From breakthrough to belief – Ben Campbell’s story is one of resilience, growth, and rise.

Ben snatched a surprise victory from John Catlin right at the very end to win the International Series Morocco in July 2024, after a sensational finish at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam. He holed a 20-foot birdie putt on the par-five 18th to win on the first hole of a sudden-death play-off, having been three behind Catlin with two holes to play. He caught Catlin with an eagle, birdie finish.

It was his second success on the Asian Tour having won the Hong Kong Open at the end of 2023 after a similarly last-gasp finish when he nailed a 15-foot birdie on the last. He finished the year second on The Asian Tour Merit list. The victories were just reward for a player who has struggled with injuries and missed six months of 2022 following back surgery.

The New Zealander stepped into 2025 joining the LIV Golf League after being selected by Bubba Watson to be part of his RangeGoats GC alongside Peter Uihlein and Matthew Wolff.

[Music] golf. It’s definitely a tough game to master. It’s, you know, the courses change all the time. The this grass surface changes. But, you know, I think for me, I really like the challenge of it. You know, one day you can go out, you could shoot the course record and the next day, you know, you’re struggling to break 70. He’s he’s got a never say die attitude. He digs deep when he when he needs to. you know, if things aren’t going so great for a start, then he’ll dig deep and he’ll, you know, he’ll come rock. Trying to find that consistency and, you know, a good score is always out there. And I think you can you can have your game feeling like amazing one day and then you wake up and and you just for whatever reason you can’t find it. So, I think uh it’s a very addictive sort of game like that, especially when you’re a competitive person. There’s a whole entourage following you over here. How are you, bro? Jeez. Proud of you, man. It’s been awesome stuff. I’ve really enjoyed my time playing on the Asian Tour. When I first turned pro, I signed with IMG and they used to run a lot of the events out here. So, it’s sort of been since that 2012 sort of 13. So, over 10 years now. I’ve sort of been out here off and on and um you know I think traveling around the different countries playing different styles of courses each week’s so different from the style of course to the grass you play on you know grainy greens to playing on bent greens and then and I think just you know learning to travel you know coming out here at a young age learning to travel around going to different countries is really good you know you’ll learn a lot no doubt in the mind it has and sometimes you thrown in the deep end. But it’s uh you know, I’ve I’ve really enjoyed my time out here. Obviously, I’ve had sort of a lot of injuries and and that over the years and um you know, there’s been times when I thought I’d never play golf again and um sort of had a big hip operation just before co when your game is not going well, golf can be lonely and frustrating because you can have coaches, you can have people helping you, but you’re the one who’s really got to turn it around. So, I think sometimes when you when you golf’s not feeling where it should be, that can be pretty frustrating. But, you know, all in all, you know, I feel like it’s a it’s a great life to live. I think Hong Kong was that that definitely helped me. It gave me some confidence. You know, pretty close is the answer. you know, obviously, you know, going down the line with Cam Smith like that and then, you know, holding a putt when you needed to. You know, I wouldn’t have still been out here if I didn’t feel like I could win. So, [Applause] it was just a good sort of confidence booster and and just sort of gave me that next step to to trust my game and and keep continuing. [Music] Thank you very much. Okay. Thank you. Obviously, uh, having the win in Hong Kong and obviously winning here last year. Um, but yeah, I’ve had lots of lots of good moments with Ben. You don’t have to the first nine holes on a on a Sunday guard and shoot five under, you know, and you know, I was lucky enough here in Morocco. I stayed just within, you know, touching distance and certainly was unbelievable performance by Van Campbell. And this is the butt which wins the playoff. Yeah. No, it was a great finish. I, you know, I didn’t have my best out there today. And I just kept saying to Mike, I’ve just got to find something and just stay patient. And um went flag hunting on 16 and leaked it right and hit a great bunker shot there. And I said to Mike, if I can finish birdie eagle, you never know. So he’s really hardworking. He’s a really dedicated player. He spends a lot of time out on the range and he just stays really patient out there. Over the years out on the Asian tour, I’ve traveled with some some great people. You know, I ruined with Jake Higinbottom for years and then for the last few years with with Andrew Dot. That was what made the Asian tour so special when I first came out here was, you know, there’s Karen Pratt, Groomie, like every night you could go to dinner with like your friend sort of thing, which, you know, when you first turn pro was a nice experience to have. from New Zealand, Ben Comeell. When you’re young, when you’re sort of 18, 19, you know, you I think sometimes you’re missing sort of events or and your friends are always having, you know, going out having a heap of fun and things like that. I think sometimes that was a little bit tricky. Um, but I think, you know, there is sacrifices, but we do, you know, we we’re very lucky. We get to travel the world playing a sport and so yeah I think sometimes there are sacrifices but we do get a lot of benefits as well. ultimate goal on Gulp. I think for me, you know, I’ I’d love to spend a couple more years out on live u for me the start of this year finishing top 24 um on the order of merit, but live was was definitely a goal of mine. I I I I won’t play golf forever. I don’t see myself sort of playing probably much past I’m 40 and things like that. To win a few more times out here in Asia would be great and definitely win on live.
