Matti Schmid reflects on a bogey-free start to the week, elite ball-striking, and a clutch eagle on 18. He discusses recovering from illness, navigating big undulating greens, and his pursuit of an Aon Next 10 spot to qualify for next season’s Signature Events. Soft conditions and low wind created scoring chances — and Schmid took full advantage.

I’m good. Perfect. Bogey free heading into the weekend. How you feeling? Yeah, good. I mean, today I would say drove it even better than yesterday. Um, and yeah, didn’t I I don’t think I chipped today. So, yeah, I must have hit many greens. Um, so that kept life pretty stress-free out there today. What’s the key to navigating around this course, especially when it’s windy and a lot of scoring opportunities out there? Yeah, you still have to pick your spots, especially uh greens are pretty big and and very undulated, so you you have to hit the right section so you can give yourself good looks for birdie. And I feel like I did that today and yeah, throw some putts in, too. You just talked about preparation was a little bit different entering this week. Uh you were under the weather. What were you sick with or how did that change kind of what you would normally do? Yeah. No, me and my girlfriend, we stayed in Japan for for another week and after that, I don’t know, was a bit drained, I guess. Um, no, a bit sick, but I feel a lot better now. I feel uh fresh and um had a short but good preparation I feel like and yeah, no, I’m excited for the weekend. Had a good season, four top 10s, a runner up finish. What’s the push to be getting into those signature events for the following year? Yeah, obviously that would be huge. Uh we all know how how big those are and uh the added points you can earn in those and obviously I also want to play the best courses against the best players. So that’s that’s a big goal for me. Yeah. Perfect.
