Jordan Speaf hasn’t teed it up in a competitive round since August. Yet, his name continues to dominate one of the PGA Tour’s biggest talking points, the fairness of sponsor exemptions. The three-time major champion and 13time PGA Tur winner last appeared at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, finishing tied for 38th before stepping away from competition. For most players, such a break would raise alarm bells. Only the top 50 on the FedEx Cup standings secure full exemption to play in the tour’s lucrative signature events next season. But for SPE, currently sitting 87th on the FedEx fall standings, there seems to be little concern. Instead of grinding through fall tournaments to lock in his position, SP has opted for an extended off season, confident that sponsor exemptions will keep him in the mix regardless. This attitude hasn’t gone unnoticed. On the Shotgun podcast, golf analyst Andy Johnson criticized Spath’s decision and the system that allows it. I think Brian Rolap, who’s trying to figure out how to make all our events more relevant, has to look at this and say, “Well, this is messed up,” said Johnson. Speed of the regular season at number 56, leaving him vulnerable to being leapfrogged by players competing in the fall. Yet, his security blanket sponsor exemptions means he can comfortably sit out without losing sleep. According to Johnson, this undermines the PGA Tour’s efforts to make its competition more merit-based. The most interesting player in the AON Next 10 is just saying, “Nah, I’ll just take my whole off season because I know the safety nets of this uncompetitive tour.” He added, “Under the AON Next 10 program, players ranked 51 to 60 earned spots in select signature events, including the AT&T Pebble Beach, ProAM, and the Genesis Invitational. SPE, however, seems unconcerned, relying instead on the popularitydriven sponsor invites that continue to favor big names that in 2025 alone, SPE reportedly received five sponsor exemptions, while Ricky Fowler got six despite inconsistent performances. Critics argue that these invitations unfairly take opportunities away from more deserving players working to climb the ranks. Even some fans have voice frustration, claiming the PGA Tour’s reliance on sponsor favoritism contradicts its push for a more competitive and transparent system. The tour, for its part, is planning to tweak its exemption policies starting in 2026 for restricted sponsor exemptions previously reserved for players from the DP World Tour, Korn Ferry Tour, and Q School will be eliminated. Those slots will instead go to an alternate list theoretically improving fairness for active PGA tour members. AS player advisory council member Adam Scott explained the pack discussions were based on guiding principles including our belief that PGA tour membership is the pinnacle of achievement in men’s professional golf. However, while these changes address external exemptions, the core sponsor privileges remain intact. Each signature event will still grant four sponsor exemptions for PGA Tour members only. One exemption for players with 80 plus PGA Tour wins. A rule designed specifically for Tiger Woods. One host exemption for player hosted events. That means players like Jordan Spe and Ricky Fowler. Fan favorites with deep sponsor ties will continue to enjoy the benefits of golf’s most controversial loophole even as debates over fairness grow louder. I in the end while the PGA tour strives to modernize and reward performance. It’s clear that popularity still carries enormous power and for speed that means his hiatus is as secure as ever.
