WACO, Texas – The UNT women’s golf team wrapped up the fall season with a third-place finish at the Bear Brawl at Ridgewood Country Club in Waco Tuesday.
Senior Mason Lewis led the way for the Mean Green in the 36-hole one-day event as she finished third on the individual leaderboard and shot a 138 (-2) over the two rounds. Lewis shot a 66 (-4) on the final round to jump up 12 spots into her third-place finish.
The 66 is a career-low round for the senior from Granbury, Texas, and her third-place finish is also a career best. She finished six strokes ahead of the No. 15 ranked player in the nation.
Junior Bouquet Subsomboon also had a strong tournament as she finished seventh overall with a 142 (+2). It’s her third career top 10 finish.
“We did what we needed to do at this event,” said head coach Michael Akers. “Playing with a top five and top 15 ranked team today certainly was great for our team. It should make our ladies realize how good we are. A few details and identifying who will be in our lineup in the spring will be important over the off season.”
UNT fell just behind No. 4 Texas A&M who took home the Bear Brawl title on Tuesday and No. 15 Baylor who hosted the tournament.
“Mason’s second round today was eye opening,” Akers added. “The cold front came through, and we dealt with gusts over 40 miles per hour. She did a great job adjusting.”
The Mean Green will hit the offseason riding the moment of the top three finish. They will be back in action on January 18 with a dual versus Houston Christian before beginning the Puerto Rico Classic in February.
