On this day in history, Woods scored his first PGA win at the Las Vegas Invitational at TPC Summerlin. He beat Davis Love III in a playoff after finishing the four-day tournament 27 under. Woods took home $297,000 for his victory.

That seems like a small purse now, but 29 years ago it was a big deal, especially for a man who’d just turned 20. Woods would go on to win 82 more tournaments, tying with Sam Snead for most wins in PGA history.
He’d also win more major championships than any other golfer besides the late Jack Nicklaus.
