm casts on it, which you expect this
time of year. They’re beautifully kept.   sort of like a figure eight shape almost.
Look back down the hole and you’re back towards the uh the clubhouse here. So,
uh just where those trollies are there. There it is over this side. Need to
sort this slice out super uh quickly. It’s okay. It’s enough. Should be fine. So, uh, obviously taking
the medicine by getting out of the trees like that. If you up to the green and you see the
150 markers there in the corner and back towards the tees where the gents trollies are again,
the big down sloping green here actually. Two bunkers on the left, one on the right with
a squirrel just about to go in it. There he   goes. And lovely contours in this green. Go on,
squirrel, knock my ball a little bit closer. Nice putt. Come on. What a par. Dear me. Eventful. But yeah,
I didn’t think I’d uh walk out with a four when I was uh where I was. But yeah, super
green on this. Really, really challenging. Great slopes on it again. Immaculate. Just
wonderful stuff that all the way down to the back there with the marker. And there’s your view
back up the hole and the squirrels over there now. Yep. Just enough. Apologies to the tee. That should be okay. Shank again. Don’t know what I’m doing with that. I’ll get my divot in a second. So the sun comes
out. Was hoping for a thumbnail there towards the clubhouse. But uh there as you look back
towards the tee in beautiful light there finally. Pretty good. Looks okay. Full blown shank in that. That’s fine, a reasonable 9 holes. Actually, the beautiful
green here back at the clubhouse. So, uh yeah, look back. Nice longish green
gradually descending down. Bunkers either   side and then you got uh the entrance there.
Putting green and pumpkins for Halloween. Really cool. No. This quick a tricky par three this actually a
long one 220 off the back boxes I believe and you see the green going right to left
there and a view back towards the tee. roll. Never mind. So, it actually confused me a little
bit here. You got green in front,   which presumably is now the
13th because by the 10th tee, uh the 10th green, sorry. You’ve actually got the
uh 14th, which then goes presumably behind you. Almost a miraculous two. A bit testy coming back.
But uh yeah, it was nice descending green. As you can see the pace on that actually spun back
on the green. Shows how good the quality of   the greens are. Three bunkers at the front.
Another one here and a view back to the tee. Yep. That’s a little bit of break in there. Yeah,   you wish you could putt on these greens
every week. Just brilliant. Sad times. Left, please. It’s okay. Nice uh echo off the uh gate there as
you hit it. Makes it sound better than it was. Not a bad shot from there though. Pretty good
actually. Another longish par 4. Very straight this one. Gradual slope right to left. Obviously
big hazard is the railway line. 150 markers and back towards the tees there. There’s a look
to the green from about 60 yards. Looks like   a little bunker on the left, one on the right.
gradual slope right to left and uh you’re right next to the little railway bridge here. So
just as I um line this putt up, I can hear   something coming behind me. So, quick look up
down the hole. See the railway bridge here. And that’s how close you are to the railway line. That’s a nice four. So, uh, yeah, I don’t usually, it’s
not showing off, they’ll put the, uh, take the flag out. It’s cuz, uh, you get a
better focus on the camera. So, uh, yeah,   changed my mind. I was going to putt it, but
there was quite a lot of grass to come over. So, uh, yeah, trusty 8 iron to the rescue. And
another quick look down the hole. There we go. tree up here. So, a nice look back, I believe.
I could be misremembering,   but that’s the Is that the stroke index
one back there? I’ll tell you in the comments. Beautifully presented again.
Lovely stripey tees. Immaculate stuff. Big kick right. Not sure what that hit, but it certainly went quite a way right Slanting fairway here.
Left to right. Quite a way out. So, I’d be surprised if I’m close to the green.
And then there’s a view back towards the tees. with a red kite calling. There’s
a view in from about 100 yards.   Couple of fairway bunkers here.
We’re about 70 80 yards out. And I think I’m actually on the green there.
Maybe. If it is, that’s a great shot. Pretty good. So, back here at the par
three with the tees here. And then as you look down the hole with the bunker
there. I don’t know where that ball’s   come from. And then there’s
down to the par three there. So, he’s done. shot in rather close to the trees that one. We’re back
here by the 10th again. Just had another lovely chat with some members again. And it’s just all
so sad just hearing the tales of disappointment that it’s got to close and course is in
such wonderful condition at the moment. not the longest but uh friendly members there. So uh there’s a view to the green and
there’s a quick look back to the tee. Keep going. Don’t have gone in. see in there. Totally thinned
it. Oh dear, that would have been a crime. A beautiful heart-shaped green here actually.
Uh down sloping as you saw and gathers at the bottom and then there’s a view down this
beautifully striped fairway back towards the tees side doors nice up and down again. So,
let’s just uh don’t know if this will work, but uh there we go. North
Oxford Golf Club, 1907 to 2025. Oh, another beautiful green on a lovely course. It’s okay, please. the right hand one five up there to deal
with. Just noticed actually there’s lots of subtle things about the care
and attention they’ve paid here,   but you can actually see the stripes on the
fairway actually continue after the ditch. So, props to the green keepers for doing that and just
lovely touches. So, yeah, beautifully presented. And there is your stripey look back towards
the tees there. So, as I mentioned earlier, there’s a little ditch that runs across. And
then here you’ve got the centenary bridge from 1907 to 2007. And here we are 18 years
later. But, uh, yeah, lovely stuff again. Nice shot. So, uh I like the arrangement,   the diagonal arrangement of these bunkers here.
Nearest one’s about 100 yards from the green, but it gives you a chance. You can either
play a fade or a draw if you can think that   highly of your golf and you’re that skilled
enough to play it. But yeah, lovely hole. Nice. I’m really glad I managed to get a
birdie on the card actually. Sort of uh yeah, makes me feel nice and happy for the course is
a little bit of a send off for me anyway. So, uh yeah, that’s lovely stripey hole here. So,
another beautiful green immaculate again held um my shot perfectly. So, it stopped and span again.
It’s lovely. And you view back down the hole. Yeah, another poor strike. So, it’s a quick look up to 16. Two bunkers
left, one right. I’m short there on the right. I naively forgot about the ditch, but managed
to avoid that. So, there’s a view behind the weeping willow again towards the tees. I do
really, really like this corner here. So,   uh, third green. Excuse the wobble
there. Third green and fourth tees with a pond and the rushes. Really, really
lovely stuff. That’s a super corner here. It’s a lovely shot. Just as lovely.
I don’t know if I’ll be able to   get This is a red kite that’s
directly over my head now. So, if I pan up. There we go. Beautiful. I
know it’s silhouetted, but uh magnificent. And there’s your view back down the hole again. That’s a nice up and down green yet again. Sloping back to
front. Lovely stuff. Don’t want this   to end. Just wish the weather had been
slightly better to make the video nice, but hopefully this is a nice uh little
video for the members here. Should be good a bit. That’s okay. See the bunker on the 150s.
Oh, I’ve broke my blue tee. Never mind. Nice. That could be quite good actually. See, I
had to punch that. The tree was in the way for playing a higher shot. So, uh, if that’s
got the legs, that’s hopefully quite nice. So,   obviously little tiny bunker there. And then
there’s a view back towards the tees here. Go on. More pace. But hey ho, that’s uh still
very very nice. So yeah, that’s uh lovely. Very happy indeed. So glad I come to
play actually. So uh it was worth the uh 2-hour drive or whatever it’s taken. But yeah,
another immaculate green. Lots of lovely memories for me and hopefully for others as
well. But yeah, very very sad still. Keep Hit the tree as long as you’re in. Hope it’s okay. makes it a bit of a challenge like Cardinal sin. So I was just behind there
and uh behind the centenary   garden sadly. A quick look back down the hole down to a five. So lucky Hit the ground. Oh dear. Shame to finish on a six, but uh I’ll just set up
to do an outro in a second. But that was lovely. So, I’ve just come over to the ninth
green just to get a nice backdrop of   the clubhouse here. And just, you know,
as I felt all around, it’s just sort of a um sort of sagging in the shoulders. It’s just
a real sort of sad feeling about um playing such a course like this. Immaculately kept like I’ve
said all the way around. Beautifully looked after,   loved, certainly loved by the members,
everyone I’ve spoken to. really sad as you’d expect um to be losing such a fabulous
uh course like this with so much history. You many of the members I’ve spoken to 20 30
40 years of experience and membership here uh and obviously not really knowing where they’re
going to go after this and you can see why it’s   a real bind to leave. You know, such a lovely,
beautifully kept course. Um as I was told earlier, not the longest course, but certainly it’s got
teeth. You know, I really struggled with some   trees on the front nine. Um sort of bashing
a few about. I think I played quite nicely in the back nine. Shame to finish with a
six, but um that doesn’t matter. You know,   it was just a really really lovely experience
that I have today. Uh thank you to Phil and the team as well for getting me on today. Really
appreciate it. Just sadly the weather didn’t play ball. I was hoping to get some nice sunshine to
actually show it off nicely. Um but just, you know, a wonderful, wonderful club, amazing greens,
brilliantly kept fairways. You know, like I said, beautifully loved, very well looked after.
I’m so glad I’ve played it. And like I said,   uh, a couple of times on the round, um, hopefully
this video will sort of come some way to sort of allowing the members to remember it nicely. And,
um, you know, it’s just my little sort of, uh,   tribute to them on losing their course. Um, again,
really, really sad to hear that, but um, yeah, hopefully in some way they can make some nice
memories and remember the good times that they’ve   had here on what is a fabulous course. And I would
love to recommend it, but um, sadly, October 31st, 2025, it’s uh, conspired to history. Really sad,
but yeah, I’ve had a lovely, lovely time here.

Founded back in 1907 as the first golf club in Oxford, North Oxford Golf Club is located just 3 miles from the centre of Oxford and has provided a golfing oasis from its 70 acre site over that time. It was originally a nine hole course but was extended to 18 holes in 1910. During 1934, Oxford University Press agreed to lease an additional 31 acres of land adjoining the remainder of the course. This course was then opened in 1936.

The land the course stands on is owned by Oxford University (through landowners including Merton College, Exeter College, and Oxford University Press). As such, the golf course was leasing the land from the owners and it was decided by the owners that the land is to be redeveloped to make way for over 1,000 new homes when the current lease expires in November 2025.

This obviously is devastating for North Oxford Golf Club and means the complete closure of the club and loss of the course, displacing its 450 members, a high proportion of which have been members for many tens of years. After reading several stories about this, I decided to try and play here before it closed to put together a little something as a memory of the course. After getting in touch with Phil and Sue at the club, I played here a few weeks before its closure, sadly on a grey day with the forecasted sunshine not putting in an appearance.

Arriving at the course, you immediately get a feeling of a friendly welcoming club, well loved and hemmed in by the surrounding bustle of suburban Oxford. Traffic noise is ever present here, but the course is a green haven, trapped by transport links on its borders. Flower beds and a beautifully tended vista from the clubhouse gives it a homely and loved feel. Mature trees abound, and line most of the holes and with them comes the wildlife, with plenty of birds and mammals also calling the course their home.

Teeing off, you’re greeted with tree lined fairways and know that accuracy is needed over power here. It is a shortish course, a par 67 5,764 yards from the whites, 5,548 yards off the yellows, with the ladies layout being a par 70 at 5,266 yards. That isn’t a reason to switch off though, as any errant shot can quickly find you in all sorts of trouble as I discovered a few times on my way round.

The greens here was an absolute pleasure to play on being a wonderful pace & consistency and perfect to hold shots on too. Count the number of times I say the word “immaculate” in the video! The fairways were also in great condition being nice and firm for the time of year. Several lovely holes on the course too with the 3rd being my favourite – a great challenge and beautiful too.

Everyone I spoke to at the club was so friendly, even when the common theme of conversation was about the sadness felt by all, and the uncertainty about their golfing futures. I felt incredibly sad for the older members here, many of whom have decades of membership at the club. I genuinely feel for them in having to look for a new home, mostly for their disruption in friendships and wellbeing the club has provided them with over the years.

Personally, I loved it here and am really glad I made the effort to visit and play the course to put this together. Hopefully it can act as a small reminder of what the course and the club has brought to so many over the years.

  1. Nice video, shame it is going.

Have you player Stockwood Vale this year? It is certainly a course you could play in winter.

If you filmed at Woodlands you would get the same road noise, which hasn't spoilt this video.

  2. Great video again. Re the slice: I found it round changing watching Justin Rose practise swings at setup, leading with arms and keeping back and shoulder to target. May help👍

  3. Sadly North Oxford Golf Club is due to close on 31st October 2025. As such, the golf course was leasing the land from the owners and it was decided by the owners that the land is to be redeveloped to make way for over 1,000 new homes when the current lease expires in November 2025. 😢
