EXCLUSIVE: Jay Bothroyd would love to take to the golf course with three footballing legends.
During his professional career, the former striker dazzled fans across the globe, scoring tremendous goals in both the Premier League and Serie A, before mesmerising crowds in both Thailand and Japan.
But with his time on the football pitch now in the rearview mirror, the 43-year-old is focusing on his new passion — golf.
Jay Bothroyd names the football stars he’d love to play Four-Ball golf with
Jay Bothroyd has joined forces with England Golf to become a Game Changer, a role in which he’ll inspire the next generation to give the sport a try.
Since retiring from ‘the beautiful game’, the former England international has spent a great deal of time on the course, with the natural-born goal scorer opening up about the three footballers he’d love to play four-ball with.
In an exclusive interview with Sporf, he explained: “My friend Andy Cole. I play with him quite a lot; he’s a Manchester United legend. He would definitely be in my four-ball. You definitely want characters with a lot of personality so there’s banter going on. Jimmy Bullard, another friend of mine—he is always fun—but to be fair, it’s a bit difficult to play with him because he makes you laugh all the way round. Then, I’d go with a hero of mine, Roy Keane. I love his dry sense of humour. He’s very focused, very competitive. I’d like to see what he’d be like on the golf course. I don’t actually know if he plays golf or not, but definitely him.”

Jay Bothroyd is thrilled to be a Game Changer
Bothroyd has joined Game Changers, which is part of England Golf’s wider strategic vision for 2025-2030, with the organisation keen to bring together influential individuals who have a passion for showcasing the sport as safe, inclusive, sustainable, and inspirational.
The ex-Cardiff City star explained: “I’m absolutely honoured to be a Game Changer. I want to give back to the community and help the younger generation see how enjoyable golf can be. I grew up in North London, where I didn’t even know that golf existed until Tiger Woods came about. To be a part of this venture with England Golf is amazing.
“The most important thing is that I want to give the younger generation an opportunity to get a golf club in their hands and give the game a try. Golf is a middle-class sport, but we want to try and help give these young people an opportunity to try it and hopefully get them involved in the sport. Golf is evolving with social media posts from footballers and musicians, and becoming more inclusive.”
