Local hero Miguel Tabuena delighted home fans and withstood a barrage of birdies from his nearest rivals as a solid seven-under par 65 proved good enough for a dominating three-shot win in the US$2 million International Series Philippines.
Playing at his home course, Sta. Elena Golf Club, just a week after he had to pull out of the SJM Macao Open with neck spasms, Tabuena finished on a 24-under total, while the Japanese duo of Kazuki Higa (65) and Yosuke Asaji (67) were tied second at 21-under.
The win, Tabuena’s fourth, makes him the most successful Filipino golfer on the Asian Tour. The previous record of three titles was held by Angelo Que. He also broke through the US$3 million in career earnings on the Tour with his first International Series title.
Higa, winner of back-to-back titles in Korea and Chinese Taipei, was back on top of the Asian Tour Order of Merit with the finish.

[Music] Santa Elena Golf Club, our home for this championship week. It’s a past 72, 7,3 yds in the Greens running the fastest they’ve been all week. 10’8 on the stint meter. Had a couple of light showers this morning, but nothing too much to bother the players or the fans that have gathered. Temperature still around 33° C. Well, let’s get you up to speed with what’s already happened this Sunday. Starting with the captain of the four aces on the Live Golf League, Justin Johnson picking up his 23rd birdie of the week there at the 10th, taking the two-time major champion to 13 under par. But is it too little too late? Kazuki Heagger struggled to craft good birdie opportunities on what was a hugely consistent performance Saturday. He wasted no time picking up a first birdie of the day. an excellent approach setting up one on the opening hole and then on the par five third going for the green into twice a winner on the Asian tour already this season heer finding the putting surface that would lead to a two putt birdie he’s at 16 under and starting as one of the three co- leaders Chinese Samson Zang off to a nice start there’s birdie at the par fiveth time is birdie this par five at the very next hole One of the tougher holes here with water running all along the left side. Samson Zang has got his ball striking back in his second and third round. After a rough first round, but off to a nice start, two under par through four. Is this a day that the local favorite delights his loyal following? Miguel Tabua part his opening hole, starting the day in a three-way share. This was his T-shot on the 206 yd par three second which led to his first birdie of the day. And then on the very next hole, the par five third, a second birdie in three holes. What a fantastic start. And you can hear he’s getting the crowd excited. There is a great amount of support behind Miguel Tabua at Santa Lena this final round. It’s a two-way tie with Zen and Tabina at 19 under. their fellow co-leader coming into Sunday. Saro on earth stuck in neutral with four straight pars. The younger of the Brian brothers, Wesley, here just getting his final round started. Second shot into the par 510th for the one-time winner on the PGA tour. Trying to get that uh creep along towards the front edge of the green, but well that’s not a bad spot to miss it. Wesley Brian’s third. Play that craftily into the bank. Taking some sting out. Look at this. Wesley Brian getting Sunday off to a terrific start. [Music] Charles Schwarzel on the ninth. Just couple under par for his round. Wow. Lovely shot. going to play next week also in the link Hong Kong Open. 11 Filipinos teed it up at the start of the week. Just three survived the halfway cut. This is one of them. Justin Kiban for birdie at 10. [Applause] Certainly played the par fives well this week. Kiban second shot for Mark Leechman at the reachable par 58. Oh, well that’s a tapping eagle. He’s finally got his round going and don’t count this man out. He misses this then it’s time to really get aggressive and often times that backfires. Sad case of deja vu for the tie. Back to back bogeies slips him to 15 under par. The tall Indian Gagenjet Bullard loves playing in these conditions. 11 victories on the Asian tour, but this is a lengthy one for Birdie at eight. Oh, he’s at it again. Gagenjet Buller. That takes him into a share of fourth. Germany’s Max Rott. Decent spot to be chipping from the back of nine. And in it goes for Maximleian Rott. The turn in 35. Oh, got it then. That’s my plug. Oh goodness. Even worse, he’s on the down slope now. Chase Kepka found the fairway on the T-shot. Tree not impeding the ball fly. Reachable in two. And what a shot. That’s a really good eagle opportunity. His speed has been excellent. Wow. Wow. Indeed. A great bogey save for Samson Zeng. Keeps him in a share of the lead with Tabo at 18 under par. Really wants to convert this one. right half. Hear gets within two. A stumble from Taboa and Zang have brought a host of other players right back into the fold. 171 yds playing it back in his stance trying to keep it low. It might be a nine, believe it or not. That was well struck. Well, what a good looking line just left of the hole. [Music] Caught by Asaji. Finally finding his first birdie of the round. Now Tabuina with a a little head scratcher here, Jerry. Yeah, it is. But that one club length cliff clean in place gave him a much better angle. still going to land on the little shoulder coming off the bunker and kick it right. Oh, once again he judges the speed beautifully. Look at this. Miguel Tabuina an almighty roar. His fifth eagle of the week comes at the eighth hole. Came on says Miguel. 20 under par. He’s very stoic. We he played as an amateur in the live golf promotions event once and uh there are a lot of people who were who were buying stock in this young man at the time and I think still are. Lovely birdie there for Samson Zen cuts the deficit to just one. He had trouble here in the first round hitting the trees just about 40 yards off the tea leading to a double bogey. Good T- shot. Oh, excellent second. Delicate one for Yuki here. Ra certainly is integrain this chip. His up and downs have been excellent today. And that’s another example. It’s an evil opportunity for Haga. Right to left. Needs to keep the pace up slightly uphill. Go, go, go, go, go. He’s got the speed just a fraction wide. Uh, into the green side bunker into Dustin Johnson on the good side of this pin position. [Applause] No danger here whatsoever. Yep. [Applause] [Music] Well, that’s the salvo from Samson. Birdie putt for Korean Suman Lee having a nice day today. Four under par for his round. H getting an additional birdie. Good playing so far. Just carrying himself and walking. So much purpose. Another one goes to Buena inches ahead at 21 under. Smack on Tabina’s line is Sana. It’s only the 11th hole. You can’t call a must makes but it’s pretty close at this point if he wants to hold that trophy at the end of the day. Stays three behind Sana. I almost made an ace here on the second round. Justin Kiban. This is for birdie at 17. Knew that was tracking. Current PGA Tour player and YouTube star Wesley Bryan just concluding his round. Six under par for the event. Nice showing. When you can get done with a round of golf and you feel like you didn’t leave any shots out there, it’s the I think the rarest feeling in all of golf. A costly bogey for Samson Zen. Final round of 200 par for Patrick Reed heading into Hong Kong next week as the defending champion. Mark Leechman attempt. This will get him to have the crowd celebrate. Getting this on the green would be amazing, but what a time for two awful breaks in a row. Played it like a bunker shot. Oh, that’s that’s ridiculous right there. Absolutely ridiculous. Heading into this hole with a two-shot lead. Hit to the good side of the hole. Dare he start to believe this may very well be Miguel’s magical day. Oh, hit a good shot onto the green. He got He’s got a great look at this one. Slightly downhill. Beautiful. [Applause] Charles Schwarzel three under par for his round to finish in style. Go on, give us a dance, Charl. That’s a nice way to cap off your week in the Philippines. Good distance [Applause] [Music] and inside of Samson Zang. You still have to under the most intense pressure in front of all these people still hit the shots and perform. And he’s doing that like a magician today all weekend long. Another one goes to Buena’s lead stretches to Thor. Ain’t nobody raiding on his parade today. Now Asaraji for his birdie ahead. Must make here the crowds roar behind us slightly right to left. Boy, when he has a look in, he is a terrific putter. Yukasi keeping things interesting. First sign of nerves for me, Tim. He’s got not a lot of green to work with. All downhill, down green. He’s been so steady with the short game all day. [Laughter] Wouldn’t you know it, Yosuk Asaji with the most unlikely of twos at 17. Extremely awesome right there. Consider the score even. Finally, Sarret gets one to go his way. An Eagle three on 16. Oh my goodness, the drama of the last couple of minutes. What’s Samson going to do, Jerry? Oh, he’s going to jar it too, isn’t he? You’re not kidding. They are putting on a show for this crowd in the final group. Oh, we should have provided Jerry with some earplugs because his ears will be ringing from here to next Tuesday. Now, second shot into the last for Gagenjit Bullahar. Ah, beautiful shot. Good pin location today. 216 from the left. You’ve got to carry at 15 to get on that top tier. It’s all over it. Yeah. Was it ever. Great approach shot here for Heaga. Got a good read off Assari right to left. Great way to end the championship for Kazuki Higa. Four straight birdies to close. Ends his week in the Philippines at 21 under Park. Stunning. Magnificent Miguel Tabuina. 65 65 65 that’s his mom Lorna twice a club champion here at Santa Elena he’s done it and he mentioned um earlier on in the week and all throughout the course of the week in fact that this is the strongest field that has ever been assembled in the well that has been assembled in the Philippines for the last 30 years going back to the to the Johnny Walker in 1995 and long may we continue to return to this beautiful part of the world.
