Hey I’m Georgia Ball, welcome to my channel! I’ve created my YouTube channel to help you get better at golf, but most of all enjoy the journey and have fun on the course with videos uploaded weekly.
I am a PGA Professional golf coach who has played golf for almost two decades and on this channel you will see me play on some of the best courses in the world, equipment reviews, going head to head with other golfers and plenty of tips to improve your game.
One of my main goals on this channel is to make you play better golf by uploading plenty of videos on a range of coaching topics such as golf lessons, how to drive the golf ball longer, golf tips, golf drills, how to hit your irons better, how to fix your slice, how to fix your hook and how to hit your irons closer to the hole. Not to mention all the help you need to hole more putts.
If you keep topping your golf shots, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common mistakes I see golfers make on the range every single day. And the good news is it’s an easy fix once you know what’s causing it. So, in this video, I’m going to show you some tips on how you can improve your strikes and stop topping the ball for good. And there’s one key move that nine out of 10 golfers miss, and I’m going to show you that in just a second. But before we get into it, if I could just ask one favor, and it’d be hit that subscribe button. It takes a second to do, it means you’ll never miss a video like this, and you’re going to get better at golf in the process. So, hit subscribe, and let’s get into it. The dreaded top shot. As I say, if this is you, you’re not alone. It sneaks into our round and it happens a lot. So, before we get into fixing the top shot, what does it look like? Now, the top shot is when we go to hit the ball, but in instead of making clean contact, we make contact with the top of the ball, it flies low, it popped up in the air, and it doesn’t go anywhere. Now, there are some key causes to this. The first and biggest mistake that I see golfers make when it comes to top shots is swaying rather than turning on the back swing. If you sway, then your low point is going to be here. To get back to the ball, we’ve then got to flick. The club head takes over, and that’s when we’re going to hit the top of the ball. Another huge mistake that I see golfers make is loss of posture. So, when it comes to the down swing, as we go to hit the ball, we move too early. What we call an early extension. Again, the hands, the club head flicks and we hit the top of the ball. And another huge mistake I see is no weight transfer. Now, weight transfer can be difficult to understand, but we’re going to do a drill at the end of this to simplify it. And why lack of weight transfer causes a top shot is because when we make our swing, we move all of our weight onto our trail side, which is bad. And then to hit the ball, a lot of golfers stay here. And again, the club head wins the race, which is bad. We’re going to hit the top of the ball, and it’s not going to be very consistent. So, this is what a top shot looks like. And it’s not very nice. We’re going to slide, and we’re going to have the hands lead the way. And now, the biggest thing you’ve been waiting for, how do we fix it? So, you may have heard me mention just now about a low point. A low point when it comes to striking the ball and stopping our tops is so crucial. You may have heard me speak about this many of times before in other videos, and it’s all about how we can hit the ball and then the ground. Our low point is what we call in in golf an arc. So the arc of the swing finishes at the bottom here and the bottom is the low point. If you move your low point to here, then we’re going to hit the ground and then we’re going to top the ball. So we need to make sure that our low point stays over the ball so that the bottom of the arc is here and we can have the the club head follow behind and the hands win the race. We’ve got three amazing drills that you can use to fix this. So, let’s dive into them. So, drill number one is what we call the towel drill. All you need to do is get yourself a towel and pop it on the ground behind the ball. Now, this is difficult to do to start off. So, make sure you leave yourself a lot of room to begin with. And then the harder we want to make it, the closer we bring the towel to the ball. So, starting off around about three to four club heads behind the ball. Okay. From here, all we’re going to do is we’re going to make our swing with the aim of missing the towel. If you’re someone that sways, then on your down swing, you’re going to hit the towel. If you’re someone that loses posture, we’re going to hit the towel. And if you’re someone that allows the wrist to flick, which is bad, again, we’re going to hit that towel. So, if you can make contact with the ball, avoiding the towel, this is going to allow the low point to stay exactly where it should be over the ball, you’ll see your hands win the race rather than the club head win the race, and we’re going to stop topping our shots. Again, this is difficult to do, so leave enough space, but the better we get at it, the closer we can bring that in. That looks easy, but it’s really difficult. Give it a try and just see how good your strikes become. So, again, we don’t want to fall back. We want to make sure we’re making we’re brushing the ground. If anything, we’re hitting the ball and then the ground. Okay? So, we’re not hitting back, we’re swinging forward. Now, another drill, which is one of my ultimate favorites. You’ve seen me do this many times before. It’s the tea drill. All you need to do is pop a tea in front of the ball around about two ball widths in front. Now, the aim of this drill is to make your swing, hit the ball, and then take the tea. This again is so so good because it forces your low point to stay center. It really allows you to feel again the handle winning the race and it really starts to incorporate that weight shift because if you don’t shift your weight and you stay back, you’re going to flick the top of the ball and we’re going to avoid the tea. So let’s do this now. It’s so good. Hit the ball and then take the tea. Have a few practice swings. Your divot wants to be after the ball, not before the ball. If it’s before the ball, we’ve made one of those errors. It’s going to top every time and it’s going to be so inconsistent. So, have our divot after the ball where the tea is. And just look how good your shots become. And now the third and final drill, which is an overall fantastic drill because it brings everything together. Again, it can be difficult to do if you’ve not tried this before and it throws your timing off because it involves some sequencing, but when you get it right, it’s so good and it really again helps you incorporate weight transfer because weight transfer is key to stop the ball and also if you’re wanting to gain power, consistency, and just overall better shot, this is the drill, the stepping drill. All we need to do is set up over the ball like we normally would, but take our lead foot and pop it next to the trail foot like so. Okay, take some practice swings first cuz if you can, as I say, it can be quite difficult to do. All we need to do is make our swing. But before we reach the top, we’re going to step forward with our lead foot and we’re going to swing down. Okay, just see how good that is with weight shift. I’m not staying back. If I was to stay back, I’d stay here. It’s forcing me to hit down, which is compression. And there’s going to be a lot of power here. You’re not going to top the ball again. Okay. So, feet together this side. I’d say as we’re about halfway back, that’s when we start stepping forward. So, let’s give it another go. Swing halfway back. Step forward, down. You can hear the whoosh. It’s that powerful. Halfway back, step forward, down. You’re going to have clean divots. You may not hit it great to start with because it is difficult, but once you crack it, it’s so good. And with those three drills, you’ll stop to the ball in no time. Now, just to recap, the top shot can be fixed. It’s not impossible. And you can see putting those three drills together, we can improve the top shots, but also we can have better results. We can have better consistency, more power, and just an overall better strike. And the main aim of those three drills was one again, stop hitting behind the ball, which leads us to hit the top of the ball. And that’s all about low point. So the low point to begin with is over the ball for our irions, for our fairway woods, very similar. Driver is very different. So we’re talking about irons mainly here. So low point stays over the ball. From there at strike we have our hands leading way. We do never have the club head leading leading way with our irons. That’s when we’re going to top it. And then from there we spoke about weight transfer. So, if you can include and improve your low point, handle leading way, and weight transfer, then you’re going to become a much better golfer. As I say, they’re tricky to do, but the more you do them, the easier they get, and you’re going to have better results at the end of it. Now, if you took value from today’s video, I would really appreciate it if you could hit that subscribe button. It takes a second to do. It means you’re going to get better at golf, and you’re never going to miss a video like this. So, thank you so much and I’ll see you in the next
