How does Wesley hit the ball while addressing the ball like this? This screenshot is just before he starts his takeaway, and he flushed it right down the middle.

I love it, because my set up is the exact opposite, i set up just before the toe.
bgomusicco
Over extend past the ball in back swing then reroute to inside on down swing.
ryo0ka
Ultimately you have to ask him, but I’d imagine that it helps him clear the hips better
ProfessorHillbilly
it is just an idiosyncrasy he has – helps him deliver from the inside because he knows his hands cannot return to where they are at address
LivermoreP1
He’s said it in a video before that he got the driver yips so bad early on in his career. This was the solution.
loserkids1789
It’s like Scottie, when you get to tour pro level you can have quirks with your swing that would wreck most of us hackers
BGOG83
It’s a common thing for people that develop a slice or when they have a massive two way miss. Forces you from inside. Then all you have to do is adjust face and stance to hit draws or fades.
I’ve seen coaches teach it. Messed me up, but it helps others.
carlton_urkel
It’s a myth that the downswing just returns to the setup position. Baseball proves it isn’t necessary to start an accurate swing by seeing the ball on the barrel, but so do golf slow motion swing videos where impact position isn’t the same as setup position. Most of us prefer to start with the ball centered on the face but some don’t.
jaw719
I need to try this. I hit a fade/slice 90% of the time. Maybe this will force me to come inside more.
Accidental-Hyzer
I just worked on a drill like this with my instructor last week. It helps you with an in-to-out path. If you’ve come back straight from a few inches away from the ball, your body kind of compensates on the downswing back to the ball.
We did it mostly with irons, but he said some people will do it with driver too.
dreamer-gg
I do this with my irons
opiate82
I have to set up like this with all my irons. My driver is the opposite though, need to set up off the toe.
Warm_Feedback2625
If he gets the hands moving a bit quicker at contact and has a super lag that would work also.
legless_chair
I can’t remember exactly how he said it but basically he had the yips or something and setting up like this fixed what issue he had.
ICantSeeDeadPpl
Because most people toe the club.
NoTAP3435
Wesley inspired me to start doing a minor version of this on my swing too.
It helps me not have my weight too far forward and fix my over-tucking.
Gullible_Mud_7885
My set up is the opposite, the ball is aligned to the toe of my driver. It’s just where my swing path ends up going
BobbyRayBands
The same way you get to Carnegie Hall.
Melodic_House_6793
In my opinion. He’s got too much knee flex. The tibia and fibula should be closer to vertical than his are. His nickname is Wedgely Bryant not 1 Wood Bryant.
George has the better swing of the two
Smash_Factor
It forces him to swing in to out or there’s going to be a problem.
FunctionBuilt
Because for some people, where you aim isn’t where you hit all the time. I have the same problem except from the other side of the ball. I position the toe of my club to about the centerline of the ball and actually aim in front of the ball by about an inch and I flush it fairly often. I’ve been doing this for years now and it’s been working for me. He talks a lot about how he lost his drive for like a year and tried everything – likely this is one weird quirk that worked for him to become consistent.
Gkirk87
This is actually a great example of sometimes the simplest solution is the best solution, he probably had a pattern of hitting extreme toe side on driver and instead of changing his swing, which is a pga tour level swing, he changed his set up.
Designer_Access
Go look at Vijay’s ball set up. Lots of pros favor the heel on the big dog. Mainly bc the shaft deflects and bows.
uunngghh
I do the same when I start toeing the ball too much
YBHunted
Most people would tell you the exact opposite for setup and theyd be absolutely right. You line it up more toe side when you rest your club on the ground because when its lifted off the ground during the swing it naturally brings the ball to the center of the face.
Idk what kind of wacky stuff Wesley does with his swing but he must either bring his arms way closer to his body during his swing or he leans backwards. He has to be doing something to account for not only the ball at the heel, but the ball even further at the heel when the club is elevated.
RentalGore
Face control.
Striketwothree
Adam Scott literally does this with every club
Steeezy__
He said he had the driver yips and it’s the only thing that worked for him
sammyt10803
Brad Dalke does this too
Scary_Return_3461
He’s just trying to force himself to exit left so he can eliminate the block/hook miss and straighten out his ball flight. I love watching him play and he’s seen a lot of benefit from this change.
S-Polychronopolis
That caught my eye too when I was watching this video today. Crazy.
dumptrucksrock
He comes inside the path on the downswing and compensates for it on the setup. Or at least I will assume based on my own experiences.
I routinely do the same thing, on occasion even swiping inside the ball without even touching it. I choose not to alter my setup, though, viewing it as a mechanical issue that needs addressing.
