Saquon Barkley opened Thursday night football with an 18-yd run, his longest of the season, followed by a 13-yd gain. But over the course of the game, Barkley struggled, finishing with just 58 rushing yards and failing to surpass 100 for the sixth straight game. The Philadelphia Eagles were thoroughly outplayed by the New York Giants, losing 34 to 17. And it was clear they were out coached in all three phases. The Eagles offense has shown signs of struggle, particularly in the running game. The once reliable tush push required four attempts to gain three yards for a touchdown against New York. Injuries are piling up on defense as well, including the absence of defensive lineman Jaylen Carter and the early exit of quarterback Quinn Yan Mitchell. The pass rush struggled to contain Giants rookie quarterback Jackson Dart, allowing him to move freely and keeping the Eagles off balance. Philadelphia’s offense showed flashes early, scoring on three of their first four drives, but the momentum evaporated. A poorly managed final possession of the first half ended with Jaylen Herz unable to run a fourth down play before time expired. The second half was disastrous. Punt, punt, punt, interception, fumble, yielding just seven first downs across five possessions. Even with uptempo plays generating some early success, efficiency remains a major issue. Barkley and Herz acknowledged predictability as a problem. Defenders now anticipate the Eagles run and pass plays, limiting big gains. Herz completed 24 of 33 passes for a touchdown and an interception, while AJ Brown caught six of nine targets for 80 yards, showing he remains a reliable weapon. Barkley, meanwhile, has only 178 yards over his past four games, far below last season’s explosive production against the Giants. Coach Nicks Sirriani admitted the team did not execute its brand of football Thursday, while players like Lane Johnson emphasized the need for in-game adjustments and less predictability. The Eagles will use the extra rest before their week seven matchup with the Vikings as a mini buy to diagnose these problems and regain their championship form. Despite recent struggles, Philadelphia remains tied for first in the NFC East. Though the past five quarters have exposed troubling vulnerabilities that must be addressed.
