Garrett Morrison breaks down Donald Ross’s subtle and interesting Hyannisport Club, famously known as President John F Kennedy’s summer retreat. The gentle terrain and beautiful coastal views makes this club a must see.

hyport Club on Cape Cod is probably best known as the summer Retreat of the Kennedy family but there’s a lot more to it than that the golf course which overlooks Nantucket Sound was established by three Giants of the early American game John Reed Alex Finley and Donald Ross Ross expanded the course to 18 holes in 1913 then revised his own design in 1930 his architecture here is subtle and low profile there are relatively few Fairway bunkers so the topography creates most of the Strategic interest off the tea the greens hug the ground and encourage running approaches and because of the firm Turf conditions and frequent winds hyport is one of the most lynxy Ros courses I’ve played one of my favorite aspects of the design is how the routing spaces out the highlights the property’s strongest asset is obviously the frontage on Halls Creek Estuary and the course interacts with it at several different points the stunning third and fourth holes plunge into the marsh the par 3 eighth hole plays across a big chunk of it the 10th and 15th offer wonderful views of it and the par 516th and Par 31 17th pay a final visit to the Estuary these are the most memorable holes on the course and Ross’s routing does a great job of sprinkling them throughout the round it’s sophisticated golf architecture that doesn’t call attention to itself kind of like hyen Port Club in general [Music]
