WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – Watertown City Council Candidate Anthony Velasquez says the city-owned golf course should have one year to turn a profit, or a new direction is needed.
Velasquez joined us for 7 After 6 on Thursday evening.
Velasquez says the budget, homelessness, and infrastructure are the top 3 issues he sees in the city.
He’s tired of seeing budgets proposed with double-digit tax rate increases. He says the city manager should be giving council a balanced budget, with necessary cuts made, then allowing council to decide what not to cut, rather than having to make the cuts itself.
As for the Thompson Park Golf Course, Velasquez says it needs to prove its worth.
“Give it one more year to determine its viability, to see if it breaks even. At that point, I would like to see it leased out or even closed,” said Velasquez.
Our entire interview with Velasquez was live-streamed on Thursday evening.
We spoke with each of the four candidates in the same format.
Join us live online again next Tuesday for a debate with all four candidates.
