Does Kai Trump have an NIL deal?
Yes. In February, Kai announced her first lucrative endorsement deal with big-name golf equipment company TaylorMade. At the time of the deal, On3, a website that rates high school and college athletes, valued her name, image and likeness (NIL) at more than $1 million after her TaylorMade deal.
The exact terms of Kai’s deal with TaylorMade were not disclosed. She also has another NIL endorsement, in addition to the February golf equipment deal that propelled her valuation to more than $1 million. She signed her first NIL deal with Leaf Trading Cards in January. A box of Leaf Trading Cards ranges in price from just under $30, up to more than $450, depending on the set. Each pack contains one random autograph card.
At the time of the TaylorMade deal, she ranked as the highest-valued player in girls’ high school golf.
When it comes to her valuation among women in college athletics, she ranked in the top five NIL money-makers after the TaylorMade deal. She was outranked in NIL valuation by only three women, all college athletes: LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne, LSU basketball player Flau’Jae Johnson and UConn basketball player Paige Bueckers.
The acronym stands for name, image and likeness. NIL deals protect student athletes’ rights to earn money from their publicity and sometimes includes a big-name brand endorsement, like Kai’s.
Until a historic 2021 Supreme Court decision that led to an NCAA rule change, the NCAA didn’t allow student-athletes to profit from their name, image and likeness.
If Kai had been entering collegiate sports just a few years sooner, she would not have had the opportunity to kick off her college career with this much potential for profit.
