Billy Horchel believes it’s time for the PGA Tour, not the PGA of America, to take control of the US RDER Cup team. Currently, team USA is managed by the PGA of America, while Europe side operates under the DP World Tour. After another painful defeat on home soil at Beth Paige Black Horchel says the US should take a page from Europe’s book and establish a closer connection between its main professional tour and its national team. Speaking to the Golf Channel, Horchel explained that Europe’s strength lies in the inclusivity and familiarity between its players, officials, and staff. Something he feels is missing in the US setup. I’ve talked with some players, big names, who have been part of Ryder Cups. And what I told them is this. Over the last five or six years, I’ve learned that the European Tour actually runs their Ryder Cup team. Horchel said that means players see those people all the time. They know the staff. They talk about RDER Cup logistics years in advance. Things like hotels, team environment, and how to make everything better. We just don’t have that with the PGA of America. They do a great job. No one’s denying that. But I believe it’s time for the PGA Tour, or at least people from within it, to take over team USA operations. The PGA of America can still run the overall event, handle sponsorships and corporate aspects, but the team itself should be in the hands of the tour. That way we’d have people working year round on the RDER Cup, regularly present at tournaments, and building relationships with players so that details don’t slip through the cracks. The call for reform comes after team USA suffered their second straight defeat, losing 15 to13 to Europe despite playing on home soil. Captain Keegan Bradley has since opened up about how deeply the loss has affected him since the Ryder Cup. It’s been one of the toughest times of my life, Bradley admitted. When you win, it’s glory forever. When you lose, it stays with you for life. I don’t think I’ll ever truly get over it. We planned so much, worked so hard, and the first two days went as badly as we could have imagined. It was emotional. Honestly, it was just sad.
