Here we look at Cole Redalen’s backhand form. This guy absolutely crushes the disc. Let’s dig in a little bit to something that looks a bit awkward to most of us, but that I don’t believe is really a problem.

hi guys welcome back to another overthrow disc golf video as always thank you so much for tuning in today we’re going to talk about when unconventional form is not bad form let’s get [Music] started so on the screen I’ve got a young gun by the name of colea dollan you have probably seen him before we get too deep into this Cole sent me this a couple months ago and he wanted me to let you know as the form nerd that he is is he’s changing things in his form still so this is probably not even his current form but there are some things that will go through that seem pretty glaringly obvious for some of us that I don’t think are quite as big of an issue as we might make them out to be so I’m going to go through this footage that Cole sent over and the first thing that most of you will probably notice oh there’s volume so the thing you notice is his foot is completely backwards right and you probably notice this if you try to fix this problem in your own form right and again here we go again walking up foot completely backwards right how come Cole can get away with this and you can’t well let me show you well of course I’m speaking of the general U that is YouTu right I have to kind of take all 50,000 of you and put you in one little box of not as flexible not as athletic as these other people right which changes with personal lessons so for the general populace if you get to the position where your foot is this far back for whatever reason there are two things that you’re going to suffer from from this position you have option one of oh crap I’m back back here and I need to get forward well I’m going to start opening up my hips and get into this position where they’re locked out we see from Cole’s video that well that’s not a problem for him right he’s able to go here and his hips don’t need to swing wide open and he doesn’t have to get into this super flared position where there’s just no Mobility here right so that’s why we generally advise okay this foot needs to be probably no further back than about 45° for most of you not to automatically open your hips the second thing that it affects for most people if you’re here and you decide well hey I know I’m not supposed to swing my hips open like this so I’m not going to I’m just going to do this well at that point you don’t get the opportunity to have a very strong brace and pull through balanced so something’s got to give there well Cole doesn’t have to make those concessions with his foot being back like this Cole Cole can still get a solid plant here and his hips don’t have to fly forward for him to do it so he kind of gets to have his cake and eat it too now as a coach when I see people get in positions like this of course just like your eyes went to it my eye goes to it but then I have to look past what the actual technique or form piece is and say hm does that mess with the fundamentals and the ability to execute those in Cole’s case here the answer is no for most of you watching the answer is absolutely so for most people most of you you should start in the range and stay in the range if you’re building your form someone like cole really what happened was he learned to throw far first and then as a coach if you start working with someone like that you’ve got to decide do I really change this because it’s it’s kind of weird to the eye right but he’s able to get all the fundamentals so does it need to be changed is there a big upside to changing this in my opinion there’s probably not a massive upside to changing this and with someone who already throws this far you’ve got to say okay he’s throwing further than the competition already is the upside to changing this you know another 50 ft or 100t just going to give him a absolute massive we weapon to just bludge in the competition or am I going to try to change something that’s very natural for him at the moment at the potential risk of screwing everything up despite this let’s go back into the booth and see what Cole is executing very very very very well so let’s look at his throw real quick from a fundamental aspect right he he gets them all good coil here nice back swing solid plant he makes sure that he delays his arm moving forward till after the plant right so he plants and then he throws arms come in tight to the body nice pocket obviously he’s got this back leg still back here still counter waiting we’re going to talk about that in a future video boom still tight not over rotated with the body simple clean not easy to do but really doesn’t leave anything to be desired yeah that basically covers it so obviously coal has solid fundamentals you don’t throw far without solid fundamentals not this far so probably other aspects of the game to to look out for in my opinion uh all of his links uh for his sponsors and things like that are in the description and we’re going to pin them in the top comment so if you want to support Cole visit those take a look around even if you’re just window shopping it’s okay to until next time [Music] peace [Music] no

Love this direction Josh! Great video.
Third! 😅 Such a great concept and so true! Love this! And look at that quiet head! 🙂
TLDR:
If its bad, its bad. If its bad but good then it isn't bad.
The thing i notice about Cole's form is he slightly rounds. if one were to draw a straight line from his extension, he would be a lot further left than where the disc is actually released from.
I do something similar and I throw like 460, but I don’t brace my plant leg enough.
Hello!
What is the app you are using when reviewing footage?
Nice video!
I'd love to see a singular video going over what the core fundamentals are or the non negotiables that everyone throwing over 500' is doing.
And then more like this that are the 'nice to haves'. Cole gets away with his back foot, Calvin has a little elbow dip etc
Nice to see an explanation. Also, I do believe the phrase is, "you can't eat your cake and have it too." Everybody can have a cake and then eat it. What you can't do is eat your cake and then still have it 🙂 Thanks for the vids.
Love this type of breakdown. Especially as an adaptive thrower who has to make small tweaks from “normal”, it’s really helps my understanding on evaluating what’s happening as I’m learning
I've seen tons of form feedback where people say the back foot has to point sideways. It's BS, imo. All you gotta do is go through slow-mo of top pros like Simon and see their back foot pointing 45deg, not 90.
The disparities in form amongst those who throw far has always been very interesting to me. People who teach disc golf usually focus on the similarities and are dismissive of the dissimilarities. Those movements that make an individuals throw unique are what catches the eye, but that doesn't mean that they are a problem. And, there are large variations from grip to follow through. It seems that for almost any " you must do this" advice you can find a successful thrower whose form contradicts that assertion.
Cole is very ER hip dominant, you can see he stands and walks a bit duck footed normally.
The key is he keeps off his back heel and by being on his toe he easily transfers to the inside of the foot instead of tipping over
Completely agree. Thanks for adding this nuance to the conversation.
Great video. Keep it up.
I absolutely love this video Josh! I hadn't looked at Cole's form like this before. I couldn't place what was different at a glance, but this dialed it in for me. 🙂
Somehow you are the casting for a liveaction earthworm jim. And hell yeah
Paul made a great comment about weight and run up speed to help correct Nate's early release issues during the Jomez Waco front 9 practice round. You may have already watched the video.
In a nutshell, having your weight too far forward on your plant leg will cause an early release.
I think more importantly, his other comments mentioned matching your run up speed with your arm speed, which I found interesting. It effects your timing. People with slower arm speeds may not be able to afford a faster run up, because it will not allow their arm speed to catch up. Finding a good run up speed is something people can work on to find the right timing that works with their own personal arm speed.
I just went out and tried the correct form vs Cole's form. The easy winner was Cole. More distance. More accurate. And way easier on the body. I'd definitely challenge you guys to get in the field and try it for yourselves. I'm thinking this form could be a breakthrough for a ton of people. (MA3 player)
Didn’t cole just tear something in his hip this season? Lol
I wouldn’t even call the back foot unconventional. A ton of top pros point their rear foot backwards on the last step. It might even be more common than pointing it sideways.
