That's why you don't take practice swings.
For the no fun crowd, yes of course currently according to Rule 12.2b, even if unintentional touching the sand during a practice swing is a 2 stroke penalty. But since he is playing a casual round and his partner doesn't mind, as always, do as you please.

Some of the golf rules are just plain dumb. You should be able to hit the sand with a practice swing with no penalty. Why is it different than taking a practice swing for any other shot on the course?

It’s never a penalty unless you whole the bunker shot in which case it’s loss of hole in match play and 2 shot penalty in stroke play.
