No one, and I mean no one, saw this coming. We are now eight days into the NBA season and we have had three arrests. Okay. Uh now, this most recent one was not performed by the FBI, okay? It has nothing to do with all that jazz, but it does impact your Dallas Mavericks, and I’m going to talk about it a little bit today and see how that might impact uh our our roster here coming up. But we do have a game tonight against the Indiana Pacers at 6:30 PM Central time. So, we’ll talk talk through a couple of injury updates as well as maybe even what to expect on the court tonight against the Pacers. And to wrap up our episode, I’m not cooking up anything new today as far as trades are concerned, but I’m going to revisit a trade that was made last season and why I’m still really annoyed about it. Uh, stick around. You’re going to want to make sure you stick around for that. But now that the suspense is killing you and you’re like, “Hey, can we just dive in?” Yeah, we can do that. But first, here’s a quick introduction. My name is Ethan the Advisor. Clayton, welcome to the party, fam. And by party, I mean dope podcast. This is your Mavs, the Dallas Mavericks podcast, where all are welcome. Y’all better behave. Now, uh, once again, we have a lot to talk about. Let’s do this. Uh let’s start off with the injury updates. Again, we do have a game uh game four, five, where’s my math? Game five tonight against the Pacers. Uh 6:30 p.m. And uh we’re going to start with a couple injury updates here. I did mention in yesterday’s episode that Cooper Flag is dealing with shoulder soreness and it was reported today that all is well. He is fine. He will be playing tonight. So, whatever concern you had about his shoulder, we can uh stash that away for now. I hopefully it’s not something we see be aggravated or anything like that. But I’m Yeah, I’m encouraged. Uh don’t definitely don’t want to see your I guess future franchise cornerstone go down with an injury four games into the season. Okay. So, yeah, uh maybe bullet dodged there. Uh however, on the other end of the spectrum, we do still have u a lot of doubts as to whether or not Daniel Gaffford is going to make his season debut. And it looks like the lingering knee confusion that Derrick Lively is dealing with is going to continue making him unavailable tonight. And u also uh maybe slight red flag here. It it was reported that Anthony Davis is probable for tonight’s game, but he is dealing with bilateral Achilles tendonopathy. That’s a lot of words just to say both of his Achilles are inflamed right now. U you know, I I I looked into it. It’s it’s not too bad, but it’s it’s an injury or I guess it’s symptomatic for uh aging basketball players that are, you know, have been doing a lot of jumping in their careers. And it doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s a there’s a risk for greater injury, but it’s it’s just something to monitor. And obviously, it’s uncomfortable to walk around and and play basketball with inflamed Achilles. So, yeah, we want to keep an eye on it. He is probable tonight and I I really hope he plays because again uh both Gaffford and Lively are doubtful for tonight’s game. So yeah, uh I guess we’re going to see some uh Dwight Powell minutes. I mean, I guess we didn’t really the other day, but it stands to reason that if AD has inflamed Achilles and Gaffford and Lively aren’t playing, uh maybe we should see a few Dwight Pal minutes as well as Musa Cece. Uh yeah, we’ll see what happens there. Let’s talk a little bit about what I teased at the beginning of this episode. Again, we did have another arrest over the weekend and this time it impacts your Dallas Mavericks. It it in fact it impacted Brandon Williams, Dallas Maverick’s guard. Now, I am not going to make a mountain out of a molehill here, right? And I I I don’t want to shame Brandon Williams over this, but he was arrested at the Dallas airport with under two ounces of weed. And you know, as you know, in the state of Texas, that is illegal. Um, however, something something I, you know, I discovered is that with in in today’s CBA, the collective bargaining agreement, marijuana is no longer listed as a banned substance, and it’s not even something that they test for. So, it is something that the NBA views less severely than they have in the past. However, there is still state law to contend with and you know uh very easily the the league could instate the uh uh conduct detrimental definition to this. Okay. So, what that could mean is either he sees a fine or he sees a uh a minor suspension of one to five games. The last time that a player was suspended for marijuana possession was in 2017 and that was Monte Ellis and it was when the uh the CBA did list marijuana as a banned substance that we test for. So, um, maybe with that being redefined in the CBA, maybe Brandon Williams doesn’t get the full extent of of the NBA law thrown at him. But I will say it is highly highly unlikely that there is any jail time or anything of that nature. Uh, maybe even just a small fine or suspension. I don’t think it’s going to impact us a whole lot. And really, you know, from what I from what’s been reported by I believe it was Ron Har Jr. over at DLLS Sports. He was traveling and and he was listed out in the last game for personal reasons and that was true. He was traveling to a funeral for a high school friend of his. So, we definitely want to send our our thoughts and prayers to Brandon and all of those involved with that tragedy. But, yeah, uh sound sound like he was, you know, he had kind of let his guard down. He was coming back and brought marijuana with him. Uh, again, I’m not going to shame just why would you have that at the airport? That’s my only question here. Um, yeah, but yeah, let’s uh let’s let’s monitor that a little bit. I think probably at the most it’s a, you know, three or four game suspension. Uh, not a huge impact to us right now. Brandon Williams has hardly cracked any rotational minutes so far. And whenever he did, he wasn’t playing super well. Maybe he’s still kind of ramping back up from his uh I believe it was a hamstring injury that happened in training camp. Anyway, uh but yeah, that’s that’s all I got for you on that. Now, um as I said at the beginning of the episode, we’re not we’re not cooking up anything new as far as trade ideas are today. But I do want to revisit a trade made last season. And no, we are not talking about the Luca trade today. We’re not doing it. Okay. What we are going to do is I I’ve kind of been keeping my eye on Quinton Grimes for the Philadelphia 76ers. Now, uh brief rewind to the off season. There was that contract stalemate that happened over the entire summer where, you know, uh Quinton Grimes camp thought that he was worth about 20 25 million a year and Philadelphia’s like, “Hey, we ain’t doing that. Okay, it’s not happening.” So, at the when it was all said and done, Quinton Grimes did sign the qualifying offer. I was believe I believe it’s about $8 million contract for this season, and now he has the player option for next season where he can become a uh an unrestricted free agent. So, that’s just a little sidebar, but yeah, we we traded Quinton Grimes at the at the deadline last season for Caleb Martin. And yeah, that was all we gave that was all we got and we gave up a second round pick in addition to uh Quinton Grimes. Now, on the one hand, maybe maybe we avoided an awkward summer with Quinton Grimes. That back and forth, hey, I think I’m worth this. You’re only willing to pay me that. Like, good luck with that, right? I mean, I I I I’m glad that we didn’t have to deal with that kind of drama. Maybe it wouldn’t have happened. Uh maybe it’s just specific to the situation over in Philly. I don’t know. But what I am seeing and what I’m frustrated about is that this season, Quinton Grimes, even in without him being in the starting lineup for the Sixers, is averaging 17 and a half points. Uh let me let me double check this because I I it seems fake. He’s shooting 43% from the field. Yeah, like that’s that’s decent, but y’all, he’s shooting 48% from three-point line. Okay, that seems fake. Homie is going off right now. In fact, uh even though he’s not starting games for for Philly, he is definitely finishing them. And there and it’s happened more than once this season, and by the way, the Sixers are undefeated. It’s happened more than once this season where the games were really tight in the fourth quarter and Quinton Grimes hits a clutch three-pointer to either tie the game or retake the lead. And it happened again last night again. Homie is just cooking this season. And man, it’s frustrating to look back on that trade. I’m You’ve heard me say make comments about Caleb Martin. I think he is our best defender. uh he was unserviceable on the offensive side last season and maybe maybe we’re seeing a little bit uh a little bit better from him this season, but very limited minutes. It doesn’t seem like we can trust him to have the type of minutes that Grimes is getting over in Philly, which you know, he’s averaging, let’s see, right around 30 minutes a game. Okay, so I don’t think that trade has worked out for us super well. Uh, I’m not telling you anything that you don’t already know there, but I did want to point out that Grimes is shooting 48% from the three-point line. Like, I’m just going to keep saying that over and over because that is just bonkers. And that is exactly what we need on our roster. Uh, I don’t presume we’re going to reenter negotiations with uh with the Sixers anytime soon and be like, “Hey, uh, so can we can we have our guy back?” I I I don’t think that’s happening. And even now, like with the way Grimes is playing, he is continuing to boost his value and maybe bolster a market for himself that, you know, will have a lot more movement in this upcoming summer. Um, but yeah, we’ll see. But on the, you know, on the flip side, Caleb Martin, uh, I I need you to step it a little bit, uh, step it up a little bit on the offensive side of the ball. Maybe like chuck up a couple shots tonight. um our our rotation is going to be a little bit lighter with all the injuries that we’re already dealing with. So maybe there’s uh maybe there’s runway for him to get, you know, 10 12 minutes tonight and and you know, get some buckets. He’s not known to be a bucket getter, but I I I think just to make myself feel a little bit better, I’m I’m going to put that out there that maybe maybe we’re due for a Caleb Martin breakout. Okay. Uh but that’s all I got for you today. Uh y’all y’all party on and of as as always be
