‘AIEA, O’ahu – Behind Dane Watanabe’s 5-under 67, the University of Hawai’i men’s golf team moved up the leaderboard into fourth place following Thursday’s final round of the Pearl at Kalauao Invitational.
The Rainbow Warriors carded a final round 7-under 281 to finish with a 4-under 880 total. West Virginia ran away with the team title at 21-under 843, 11 strokes ahead of runner-up UC San Diego (854). Individually, UCSD’s Nathan Tseng captured medalist honors at 10-under 206 while Army West Point’s Tyson Sparks was one stroke back at 9-under.
Watanabe tied for eighth place at 4-under 212 after his career-low 67. The eighth place finish was also his first career Top 10. The junior from Kāne’ohe, O’ahu posted six birdies on his round with his only blemish a bogey on No. 7.
James Whitworth shot 1-under 71 to finish 2-under 214 total and a tie for 10th place, marking his first career Top 10. Anson Cabello posted a final round even par 72 and tied for 17th place at 216. Nathan Szpakowicz carded 71 to finish 2-over 218 and a tie for 26th place.
Rounding out the UH lineup was Chris Salem, who tied for 95th at 233 after final round 76. Three Rainbow Warriors competed as individuals – Alec Hilgers (71=222, t-51st), Cameron Combado (81=235, 99th), and Quinn Murray (82=242, 104th).
The Pearl at Kalauao concludes the fall season for the Rainbow Warriors, who will open the spring season with the Amer Ari Intercollegiate, Feb. 5-7 in Waimea, Hawai’i.
