I Bought The NEW Amazon Basics Golf Balls – HOW BAD ARE THEY!?

For years and years, the Kirtland Costco golf ball has been the go-to ball for anyone wanting to save money. But that is now coming to an end with the release of the Amazon Basics ball. Chris, how you doing? Very good. You said Chris, we haven’t done a talking balls for absolutely months. There’s no Bobby today. No cameraman. He’s on holiday again. Can’t believe it or not. But look at these feeling balls. Now, I had no idea these were coming. I don’t know about you, but um they kind of broke the internet the other day, didn’t they? So, it’s really nice to to have a look at these. So, um these cost £17 a dozen or there’s a deal if you get two. If you get two, they’re a very similar price to the Kirkland. Now, they’re not a three-piece urethane ball. We are going to cut these open today and just see exactly what the differences are. I’m going to test them against, get ready for this. Oh, we’re going to test them against the number one ball in golf, the Titalist Pro V1. And we do have a full sleeve in there for anyone wondering exactly where that is. Um Chris, do you want to lead us away? I’ll lead us away. What your first impressions on it? Because tell it’s hard without Bob, is it? Because one of the things that I’ve heard on the internet already Oh, yeah. is how firm they feel. But actually Oh, no. I’ve heard the opposite. My friend, that feels really soft. I heard somebody say they was hitting a marshmallow. Really? Yeah, that’s what I heard. Right then. Um, so we’ll play first couple holes. We’ll really put it through its paces. We’re going to test these balls for numbers as well. So, make sure you stay tuned for that against the Pro V1. Uh, scramble like we always do. Scramble. Yes. Oh, I imagine that might be typical of the drives you’ll see for people buying this ball, but it’s a fairway hit. It did feel soft even though it was right off the bottom. You can do any better than that. 9° today. Feels like zero. They’re not wrong. Sh. Tell you what, that felt actually really good. It feel like a marshmallow. Look where that’s gone. Look at that. Oh, Bob’s not here. Bob’s not here to zoom, is he? But that great zoom. I am going to say I don’t think it’s gone very far, but I was really impressed with the launch. It launched nice and low. It released down there. Be interesting to see the spin rates, won’t it? Because if you can make I believe it’s a two-piece golf ball. If you can make a decent feeling two-piece golf ball for that price, who’s the winner? Everybody. Golf’s the winner. is always quite a nerve-wracking first t-shot here at Lindry because everyone in the pro shop watches you out the window and they’re all pissing themselves at that Chris. It’s a fairway hit though. It is a fairway hit. So I think the golf ball market is a very interesting thing at the moment because we have likes of Kirkland, we have seed of course we have vice tour edge new. I am surprised that they’ve gone with Are you surprised they’ve gone with the mega mega basic budget or do you think it’s just a case of if you’re kind of surfing on Amazon, you can of course get them next day with Amazon Prime like we did. Yeah. So, it’s like, oh, you know what? I’ve got a golf trip with the boys. I don’t really want to spend loads of money. I don’t want to lose loads of expensive balls. I’ll just use them. I think they’ve gone to the right market because end of the day, you’re not going to I don’t think many better golfers are going to purchase an Amazon golf ball. Stay tuned and find out if that hypothesis is true. So, one of the issues you might find if you do buy these golf balls on Amazon is that your partner can track your Amazon link and see she wasn’t happy, was she, with you? No. The only purchase I’ve made off Amazon all year, me life’s not been worth living. Heaven forbid. So, uh, first T-shot. I’m quite happy with that. Although, I do feel like usually we’re just sneaking past that bunker. When I saw the flight and saw how powerful it looked, I’m thinking, “Oh, it’s going to scoot past the bunker.” Uh, it’s not done. Tell you what, I’m going to chip a five, I think. Yeah, it’s See if we can flight it down a little bit. Work on this zoom for Bob. Well, it’s not flighted down. That’s just ballooned up a little bit. Actually, it felt really soft again, though. It sounded incredibly soft. Yeah, it did. I think I’m being too harsh with it there. It wasn’t that bad, actually. I didn’t think Left the face open a touch. It’s going to go higher, isn’t it? Yeah. It didn’t jump up too far. Oh, not the best start for us with those. It’s a pattern. Let’s see if we can salvage a par. Oh dear. Good news. We’re going to test them around the greens for short game. Right, two very interesting approach shots into this first hole. Now, I am going to say we’ve both missed that right and the wind is strong off left to right, which I didn’t really think too much about, but I think that has been affected quite a lot by I’m glad we’re not playing that one. Mine popped up. I do feel like it has been affected quite heavily by the wind there. So, certainly something to bear in mind being a two-piece ball as well. It It has got a really thin You’ll see this when we cut it open cuz I’ve seen it on a couple of Instagram pages. A really thin outer layer. So, a couple of wedge shots and there might be a goner. Watch it scuffed up. Yeah. Go on then. What a lovely shot. It did feel soft again. It does feel like you’re not hitting anything. Yeah, you’re hitting thin air. Like you’re hitting nothing at all. What’s that off bobble? Now that’s kept something bobbered now. Ned Flanders that from Simpsons. Oh, there you go. Can I try and play a spinny one, do you think? You test it out. You played more the bumper, didn’t you? With that tried them yet. No. Beautiful. Then put Gaz to the to the sword the other day. These soft as butter as well. I mean, it wasn’t exactly a low spinner. I wasn’t going for a low going for a high one, but it has come off incredibly soft. I do like how basic that is. That’s bas like a to box from Titus, isn’t it? Yeah. Nice and cheap. Keep the cost down. And they came in like a big uh just a cardboard box, I suppose. Did they? Yeah. They didn’t even have an actual This is prime location for some spinner, isn’t it? That felt really good. And that’s not spun at all. That’s the exact strike that I wanted there. You see a little bit of bit of nip afterwards. Interaction on the finely mound fringe here. So, I don’t think you’re going to be buying these. That’s another one for the spin. You know what? Three balls there felt quite different. The strikes felt quite similar. That’s perfect. It’s got a spin. had a bit. I’m not going to say it’s terrible, but I don’t think it’s fantastic. Right, then this for par. Not the start we wanted to be brutally honest. What are your thoughts on the alignment aid? A good thick alignment aid. It looks to me like the Callaway chrome soft. No, Callaway. Yeah, super soft. Super soft. That’s the one. I do like it. Oh, it’s a lovely roll. Stayed there. I like the alignment a good job. Just basic simple a thick line. Thanks for coming. I think it’s too thick. Must say with it being so soft as well, it probably would take some getting used to with the putter. I thought I’d left that short because it’s so soft. But the big thing that we generally discuss here on Talking Balls when we look at balls like this is how good do you have to be to buy an expensive ball? How consistent do you have to be? But also, should you just always use the same ball? An Amazon basics. Basic, right, Chris is going iron off this second hole. Let’s see. I I’ve still got the Kirkland in my pocket, and it’s amazing to see how the Kirkland’s a urethane cover, whereas this isn’t. There’s not really much information on it, but it’s certainly not urine, but it does still launch fairly low, so I’m interested to see. But you can see how pearly white the Amazon is compared to It doesn’t feel cheap either, does it? You know, like some of the cheaper balls that the cover feels it doesn’t. Yeah. See what happens with the distance though when we’ll do the section. We’re going to put the launch marker down on a couple of tea boxes and see how far they go. See how consistent they are. That’ll be really interesting to see. That sounded so good. See, that’s launched good for iron there. I am going to say it’s a little bit shorter than I’d expect though there. But it is a low compression ball. Yeah. So, is it going to go as far for me? Probably not. When did winter happen, by the way? I just looked at you there thinking, “Oh, this took a drastic turn.” A drastic turn. Should I go mini driver and try and get Yeah. See how far it gets down again. Was it just a loose swing on the first a loosener at the loosey goosey? I don’t mind that lower launch though. No, I think you can do that with it. It’s a good ball. That’s another good shot. Weird ball flight that it’s almost like dipping out the air, isn’t it? Yeah. Distance-wise, I’d say that’s good. Yeah, I think it’s absolutely fine. I think when we do look at the numbers, it’ll be really interesting to see just I think how consistent they are cuz I feel like I’ve hit the same T-shot twice there with this mini driver. I’m loving the mini drive at the minute, by the way. And I’ve had two very different results. I think it’s wind dependent. I think the wind’s battering this ball. Yeah, very strange ball fly that right. So, distance-wise, that’s actually done. Okay. Chris, it was a strange ball flight, though, wasn’t it? Yeah, it was very much dipping out, wasn’t it? So, how are you playing this shot now? Cuz we’re in the roof. We’re downwind off the left. We’re playing a ball that we know probably isn’t going to have that much spin, whereas I keep coming to I’m going to do a comparison with the Kirkland as well, cuz they end up being pretty much the same price. Yeah. How do you play this differently knowing you’re playing this basic ball? Uh, I’m still going to play it the same. Maybe just land it a little bit shorter. Try and play it lower, but whether it does no is the answer. Is it middle of the green? Came off really soft again, didn’t it? Yeah, it just popped up. So, I think this is that soft. I think my microphones aren’t going to pick up the strike on this, which will be very interesting to see for the shot tracer. I know you guys don’t care about that, but chippy knife. Yeah, and I would say it’s it feels fantastic. I do enjoy how soft it does feel. It doesn’t feel like you’ve hit anything. Although it’s short, so it’s not really helping me. Nice flights there. Tell you what. Oh. Oh, it’s lipped out. That has it. It was close. That was a delightful flight. It felt I’m going to put it out there. It’s one of the better feeling balls that we’ve tested. I I think it’s right up there. That I think performance we’ll see cuz again, it was a really weird flight, wasn’t it? Yeah. Yeah, it’s like it’s getting to the top of its flight and then dipping. But feelwise, absolutely fantastic. So, numbers wise, we hit a good couple of shots out here on the golf course using the golf song wave. What shot that is, by the way, that could go in. And as you can see, it was really interesting. We some really good shots with both the Amazon and with the Titus Pro V1, but it was so inconsistent. The Prov1 was getting good ball speeds, good spin rates, really consistent distances, as you would anticipate with the number one ball in golf, and of course, probably the most expensive ball in golf. When we look at these numbers, you’re going to have to take them with a pinch of salt because the ball speeds, the spin rates, everything was so sporadic with this Amazon ball. It was kind of difficult to put a number on it. I think you’d have to go and hit hundreds and hundreds of shots to work out actually how far it goes and how well it performs. But as you can see, Prov1’s going further, spinning more, more ball speed, and actually it launched a lot higher as well. So, you’re getting the best of all worlds. Obviously, there’s a huge price discrepancy with these balls, but realistically, I’m going to struggle to recommend this based on the irons because it was so inconsistent. Right, two very different shots into this green. I I do feel like I learned a lot from Chris’s, but I’m amazed to see how well that did for again such a a strange ball flight. I’m going to clip a few out this bunker and just see how good the case does save or react. I am surprised how soft they feel. Incredibly soft. Did that try and spin? Yeah. Plenty of spin on the second bounce. Like a delayed spin, wasn’t it? I must admit, I’m not struggling with distance control even out the bunker with them. I’ve really tried to spin that. Yeah. bloated. I think nothing wrong with them. They’ve like discolored, haven’t they? More than a scuff. That’s quite bad, actually. Right. See if you can lead us in for the bird, Christopher. And that’s an own ball bird with the Amazon Basics Coroft. I didn’t realize it was called the Corsoff. No, I didn’t to be honest. I thought it would basic basic. I’d have kept it basics. Would you? Right. This is where I’d be slightly worried with this ball because we’re into the wind and the wind’s slightly off left as well. How consistent can it be through that wind? There is quite a bit of breeze up there. I’ve gone sixiron. It’s playing 165. So, normally a six iron will be about a 180 club. So, you going to try and flight this down or just play it normally? I’m going to try and fight it down. I’ve not had much success at that yet. That’s a great ball for Yeah, that did. Oh, it’s short. Short. I hit that. I hit that. Well, so I was going to hit seven there. I’m going to hit five now. Yeah, it’s very It did seem to come down very quick that as well. So, really, we are clubbing up here because of the ball, aren’t we? Yeah, I think the wind is really But again, these golf balls are low compression. They’re not maybe designed for our speed. Great flight. That felt so good. I think that’s gone in the crap at the back. Has it? It’s on the green. That’s not the best camera work I’ve ever done. See if I can play another one and just cuz I feel like I flatted that down. Well, but could I get there with a seven? You like cuz it’s 165 is a seven number for me, isn’t it? And I think even with this wind, if I was playing just me and you. It’ just be a good seven. Do you think? I think we’ll be able to catch this halfway. Really? Breakfast on you if I get the green. I’ve struck it really good. Yeah, it’s coming back, isn’t it? I’ll tell you what, this Yeah, it’s shorting it. Yeah. So, when testing numbers with driver for this golf ball, it was a very similar stories to what we found with the 7i and I managed to get some decent drives out there and felt like I hit it pretty well. But then you can start to see how realistically it just wasn’t that consistent. I was hitting nice centered drives and I was looking at ball speeds and numbers which we’re going to have a look at in just a second. And some of them were up there in like the kind of high 150s. Some of them dropped into the really low 150s and even the spin rates just weren’t that consistent. So you can see here the Prov1 outperformed it by a good 5 mph and that as an average was very very consistent. The spin rate was mega consistent with the Prov1. However, the Amazon ball fluctuated from anywhere around 2,000 up to 3,000. So that average, take it with a pinch of salt. But then we went to test a couple of holes on Chris’s channel and this happened which was quite interesting for the price of the ball. I really I really got a club for this. Do you know what? I’m gonna go mini driver. Beauty about the ball is it’s cheap, isn’t it? It is. You don’t mind losing a ball potentially with one of these? I mean, the shot isn’t mini driver. It’s never been mini driver, has it? But if you take it over the corner slightly over, just draw it off. That’s fantastic line that. So, now we have to say, don’t we? because I wouldn’t have hit that shot with a prov or an expensive golf ball, but that’s like the perfect T- shot because I’m not scared about lo money’s money. I know we’re from Yorkshire, aren’t we? But has that directly impacted my scores more than say 200 RPM and three yards. Exactly. And in match play that could get you winning the hole. Right. I actually forgot to do this on the golf course and I’m just editing the video now and totally remembered that I forgot to do it. So, let’s cut this open and see just how good a quality it is. We know it’s two-piece golf ball. We’ll cut it straight down the Amazon smile as it were and see exactly what it’s like cuz it could This is the big thing here. So, the color doesn’t really mean anything. That’s just a batch of kind of rubber and plastic that we’ve used for it. But you can see just how thin that outer layer is. And that’s something which I have seen from a couple of people on Instagram. And that’s why it might kind of have that low dippy flight. but also potentially struggle with those bunker shots as we saw with potential for some uh rather bad damage. H okay, now let’s see if we can bird that final par three. There’s me here saying that the seven iron didn’t do bad. Um it didn’t even make the bunker. The five iron, however, is about 20 ft away. Still short of the flag, though. Yeah. Yeah, which is a concern. I thought it was in the crap at the back, but thankfully it’s not. see how quickly it stopped because that’ll be interesting. If you’re not getting a spin, you’re not getting the landing angle, what are you getting and how can it stop? However, what I will say is I’ve got another birdie putt for two in a row own bowlers with this bowl. Stopping wise, I know it’s into the wind and a five iron. What would you say there? That’s Yeah, two yards, yard and a half. It’s not the worst, is it? No. Two cups right to left. Good pace away she goes. Yeah. Correct. Mondo. The the laminate is really nice and blunt, isn’t it? Yeah, I think they’re doing a good job there. A lot of companies don’t spend time on that. Just firm. It’s a shame. It’s not a terrible put. Stayed out there, guys. That is one under par through three holes using this brand new Amazon Basics golf ball. I’m genuinely impressed by that. I do think numbers wise it struggles and I do think looking at consistency wise it struggles but feel-wise for the everyday golfer that isn’t really too worried about performance really more bothered about price it’s a decent option.

  1. Thanks for testing the Amazon basics. How about a bag of 'Lake' balls. Cheaper and recycling..

  2. I assume they were trying to create a Callaway Supersoft at a budget price. ⛳️
In the states, Kirkland are 24 balls for $35. Amazon basics are 24 for $24. And the Pro V1 comparison is just silly.

  3. 8 hcap happy to keep playing my Kirklands. 3 piece & urethane Vs Amazon 2 piece & ionomer.
Kirkland virtually a ProV1 just a few yards shorter with the long irons and woods.

  4. I don't usually disagree with Chris but I think if Amazon made a ball that actually played as well as a pro v1 with free shipping and an Amazon basics price it would be the number one ball in golf!

  5. Testing a ball in cold weather is not indicative of what the ball can do. But this is not a better golf ball from the start

  6. I play Pro V1s and then a Kirkland as a provisional ball because if I find my first ball and the Kirkland provisional cannot easily been seen, I move on. Strokes lost is more important than losing a ball. Of all the consumaballs (sic!) in any sport, golf balls are among the cheapest. Some golfers have this out of perspective.

  7. You did not do a spin test. I suspect one cause of the inconsistency is the centre of mass not being in the centre. I also do not trust the line on any ball for this reason and check the centre of mass myself.

  8. Sure you are not worried about hitting a ball into the woods, but I have the talent to hit 10 in a row before I stop and drop one in the fairway. I only hit one Prov1 before dropping one in the fairway. So losing Prov1s are less expensive for me.
