June 12th, 1991. One legend was trying to end his story with a crown. The most legendary point guard to ever live. But the other legend was trying to finally establish his legacy with a championship. That night, not just a finals game was played between two iconic players. That night represented the funeral for an era and the coronation of a king. Michael Jordan went all out against Magic Johnson and then embarrassed him. What happened inside the forum that night still gives fans chills even 34 years later. It’s game five of the 1991 NBA Finals. Chicago is in the lead 3 to1, one win away from their first ever title. Standing in away is Magic Johnson. Identity of the Showtime Lakers. Kareem gone. Worthy and Scott injured. Magic is fighting alone, trying to keep an entire era alive. But across from him is Michael Jordan. Hungry, ruthless, tired of excuses, tired of the Pistons. This was his final exam. His quest for respect. One game, two eras, everything on the line. And what if I told you Magic had 20 assists that night and still got embarrassed? Basketball in the ’90s was different and all thanks to Magic Johnson. He not only revolutionized the point guard position, but he did so by becoming the point god. His Lakers were attractive and they could beat anyone. And that was easy to prove because in the 1980s, Kareem and Magic’s Lakers had been NBA champions five times. But the beast they were about to face was different from the rest. The Lakers had faced a superstar like Bird, an all-around talent capable of doing whatever it took to make his team win, but not a relentless scorer like Jordan, capable of destroying any team’s defense. Bird himself called MJ god disguised as a basketball player. And Jordan, tired of continuous defeats against the Detroit Pistons, had been able to evolve into his best version. Now he was unstoppable. But that wasn’t all. The team surrounding Michael and the Bulls was tremendously strong. Unlike during the early seasons of his career, Scotty Pippen and Horus Grant had developed into key pieces of a championship team. That trio allowed Chicago to prevail over the Pistons. And now as Eastern Conference champions, only the Lakers stood in their way. The Lakers made a statement in the first game, winning in Chicago despite Jordan’s 36 points. But from that moment on, Michael dominated the series, leading the Bulls in scoring in each and every game and allowing Chicago to win the next three. Just one away from his first ring, MJ was already dreaming of lifting the Larry O’Brien trophy. Never, ever had he been so close. June 12th, 1991, Michael Jordan is about to write the most important chapter of his career. his life, his image, his legacy, his influence. Everything would change if the Bulls managed to beat the Lakers. Everyone was waiting with baited breath as if they wanted to see the outcome of the most iconic story in basketball history. And then game five of the 1991 finals began. It took Magic about 5 seconds to make his first assist thanks to Terry Teagle knocking down the fadeaway jumper over John Paxton. But the Lakers, despite many injuries, still had a tremendously powerful roster that had allowed them to get there. Bloodey Diva, one of those players, was able to use his size in one of the first plays of the game. But Jordan, having evolved as a playmaker, was ready to show Magic that he too was an elite organizer. At the first opportunity he had, MJ hit John Paxton on the left wing for his first assist of the night. I mean, giving Jon the ball in the mid-range, it was an automatic bucket. Right after that, Michael stole the ball from Magic Johnson after a pass from Debb and went straight to the hoop, rising above the Los Angeles sky to finish with a strong dunk on the other end. A textbook example of how defense can be easily converted into instant offense. Meanwhile, the entire Lakers offense fell on the hands of Magic Johnson, who was always able to make the most difficult pass look easy. His game reading was perfect, allowing players like Elden Campbell to shine with plays like this. But Michael was always able to respond immediately. On this occasion, John Paxton does what any Bulls player has to do in transition. That is either pass it to Jordan or pass it to Pippen. This time it’s MJ who finishes with the layup over Vlad Devak. On the next play, we have the opposite example. This time the Bulls look for Pippen who is able to finish with a fast break dunk after some confusion happened during the Lakers offensive possession. But the Showtime Lakers were always ready to counterattack, using the motion offense to generate great looks like this one for Campbell’s finish. The Bulls pressed full court, applying an intensity rarely seen. But the Lakers managed to beat the pressure with precise passes that also allowed them to get easy baskets. Bill Jackson wanted to stifle the Lakers, but they knew how to deal with all kinds of teams thanks to their experience. But that pressure on some occasions worked out well for Chicago like on this play where Michael strips the ball from DevO to get two more fast break points with yet another dunk. However, Magic was still determined to carry the Lakers again finding Campbell with an amazing no look pass in transition. The game was extremely even. In fact, the combination between Magic and Campbell was undoubtedly the most repeated in the first half. It seemed that time and time again, the Lakers were able to punish the Bulls overextended defense. That fast passing game remained infallible, even as the Showtime era was breathing its last breaths. This time, it was Pippen who responded to the Lakers run with another perfect execution and transition that allowed him to add another dunk to his collection. But it was Tony Smith who with this jump shot put an end to a first half that satisfied all the fans at the Great Western Forum. At halftime, the Lakers were leading on a scoreboard. They only had a rotation of seven players, and as we’ve seen, some of their key players were injured. But they had something the Bulls didn’t, experience. Magic and company had been in this situation so many times that it was normal for them. However, Jordan had never played in the finals. He didn’t know what it was like to win them, but thanks to his performance in the second half, he would never know what it was like to lose them. The Bulls came out much more inspired in the second half. In some plays, they seemed capable of imitating the style of the Showtime Lakers with plays like this one, but Jordan in particular came out much more aggressive. First on defense, as in this play where he steals and saves the ball just for Pippen to get another bucket in transition, but also on offense where his drives combined with his crafty finishes allowed him to start warming up in that third quarter. Moments later, Jordan swat’s AC Green’s layup to get the ball and find Pippen again in transition. His defensive presence at that point in a game helped Chicago survive. In fact, the Lakers halfgard defense was doing a great job and those steals that Jordan was able to get were crucial to the development of the game. But as the end grew nearer, Michael began to take on more offensive responsibilities. Check out this fadeaway. He connects over Tony Smith. Completely unstoppable. Led by MJ, the Bulls defense continued to step up by the minute and Scotty Pippen was literally collecting easy points, punishing the Lakers poor defensive transitions. The Lakers in need of scoring saw Magic expand his game. In the third quarter, he knocked down a top of the key three, a shot he had been practicing a lot during the last years of his career. But Michael continued to lead the Bulls offense with plays like this one in which after the double team, he goes for the skip pass to Pippen on the weak side, who’s then able to knock down the midi. And with the score tied, Jordan stars in one of the biggest highlights of the game. After a great offball move, he runs to the paint to catch the lob from Scottie Pippen. A play that perfectly represents the enormous chemistry the two stars had at the time. Michael continued to score, calmly reaching his spots, controlling the pace of the game, and avoiding defenders. Easy layup, but Magic always responded with a pass that only he could make look obvious. The Lakers remained close on the scoreboard. Again and again, Johnson made the Chicago Bulls defense look like a modern AAOU team. Jordan, now in rhythm, continued to score points for the Bulls in an offense that revolved around him, like on this play where he drains the midi after getting to his spot. Every time he got the ball, it was an opportunity to attack one-on-one. This time, his victim was Campbell, who watches in amazement as Jordan levitates for a while just before hitting the double clutch shot. Simply unreal. But Magic responded with another crazy assist. Calculated inch perfect passes had become the Lakers only offensive resource. It was impressive to see how one man could win a game by himself without putting the ball in the basket. But Jordan found Pippen wide open for three with yet another assist that allowed the Bulls to survive. Jordan realized that the skip pass was destroying the Lakers defense and he continued to abuse it. This time to find John Paxton wide open in the left corner. And then Paxton hit an incredible and difficult layup against Magic Johnson. But Sam Perkins after a pass from Magic responded almost immediately with a beautiful hook shot. Everyone knew it was Jordan’s moment as he dodged all the gold players to find the space he needed to make the layup. And on the next play, he had the ball again and he found the hot John Paxton wide open on the right wing to hit the dagger at the forum. And Michael with this steal sealed the game. The six-point difference was too much with just a few seconds left on the clock. Jordan had done it. Finally, he had been crowned NBA champion. Jordan celebrated as if it were the last title he would ever win. He had just beaten Magic Johnson by outplaying him at his game, being the main facilitator of the Bulls with 10 assists. He had finally gotten a thorn out of his side. He could finally bid to become the greatest player of all time. Michael Jordan never lost to finals and won six NBA championships in just 8 years. The Lakers, meanwhile, went through a dark period. Magic Johnson’s retirement marked the end of one of the most glorious eras the city of Los Angeles had ever seen. After that, they had to wait almost 10 years to return to that stage, thanks to the era of Kobe and Shaq. That night wasn’t just about winning a championship. It was about a man finally becoming immortal. Michael Jordan buried an era and lit the fire for another. For Magic, it was the end of showtime. For MJ, it was the start of something greater than basketball itself. six rings, countless memories, and a legacy that still haunts every debate to this day. That night in June was the moment the NBA changed forever. And if you were lucky enough to witness it, you for sure remember it right now.
