DJ Carey was a regular at high-profile golf events in the years before his arrest.

The disgraced former Kilkenny hurler, who was one of Ireland’s most well-known sports stars, certainly wasn’t a stranger to the finer things in life and was frequently spotted at some of the world’s best courses.

In 2007, Carey presented golf legend Jack Nicklaus, who is considered one of the best to ever play the game, with a hurl at Luttrellstown Golf Course in Dublin.

The American legend was in the Irish capital as part of his work as an ambassador with the charity “The First Tee”.

Back in 2002, Carey was also an “honorary observer” at the World Golf Championships which was held in Kilkenny.

He was also all smiles as he walked along the course with Italian ace Daniele Massaro during the Smurfit Kappa European Open in Kildare back in 2006.

In 2009, he was pictured laughing at with fellow hurler John Leahy from Tipperary at the FBD Golf Challenge.

In 2015, he posted a photograph of himself standing next to a crocodile after playing a round at Kiawah Island in South Carolina.

On Monday, Carey was jailed for five and a half years for the “reprehensible” defrauding of almost €400,000 from over 20 people while pretending to have cancer.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that the former GAA All-Star defrauded in total €394,127 and $13,000 US dollars from the injured parties over a period between 2014 and 2022. €44,200 has been repaid, leaving €349,927 and $13,000 US dollars outstanding.
