If you’re struggling to get compression with your irons, it might be because you’re losing lag too early. When the hands drop too quickly you lose that powerful, descending strike.
Focus on using your body pivot and shift to create lag — keeping your hands higher in transition, thumbs pointing up, and right elbow working into your body. This allows the club to shallow naturally and retain lag through impact for that solid, compressed feel.
Our Pure Your Irons System takes you through the sequence you need to learn in order to compress your irons.

So, you do need to keep that lag when you’re throwing the club down early like that. It’s just really difficult to compress it. The hard part is how do we do that? Because it’s one of the hardest things to get better at. What I will say, we have to understand that the body, the pivot, and the shifting is what’s going to help us with that lag. So, if we can get to the top of our back swing and we can shift and then rotate into that lead side, it’s going to be easier for us to keep that club head higher and that club shaft back and keep that lag. But here’s a feeling that you can put into this to understand how the hand should feel. So, I always like getting golfers, they do a mini back swing and they don’t really use the wrists. And then just get used to, as we said, shifting and moving towards a target, but then creating lag as you do that. So, swing back with no lag and then just kind of get this motion. And you can see when I’m doing this, as I’m shifting and engaging the body, if I can just feel my thumbs are going a little bit more upward, it’s helping me keep that lag. You’ll notice the right elbow goes a bit closer to the body. That’s great again for lag. Often times when someone loses the lag, the right arm straightens out too much. So, if you are struggling with lag and you want to get a little bit more, always remember the body is got to be the driver, but then add in that component of just getting the thumbs to go a bit more up as you go into your transition.
