[Music] Today we’re here with the Murray brothers on the range having a look at their golf game Wyoming there. Oh my god. And improving their accuracy and distance with their irons. That’s going to give you instant feedback. Add a tiny bit of a hinge. That’s it. I’m done. I think I’m go on the tour flying. I I’d never had a lesson until September last year. Okay. And I I found like it’s helped quite a lot. How often does he put you on video? Not loads, but we’ve we’ve done a little bit, particularly early on. Yeah. I think I think the video piece of it is is actually the most important piece. Yeah. any minute little change, you would see it straight away on a video and turn around and comprehend it really fast because you’re an athlete anyway and you’ll be able to make a quick change. When did you start playing? I mean, we played as as kids a bit. Yeah. I barely played really for like 20 years. Like since I was like 17 probably. Oh, really? 16 17. Did your bro play? He played a lot as a kid. He he was he was good. Yeah. when he was like 15, 16. He got down to I think about three. I mean, I would like to try and get to scratch. Yeah, if it’s possible. I’m Oh, here we go. I’ve only seen You’ve only seen your five shots. It’s It would be pretty easy, I would say. Okay. What’s your target up there? 150. Okay. Yeah, I’ll I’ll go. Go at the 150. Okay. Oh my goodness me. my aiming there. I would, if I was you, I would never not hit a ball without the alignment. Yeah, I would never. I’ve started doing that a lot more when I’m practicing cuz I generally, even when I’m putting as well, aim left and it feels straight to me. Yeah. The more you optically just hit balls, having it down there, I think you you’ll train yourself to then be when every time you’re looking up at your target, you’ll know what’s you’ll know what square is. That’s going to give you instant feedback straight away. Okay. So, how do how does that feel from an alignment perspective? Where do where do you feel there? Yeah. I mean, I feel like I’m aiming at the 200. You you decided if you were playing with him today or against him before you start taking advice from him, right? You are actually standing a fraction shut to that is why you’ll be standing shut with uh my feet. Yeah. There you go. That’s now parallel. Okay. Still a fraction shot. Wow. Okay. There you go. That’s square. direction at least swing direction and the club path goes left. Yeah. So, would you normally hit a cut? I would usually hit a cut. Yeah. A little bit of a cut. Yeah. Your face on impact. Yeah. Is 4.8° open. Yeah. It has to because you’re coming left across the ball. Yeah. So, in an ideal world, if you over time, you could work on feeling like you’re hitting more of a forehand top spin. Yeah. From in to out, that will immediately get that number closer to 0 0. Yeah. Because you’re just cutting across it. Yeah. If you want to hit a cut all the time and you had that at minus one, Yeah. still going to cut. Yes. It would be a lot easier in a strong left to right wind. Yes. if he was minus one as opposed to minus three. Yeah, of course. Yeah. So8 better straight straight off. And then of course your face is 1.7° less open. Yeah. So therefore that ball’s probably going to go seven or eight yards further. Yeah. Cuz it’s got less cut spin on it. Yeah. It’s probably back to three left on our 2.2. Face less open, but it’s still going left. I think you can have a little bit more knee flex. Yeah, that’s something I I’ve Yeah. When I’ve watched myself, I feel like literally my legs are very straight when I’m very straight. If you was to get again, I’d say fraction further away. Yeah. So, you can sit down more. Yeah. So, then you can turn into it a bit more. Yeah. It would be easier then to have that club path get to 0 0. Okay. Stand a fraction further away. Sit sit back a tiny bit. Okay. It was awesome. Okay. But it’s going to feel it’s going to feel like you’re sitting on the toilet. Strange. Yeah. I’d sit back and sit down a bit more. There you go. How did that feel? Horrendous. It just It feels It Yeah, just it does feel very different. I think it feels a bit easier for me to like control what my arms are doing, though, cuz I do I do feel when I’m swinging is that like I kind of make this move quite a lot. Now, if you’re close to the ball and you’re quite upright, that’s generally a theme. If you get a bit further away, you can actually get a bit more rounded, if that makes sense. You’re still aiming too far right. Still too far right. Don’t move. Don’t move. What you aiming at? Well, I don’t know right now. I thought I was supposed to be aiming at the 150, but uh yeah, it’s okay. It’s okay. Passable. It’s okay. [Applause] That felt like my strike flush. Look at the difference. It looks much better. Yeah. I mean, it’s it’s it’s miles better. Yeah. Your your natural swing is should be a cut. Yeah. The way you swing it, that right there is a really nice manageable cut. Yeah. Cuz it’s still going to cut 5 yards. Yeah. So, if you could aim five yards left of every pin and swing it like that. Yeah. 9 9 f’ 6 in. Yeah. That’s inside to proximity. Yeah. To the pin with with wedge. Yeah. That’s it. I’m done. I think I’m sorted. Absolutely flying. Jamie, do you do you want to hit some in there? Um, I’m concerned. I’m concerned. Yeah. Don’t mess my golf game up. Oh, big toe. Where are we aiming? Uh, I’m aiming Sorry, it’s unprofessional, isn’t it? I’m aiming at the 150 marker. Okay. Okay. Alignment’s good. Yeah. Yeah. Really good. Shot was good. Yeah. Take that. Would you not? Would you? I mean, that’s a tiny draw. If you hit a good one, actually, we’d have a little bit a little bit of a draw. A little bit. Yeah. I’m going to video one and then and then show you. All right. Okay. I’m going to hit at this mound then. Okay. Okay. I’ll tell you which mound. The one the one in between. Sorry. To the right of the 150. The first one to the right 150. Okay. Setup’s great. Okay. Alignment’s good. You could possibly square the shoulders a fraction more. What I mean by saying correct. So, as you make that turn, Yeah. You’ve dragged the club back to there with no with no hinge. Okay. Yeah. So, the hinge comes in quite late when it gets towards the top. The elbows aren’t I mean I I have a flying right elbow anyway. But on the way down, it does sort of start on the inside, which is nice. That’s actually a really nice move. Okay. Now, if I move you from this position Yeah. to this position, it’s going to feel very weird. Yeah. Horrific. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Try a couple and see what happens. Okay. Cuz I think I think you would get it fractionally less. So it was less inside. Less it was less inside. It was less inside which is good. Okay. like my for my irons, my ball position is like too far forward because often like I’ll hit like decent like straight shots, but I always feel like it’s kind of like I’m hitting like a thin shot, but it’s, you know, it’s down the bottom of the I just wondered if it’s What club is that? That’s an eight iron, I think. Yeah, actually. Ball position is fine. Yeah. Yeah, it’s good. Okay. What did that feel like on the way back? I mean, I just tried to focus really hard to like get the feel like I’m getting the club head like here on the way back and then what happened happened after that. Okay. I mean, listen, dead straight at your target and it was much less. I thought you going to say my level it if we can get rid of that. Yeah. To get to here. Like I honestly do think you’ll start to put it in a really really nice position. Okay. So, do that again. And then as you get to here, just start to add a tiny bit of a hinge. Okay. Yeah. Because that’s nice because you don’t use any hinge until you’re up here. Yeah. Okay. Then you hinge it and then you hit it. So I think you could load some energy into the wrist just a bit earlier. Okay. All right. So feel like that club’s coming straight back to the ball towards that ball. All right. Wasn’t where I was aiming, I don’t think, but it’s a good shot. Hit a couple on the track, man. Hit a couple from that position there. It may well start to go a bit left. That one went left. Yeah, it it may. So, just And then you’ve come in. Yeah. Because you’re used to coming this way. Yeah. And then into the ball. Uh-huh. If I now get you here and you turn on top, it might it might be aiming. Okay. So, there you go. Right. Club path into the ball. You know where I said on the way down you’re in a really nice position. You are. Okay. That’s awesome. Okay. So, that’s your club path is tracking 2 of a degree. Okay. Perfect. Right. Okay. Okay. From in to out. Okay. So, it’s perfect. But the reason why that ball went left is because the face to the path was 2.2 degrees to the left. Okay. Yeah. So, you’ve just basically closed the face very slightly. Okay. See if you can repeat that club path. Okay. But with the face being less closed. Okay. How did How did that feel? I mean, felt weird, but it was a good I mean it was right over the 150. Okay. What did the face? The path was minus 3.8. Face the path was 4.4. Okay. You’ve come over the top of that one. Okay. And you you you knew you were subconsciously. Yeah. Because you’ve open the face 4°. Yeah. Okay. You’ll know where you’re at position wise and you’ll just go, “Oh, I’m a save it a bit.” Yeah. You save it. Scotty Sheffller. It’s all I ever It’s all I ever hear about him. How was that one? That was slightly left. It would be probably better. Look, look how good that is, though. Point4 of a degree. Nothing. Yeah. Okay. Zero. I mean, zero. Club face zero. 2. Okay. So, those two zeros right there are so neutral, right? That that ball’s going to So, not much can go wrong if those if those are okay. 14 ft left of target just because just because that one said 2 left. Okay. Okay. It’s gone 14 ft which you’d take 14 all day long. Yeah. Easily three part that from there. Okay. I’m going to do my own swing and I see the see what he does. Oh my god. How to ruin the Murray brothers in literally 15 minutes. Disaster. Right to get off the range now.

  1. If someone is good at one ball game they often find that they can perform at another ball game. Great tips Ian

  2. Can I have a lesson next? I am sure I could benefit a lot more than these elite athletes. Happy to pay your ryanair flight from London to Glasgow 🙂 Or wait until JCB

  3. Nice one. Problem with the fix for Jamie is that you aren’t gonna see results straight away. It’s gonna feel awful until you can adjust the way you move your body, in particular sequencing, which is a slow process.

Had this same change myself. Got my backswing looking brilliant, but ripped open from the top and ruined my ball striking. Only when I started getting my pelvis forward (toward target) earlier and weight into left side earlier, that I felt I could swing a club from the ‘proper’ position

  4. Would love to see a charity auction where the prize is a lesson off you. That would be unreal.

  5. @ipthepostman
    Great vids recently Poults,

Be good to see your preparation for a competition week and how you prepare physically & mentally.

  6. It’s a refreshing change to have a tour pro dishing out advice, opposed to some random bloke in his garden. Really good stuff

  7. Hell I just want a lesson I’ve never had a lesson I’m self taught. I’m a 7 -9 handicap I’m 70 yrs old still hit it 280

  8. That last shot by Jamie is literally me after introducing the latest YT inspired change into my swing.

  9. Poults is the only Youtube golfer who isn't a loathesome narcissist, and unlike the others, can actually play golf.

  10. That “sitting on a toilet seat” feel is something that doesn’t get talked about enough I think.

  11. Really enjoyed this very informative. Like to see video on how to cut down backswing…..been trying for over 50 years without success. Cheers!
