The two-time defending champion and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will headline the field for the Hero World Challenge hosted by Tiger Woods – and he will be joined by Jordan Spieth, Billy Horschel, and Akshay Bhatia, who all received a late invite. The 2025 edition of the tournament is in the Bahamas at the beginning of December, and Woods will not be participating due to his most recent back surgery.

Woods hosts and usually participates in the event on a sponsors invite. But his inability to compete means an extra spot available, with Spieth among the three earning the call-up at the expense of the unfortunate Woods as he recovers.

It comes with Kai Trump, granddaughter of President Donald Trump and daughter of Woods’ current girlfriend, Vanessa, preparing to make her LPGA Tour debut on a sponsor’s invite. She will cross paths with Caitlin Clark in the process, who has made her feelings clear.

The 20-player field for the Hero World Challenge will include five of the top-10 players in the world, and Jordan Spieth will return to action since his last PGA Tour start came at the Wyndham Championship at the end of July where he finished T-31. Spieth earned one of the last invites to the Hero World Challenge, which he won in 2014 and set multiple tournament records.

Scheffler is just one of three past champions in the field for 2025, as he’s joined by 2016 champion Hideki Matsuyama and Spieth. Nine Ryder Cup players will also be in the Bahamas, including some champions from Europe such as Robert MacIntyre, Justin Rose and Sepp Straka. Team USA captain, Keegan Bradley, will also be in the field.

Some people are also making their debut at the Hero World Challenge, including J.J. Spaun, Chris Gotterup, and Andrew Novak, but this isn’t Spieth’s first time.

Spieth is a former world No. 1, but hasn’t won on the PGA Tour in three years since coming off the 2025 season. Spieth had wrist surgery last August and made his first showing since then at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February. The following week at the Phoenix Open, he finished T-4, which was one of his three top-10 finishes this year.

Gary Williams, a former broadcaster and host, thinks that Spieth can return to his best self.

“I look at him, and I thought this past season was encouraging, and I thought he was very transparent,” said Williams. “It was Gabby Herzig who asked the question about goal setting when he showed up at Pebble Beach.

“He talked about how it wasn’t so much goals; it was the aspiration of experiencing certain things before he got to the Masters, and I thought he actually did those things. We know, even if he’s in a mummified state at Augusta National, he lives in the top 10 there. He finished tied-14th, which is admirable.

“I think Spieth has not only a state of mind… Look, he has a family. I think that he is incredibly comfortable with who he is, but is also still intensely competitive. I think he’s going to win in 2026. I think that he will contend at Augusta National because he always does.”
