Something about Black Desert Resort just brings out the best in Matt McCarty.
The 27-year-old from Scottsdale won this event last year and he finds himself right back at the top of the leaderboard again in 2025. After signing for 1-under 70 on Thursday, McCarty got off to a blistering start in Friday’s second round with five birdies in his first six holes, including three straight on Nos. 13-15 (he started on the back nine).
As of 12:30 p.m. ET, McCarty is the solo leader at 7 under for the tournament, one shot clear of a four-way tie for second.
The first round of play is just finally wrapping up at the Bank of Utah Championship at almost 10 a.m. local time. The field of 120 couldn’t get around Black Desert Resort with the available sunlight, as the first round was suspended due to darkness a little after 6:47 p.m. local time (8:47 p.m. ET). A total of 38 golfers needed to finish their first rounds. One golfer, Lanto Griffin, withdrew.
On Thursday, several afternoon tee times were moved back 15 minutes due to pace-of-play issues.
Jesper Svensson fired a 6-under 65 on Thursday to get into a tie for the lead at the Bank of Utah Championship, and he’s in the afternoon wave on Friday. The key to Svensson’s success on Thursday? He kept the ball in play on a tricky course that throws black lava rock formations at players.
“It’s definitely one of these golf courses where essentially you could be stuck on the tee box. One bad swing is a re-tee immediately,” he said. “It felt good to keep her in the fairway. Yeah, like I said, hit a lot of greens, you’re going to have some good looks.”

Jason Day hasn’t been shy about switching clubs, using both cavity back and blade sets from multiple brands this season. But after two months off after failing to make the Tour Championship, Day is rocking Avoda irons, a boutique brand based in Pittsburgh that gained national attention when Bryson DeChambeau began using its irons last year, including when he won the U.S. Open.
