Kapalua Plantation Course Update Sentry Tournament Canceled & Course Recovery। USA NEWS TODAY

The plantation course at Capalua looks pristine from a distance, its wide fairways framed by pines and backed by the Pacific. Up close, however, the turf tells a different story. General manager Alex Nakajima knows every inch of the course, and he sees the stress caused by water shortages that forced its closure to resort play in September and ultimately led to the cancellation of the PGA Tours Sentry season opener. The course is recovering, but it’s not where we would like it to be. Nakajima said co, wildfires, and now water issues have created unprecedented challenges for Capalua. The resort itself remains open, and staff have used the downtime to refresh the clubhouse, renovate the restaurant, and repave cart paths, all while maintaining employment for employees affected by the wildfires. The century’s absence leaves a noticeable gap both economically and socially. The tournament has been a Maui tradition since 1999, generating $50 million annually for the island and nearly $10 million for local charities. To help offset the loss, Capalua pledged a $750,000 donation to the community, reflecting Nakajima’s belief that success isn’t just about profit, but also about being part of the local fabric. Preparing a course for resort play differs greatly from hosting elite competition. Two shaded greens, the first and eighth, will remain closed when play resumes on November 10th, with rounds offered at a discount for the rest of the year. The resort is already seeing strong bookings, showing the enduring appeal of Capalua, even without the tournament. Long-term questions remain about the PGA Tour schedule and the future of the Sentry despite Sentry’s commitment through 2035. For now, Nakajima and his team focus on what they can control, restoring the plantation course to full health. By year’s end, all 18 holes should be playable. We will continue to focus on improving Capalua. Nakajima said, “We are living the dream.” Despite setbacks, the course, the staff, and the community remain resilient, turning a challenging year into a story of perseverance and dedication to the game and the island.
