Rory Mroy has opted out of this week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, sparking a wave of reactions across the PGA Tour. Despite his absence, the Masters Champion’s number two ranking in the FedEx Cup standings secures a spot at the Tour Championship at East Lake later this season. Even if he misses both this event and the upcoming BMW Championship in Maryland. While Mroyy’s decision doesn’t threaten his FedEx Cup title chances, it has certainly raised eyebrows. Jordan Speaf, a three-time major winner, address the issue on Tuesday. You might have one or two guys do that for an event, but I don’t think it will become a thing because there are still huge events against the best players in the world. I think they’re trying to figure out how to make sure you don’t skip both of them. and ideally neither of them. Peter Malnati, a PGA Tour policy board player director, expressed concern, suggesting that measures are in the works to prevent similar skips in the future. I think there is stuff in the works to keep it from happening again. And I’ll leave it at that. Rich Beam, former PGA Tour player and Sky Sports analyst, speculated that brutal weather conditions may have factored into Mroyy’s choice. Memphis is typically very hot. It gets into the ‘9s and you’re drinking like 20 bottles of water. It can be that stifling. It can really sap your energy. You play four rounds there, then head to a long course at Caves Valley, followed by the same heat in Atlanta. Mroyy’s history at TPC Southwind may also have influenced his decision. Last year in Memphis, he opened with a 68, but faded badly, finishing near the bottom of the leaderboard. Despite that poor performance, he only slipped from third to fifth in the FedEx Cup rankings. Back in November, Mroy hinted at his plan in an interview with the Telegraph. I’ll probably not play the first playoff event in Memphis. I mean, I finished basically dead last there and only moved down one spot in the playoff standings. The FedEx St. Jude Championship is the opening leg of the three-part FedEx Cup playoffs held at TPC Southwind from August 6th to 10th. The event has been a PGA tour staple in Memphis since 1958, moving from Colonial Country Club to its current venue in 1989.
