What’s up everybody? Welcome back into the play the fights on college football show. The Nebraska side of things. Of course, Nebraska takes down Northwestern 28-21 to get bowl eligible in October, which feels great. But the task ahead is tall as USC comes into Memorial Stadium this weekend to take on the 6 and2 Scurs. And they’re a four-point underdog. Four and a half point underdog. I’ve seen it as much as up to six or seven. It’s okay to be a home dog. It’s okay to be an underdog in this situation. Honestly, it’s probably where I see it, too. A little bit of a spoiler, but we’ll see. We’ll break down USC tonight. If you’ve never been a part of the show, make sure you hit the subscribe button, hit the like button. It’s Memorial Stadium is going to be rocking night game in November. That’s newer to the Big 10. If you remember the days where you couldn’t play those games, it’s going to be a cold one. I saw was like low 40s at kickoff, 30 degrees, maybe even it reaches into the 30s, I should say. But it’s going to be a hell of an atmosphere to bring in a California-based team into a tough environment. And Nebraska is going to be ready for it, but they have a tall task ahead. Like I said, before we get into that preview, let’s recap the Northwestern game incredibly briefly. This recap is presented by our great partner over at Full Ride Vintage Gear, fullvintagegeear.com. My score prediction was 24 to 20. Nebraska ends up winning the game 28-21. Not too far off. That’s kind of where I saw it. They’re just a kind of that gritty football team similar to what Minnesota was. Nebraska just didn’t play like complete ass against Northwestern. They had their moments though. That middle swing of the game where Nebraska really took advantage of a nice pick tip ball interception. Then a great catch by Naiah Hunter on the sideline gets to 21 to6. If you watch the preview or you knew about Northwestern prior to watching the video, you kind of knew that they were going to hang around. That’s just who they are as a program. and David Braun kind of leads him to that way and that’s how they’re successful and sticking around and then stealing those games at the end. But at the end of the day, Dylan put a drive together. EMTT finishes it off. We ran the ball effectively pretty much the entire game. Really good game out of EMTT. He got it 27 carries. One of my keys to the game was to give him the ball. We did so. Things went right. Not to say I’m always right on this show, but it felt good to to get one here late in week nine. But bull eligible October a lot different than what’s been going on in recent history in Nebraska football. So take what we can get in some sort of way. Correct. I hope you agree with me. Is the linebacker core? Our linebacker core is obviously pretty young. Still a lot of inexperience on that linebacking side of things, but they struggled and they’ve got a tall task ahead this week and a lot of responsibilities within this USC offensive scheme. So, they got to take a big step forward or it will kill us again this weekend. But, a couple of lack of days weeks for the linebacking core. But I thought the defense was halfway decent overall this weekend compared to what Northwestern’s done to teams on the ground pretty consistently throughout the year. So kind of a negative positive there to end that one up. But 28-21 big win for Nebraska. Really close to the score prediction. We’ll see if the USC preview can lead us in the same direction. Like the school being involved, changing the social media handles, images, profile pictures, banner images. It’s cool. I’m excited for it. I know there’s some people out there that maybe say this is a blueb blood matchup should be one great helmet next to the next and whatever. The way the last decade’s gone, it’s all right to do something different and fun. We wore our regular helmets last year against them and so did they. Didn’t go too well. So, they want to do Blackout, make the atmosphere a little bit one step better. Sounds good to me. Northern Western’s a hell of a team, man. 23rd in the country right now. 5-2 overall. lost in their last matchup two weeks ago at Notre Dame 34-24 in a game where they really got run all over and then a few weeks before that they lost on the road at Illinois on a game-winning field goal. They really had that game in hand and gave it away. They were competitive again and majority of both of those games their key win I would give them against Michigan at home. They handled Michigan 3113. It was really 24-13 besides a garbage time touchdown. But USC is a very talented team which is not breaking any barriers of news here if you pay attention to college football as a whole. They’re coming off a buy once again to face Nebraska. They did the same thing last year. Back-to-back years. USC gets Nebraska off a buy. Lincoln Riley gets two weeks to prepare for the Huskers. It was still a close game last year. We’ll see if Nebraska can take the edge in 2025. All time. Looking at the series, Nebraska is 0 and5 against the Trojans. 05 and one if you really want to count the kissing your sister tie way back in like early 1900s but the five losses came in 1969 2006 2007 2007 being that gloriously horrible college game day game with Bill Callahan at the helm 2014 in the Holiday Bowl with another interimm coach in the mix there and then 2024 last year the one-sore loss on the road in the Coliseum and Jade Mava’s first start for USC So, we will see if Nebraska can turn the tide and get their first win this weekend over the Trojans of Southern Cal. Leading that team, Lincoln Riley. Everybody kind of knows this name by now, right? Been across the map, been across a big coaching carousel, made his moves, makes a good chunk of money out there in Southern Cal, three Heisman Trophy winners to his name, four Big 12 championships, three college football playoff appearances. He was the 2018 Big 12 coach of the year and he has three players from his school selected number one in overall in the NFL draft. He is the only coach to have that most all time in the common draft era is that three players selected number one overall. So very accomplished coach, finds talent, develops really well, especially in the quarterback room. We all know the quarterbacks he’s rolled through and it doesn’t look like statistically and what we’ve seen on the field that Jade May is going to be very far off that Heisman Trophy may be pushing it, but still a very talented player nonetheless. Lincoln Riley, hell of a coach. Got some history with Matt Rule. Ran into him back in his time at Temple and of course in the Big 12 with Baylor and Oklahoma. So, they will meet once again. Let’s move into their offense. Starting at their quarterback, let’s let’s take a step back. Let’s look at them overall first. It’s the fifth ranked offense in college football, people. 42 points per game. They score a ton. Stunning news for a Lincoln Riley team. Not their number one offense in college football when it comes to yards per game. They put up 530 yards per game through week nine of the season. That is damn impressive. They are 90% conversion rate in the red zone. They’re getting some sort of points. Their kicker is excellent. 12 for 13 on the year. Made one from 54 just a few weeks back. really really good special teams and offensive unit within the red zone. So, we got to keep them out of that if we’re going to play Ben don’t break style. Got to keep him outside of the 40 to really accomplish that and keep them off the board as much as we want to. It’s a 50/50 offense overall, run verse pass might be shocking news to some with the Lincoln Riley offense. I think the automatic thought around college football or at least fans in general of football is it’s a pass first offense. When usually when you see numbers like that, you think they’re slinging the ball around the yard. It’s kind of 50/50 with their play calling. They’re just that talented. They’ve got explosive athletes on the offensive side of the ball. There’s going to be a lot of motion. It’s almost a Scott Frostesque motion style where they’re going to get some sort of slot receiver or wide receiver moving in the back field to set up a dump off opportunity. But there’s a lot of pre- snap reads they give their quarterback to really let them know what’s going on on the defensive side of the ball and make things easy on them. It’s what this offense really does well in my opinion and why they’re so successful and so consistent throughout a season is because their pre-nap reads and their schemes itself set people up for success. Let’s get into the players. The quarterback Jaden Mava on the screen. 6’4 230 lb junior. Made his first start against USC. I’m sorry, first start for USC against Nebraska last year. Second matchup Nebraska will face this quarterback in USC uniform. Big calm presence in the pocket. He’s thrown for over 2100 yards this year. 15 touchdowns, four picks. It’s a great split. And he’s only been sacked five times. You may say, “Yeah, why why you why would a sack be on a stat sheet that you should know?” Well, Dylan Riola got sacked nine times in a game. It’s week 10 in college football and he’s been sacked five times all year. So, he can move a little bit back there. He’s good at manipulating the pocket, good at getting the ball out when he needs to. And he limits the turnovers. Those turnover numbers are pretty minimal compared to the grand scheme of college football and what some numbers are out there. And USC’s been pretty good in the turnover margin all year long. They’re about even. I think they’re just plus one maybe if you want to give him that. Mave is good. He will make his mistakes. If he does try and extend those plays too often, if he rolls out and forces something, that’s when he does make those mistakes. But he’s a big body, so when they get inside the goal line, you’ll see him on a quarterback design run. He scored on one last year against Nebraska. They’ve got to look out for things like that. I wouldn’t put him in the running category of Bryce Underwood or Brendan Sorsby, obviously, but he has the ability to do so. You’re not just going to have it schemed as much as you would for those other two guys I mentioned. Very good option, very good quarterback. really knows this scheme and offense well. He’s been in it for a while now. At the running back position, this position matters. It’s like I told you, it’s a 50-50 split. But at running back there, Wayman Jordan, who’s USC starting running back at the beginning of the year at least, he’s out due to an ankle injury. He sustained against Michigan. He’s out four to six weeks, so he’s expected to miss this game against Nebraska. And then his backup, Eli Sanders, blew out his knee against Michigan. So, he’s also out. So, they’re down to their third string running back by depth chart, if you will. But King Miller is a hell of an option and a hell of a running back. 380 yards on the year, 47 carries, breaks down to 8.1 yards per carry. 6′ 210 lb true freshman out of Calabasas, California. And if that PTSD monitor, which we always talk about on this show, went off when I said Calabasas, I get it. We’re the same style of person. That’s the Tristan Gabia, Brendan Riley Hiles recruiting era in the Mike Riley uh Calabasa if you will. He reigns out of Calabasa. It’s just a fun little tie in there with some old dark days of Nebraska football. Really good running back here though. King Miller, big big 10 back, Big 10 ceiling in my mind. Really high ceiling, physical runner, really good at jump cutting. I wouldn’t put him to the same category as maybe EMTT Johnson when it comes to jump cutting, but really good at it in open space. If he has to beat one safety to make a long run, he’s really good at doing so. They like to get him going with those slow reads, those slow meshes, you’ll see a lot of outside zone within this offense where they get somebody going off at tackle and they can cut back and find something up the middle. They’ve done that really well. So, backer discipline very important for the Black Shirts this week. And then behind him, they’ll have Brian Jackson, who’s a sophomore. He’ll get a handful of carries, but he’s definitely their B option. Good running game. Starts with King Miller. He’s been good for him since he’s really taken over the starting role and got I believe he was Big 10 co-offensive player of the week just a couple weeks ago. On the outside, we got to spend some time here because it’s two of the better names in college football. One of those being Mai Lemon. 758 yards, 48 receptions, breaks down to a 15.8 average. And this wide receiver unit is good because you look at it 330 yards per game throwing the ball. 10 yards per catch across the board as a unit. It’s they’ve been productive, they’ve been consistent, and they have a plethora of options, but it starts with Lemon. He’s the most targeted by far because he’s really good at contested catches, really good down the field and adds a lot of yak at the end of the day. So, kind of the best of both worlds or every world you could imagine when it comes to wide receivers. Fits that narrative of Mai Lemon. Couple more options on the outside for him. Jacobe Lane, one of the better receivers in college football as well. A real dual-headed monster. I could have put him on the same graphic as Mai Lemon to be honest with you. He’s that good. 24 receptions on the year, 424 yards, breaks down to a 17.7 average with three scores. And then on the right, their tight end Lake McCree, 16 receptions, 307 yards, two touchdowns, breaks down to a 19.2 average. All those averages are super high. Just like I told you, 10 yards across the board for every receiver. These guys get up the field incredibly well. They can break tackles, make guys miss, and you really got to worry about McCree in the tight end seam look, especially with un inexperienced backers, which I talked to you about in the Northwestern recap. One other option you’ll see at the tight end position with very similar stats to McCree is Walker Lions. Younger guy, very talented, similar build, long, lengthy, good and contested catches, and makes a lot of plays. So, you’re going to see them throw the ball. you’re going to see schemes that make it really tough on defenses to defend it and that’s where their offensive success success comes in. But I guess if you’re a defense, the good news on the flip side matchup wise is John Butler is a secondary le coach right from the NFL. The secondary has been pretty consistent all year and pretty good, but a lot of this is going to fall this weekend on Sierra Wright, Andrew Marshall. They’ve got to make plays consistently all week long. So big time matchup is these wide receivers. Can Nebraska limit yards after catch and big plays from this wide receiver group? Because nobody’s really done it well all year. Notre Dame kind of did, but they still got theirs. I mean, 530 yards per game is absolutely nothing to blink at. Their offensive line, no slide here if you’re watching on YouTube, but their offensive line’s been damned good. Five sacks on the year to Mava, six total as a team. and the backup got sacked once, but the scheme does a really good job at making offensive linemen be successful. The ball gets out quick. It’s a lot of screen looks. It’s a lot of motion, so they know who to adjust to. My pre- snaps reads are pretty pristine at this point within the scheme. Nebraska’s got to get the blitz going. You saw last week Northwestern when we got to Preston Stone late in the game when we get got after him, he really didn’t throw the ball incredibly well and he chucked it up there a few times. But we got to limit guys on the outside because a really good one-on-one and we got to get to the quarterback and make him make his mistakes because that’s the only time he really does. So, I would like to see a couple more blitzes out of Nebraska. And I think they will dial up those packages with the way the game looked last week against Northwestern. On the defensive side of the ball, let’s look at their defense as a whole. Not terrible, right? They couple years ago they were atrocious. They bring in Deant and Lynn. They he they’ve taken a significant step up from what they were, but they still had their struggles. 23.1 points per game rate puts them at 46 in college football. Opponent’s yards per game, 365. Middle of college football right at 52. Especially in the grand game of the Power Four puts them kind of just and they’re all right. opponent yards per play, 5.5, that’s 66th in college football. So, if Nebraska can establish what they want to do pretty early, this USC defense has some room to bend and Nebraska’s just got to finish their drives and get their points when when they’re allowed and they’ll put themselves in a good spot. There’s an opportunity there. Their defense overall has been blitzing a ton more in 2025. Deant Lynn’s gotten after the quarterback sacks on 9% of opponent drop backs in this season. that puts them top 15 in college football. They did, however, you want to say, here’s their green flag. Here’s what I think Nebraska will do. It’s this point right here. USC loses 34 to 24 to Notre Dame just two weeks ago. They gave up 306 yards on the ground. That was spread across. Obviously, Notre Dame has elite backs, better backfield across the board than Nebraska, I would say. Jeremiah Love was unreal in that game with 228 yards, I believe, of the 306, but that means there’s holes in the run defense. There are schemes there. There’s film out there for what Nebraska can set up and be successful on the offensive side of the ball. I hate sounding like one of those older boomers. No offense, if you’re a boomer watching the show, hit the like button, but run the damn ball. That’s where Nebraska is going to find success against USC’s defense. There is holes in the passing game as well, but few and far between and we have to avoid the mistakes to give their offense extra offense possessions. Couple of guys to highlight on this defense. Let’s start with Eric Gentry. Their linebacker, a really good player, 39 solo tackles, 48 total on the year and three force fumbles. Massive body, 66, 225. He’s a senior, ton of experience, he’s fast, he has elite closing speed. This is a Sunday guy through and through in the world of football. fourth year here at USC, fifth year overall. Started at Arizona State, came here, it’s been successful since, and he’s kind of been a part of that development of them having that terrible year just couple years ago and then now being somewhat of a serviceable defense, at least enough for what USC’s offense can be. On the back side of the defense, Bishop Fitzgerald, the NC State transfer, has really found himself a home here in Southern Cal. 28 solo tackles, five picks, one sack. And while you’re like one sack that that shouldn’t be on a stat sheet, he’s a safety. He’s a safety. Not very often do safeties get home on blitzes and nonetheless, but he did that against Bryce Underwood. So, he’s got the speed. He’s an elite secondary guy. He’s all over the place. And he will blit. They will blitz from everywhere. I told you their blitz numbers are up and they get to the quarterback 9% of the time, which is top 15 in college football. One of the reasons why is because they can blitz guys like Bishop Fitzgerald. So he’ll be all over the field. He also has five picks on the year. They’re five and two. That’s two games you want to spread him out where he didn’t have an interception. It’s damn impressive. So shout out Bishop Fitzgerald. He’s really found a home in Southern Cal. He’s a hell of a player as of now. Looking at the defense and kind of what teams have done against him the entire season. Opponents haven’t really run the ball a ton. It’s about a 50-50 split from the USC’s defensive perspective. They’re giving up 4.1 yards per rush, which puts them mid60s in college football, but they’re only facing around 33 runs rushes per game. Teams like Northwestern run the ball 50 60 times a game it almost feels like. So those numbers are down from the opponents they faced. On the passing side of things, the opponent’s completion percentage is 62%. Ranks middle of college football. Yards per pass. Here’s the little red flag of when they are getting beat in the passing game. seven and a half yards per catch against USC’s defense. So those middle hitch routes, maybe if you’re not breaking tackles, gaining seven yards, very productive, elongated drives, kind of what Nebraska wants to do. And maybe, little spoiler, is a key to my Nebraska success list this week. That’s where you kind of see it. But good defense overall, not great, kind of underperforming, but talent. That’s really the across the board what you can give to them. Do I think Nebraska can win this game? I’m a guy, if you’ve watched the show before and you’ve been a part of the show throughout the season, I have not picked a game where I think Nebraska’s going to lose. I’ve been wrong. I’m not perfect. I picked him to beat Minnesota on the road. They got druged. I I’ve been fairly close in the majority of Nebraska’s wins. I haven’t picked him to blow anybody out. If you’re a Husker fan, don’t leave the video. Make sure you already hit the subscribe. Don’t unsubscribe, but I got Nebraska dropping this one at Memorial Stadium this weekend. I do. They’re an underdog for a reason. Vegas usually knows a thing or two. And I hope I’m wrong. I’m a Nebraska fan through it. Through. I’m sitting in my basement right now surrounded by Husker gear in Husker gear talking about college football week to week. I’m going to be in the stadium season ticket holder dressed in all black hopefully in five coats cuz I hate being cold. But I don’t see it from the defense, from the experience that I know they have on offense and the talent and the speed and the linebacking core and what the holes I’ve seen in the defensive line, not being able to get to the quarterback, giving him too much time, and not really a standout player in the secondary. If there was, I would say it’s Sierra Wright, but I just don’t see it for me to be wrong. the keys to the game for Nebraska to win the football game. Opposite of what I think will happen in my mind and it could be PTSD. Let me know if you disagree in the comments. I just think USC is far more talented than us right now, more s sound within their scheme. Nebraska is still a young team. You got to give Emtt Johnson the ball again. I don’t know if he can carry back-toback 30 carries a game loads, but he he’s going to need to for Nebraska to keep USC’s offense off the field. The defense has to get off the field on third down. There’s been way too many big situations this year, especially as a fan in the stadium that it’s been loud. We’ve called a timeout, maybe given him a time to draw up a play, and we give up a third and eight or third and seven when we shouldn’t, or a fourth and three. We just can’t get that pressure on the quarterback that really sets them apart in situations. That’s a big red flag to me against this USC offense and what they want to do. We got to blitz early and often, and we got to get pressure. We haven’t done so consistently throughout the year. So why would anything be different in my mind in this situation and that’s where I’m at. I know it’s the first time I picked him to lose. I hope I’m wrong. Believe me, I would rather be a million times wrong than ever get this right. But that’s just where I see it. I got to be honest with what I see. It’s a talented football team. I respect USC fans. I think it’s actually one of the better fan bases in the Big 10. Not that it’s super deep or as passionate as some of the others, but they’re just not I like USC fans. I just haven’t seen him from the linebacking crew, the Dline crew and King the King Miller story if you’re kind of that a little bit positive negative Nebraska fan here. The King Miller story being the third stringer but being kind of, you know, working his way into the spotlight, him having a massive game running the ball against Nebraska. Doesn’t that just feel like a Nebraska thing to happen? So, I got I got Nebraska dropping this one to be honest with you. I think it’s the parody of the sport. We don’t know what Nebraska team’s going to show up. Could be the Minnesota version. Could be the Northwestern version. Could be the Cincinnati version. Could be the Houston Christian version. Who knows? It’s college football in 2025. But I got Nebraska dropping this one. Let me know if you disagree in the comments. Drop your score prediction for a chance at a free no rivals cap. I hope I’m dead wrong for Nebraska to get over the monkey off their back of the ranked win under Matt Rule and to win a prime time game in the national spotlight. Be nice to do that against not a Colorado team, but that one was fun. But a great opportunity to beat a ranked team here this weekend in Nebraska. And I just don’t think it happens. 1. People think uniforms are why we lose? Maybe we should stop wearing Scarlet and Cream by that logic. The Oregon Ducks wear different uniforms every game, I don’t want to hear it.

  2. If you look at conference stats they’re more around 34/35 points per game. They had like 1300 yards against the two cupcakes they played which is making the stats seem more extreme than they are.
