Bank of Utah Championship 2025, Round 1 | PGA Tour Highlights | Golf Channel
We’ve got sunny skies to kick off the opening round of the Bank of Utah Championship. No surprise this part of the country. They get more than 300 days of sunshine. On the map, you find Black Desert Resort in southern Utah. One of the most visually impressive courses you will see in the Beehive State. George Sabarakas Johnson Wagner taking a spin through the early highlights. Torbjorn. Oh, listen. On the third coming into the week, 116th in the FedEx Cup fall. So, all these guys we’re seeing here, they’re outside the top 100. They need to get a move going. All part of a six under 65. Yesper Spencson had it working as well on 17. Such an incredible young talent. Waiting for him to really break out on the PJ tour. He too outside of the top 100. He’s 115th in the FedEx Cup. Former world number one Jason Day watched this event on TV from home a year ago said I want to come here check it out and tee it up. And he was doing some work here on the fourth from deep. David Lipsky one of the bubble boys. You mentioned Johnson for Eagle. Yeah, he’s 99th on the FedEx Cup fall coming in. So, no time to hang on to your position. Got to go out there and take it like he is right now. A six under 65. He’s a co-leader. Paul Peterson. What a magical finish he had on the back nine. He certainly did. Had a chance to win earlier this summer, too, in Louisville at the Iceco Championship. Check this out, George. 22 32 five under in a four-hole stretch. Was over par through 11 holes. Went six under his final seven. All part of a five under 66. So he has won off the pace. Some of the other good rounds, Cameron Champ, no surprise, the long-hitting Cameron Champ, threetime PGA Tour winner with a five under 66. The birdies are out there. Round one, the Bank of Utah Championship. As we head on up to the ninth hole, three parfs on this golf course. Frankie Sappin coming in with his third, forced to lay up. Guy of his length, you got to take advantage of it. And he certainly will with that beautiful approach. Frankie Sap and Pepper in the pin there. Tournament environment. One of the sponsor invites this week with the BYU connection. Carson Lindell. This on the 18th, the par five just a moment ago. Oh, how good is that? The Eagle flips around his scorecard from one over to one under. Spin it to the backside. Patrick Rogers also a couple under on the day. And this for birdie Rogers filling it up. One under through two. This his second shot to the 12th. Impressive young player. Played at Wake Forest. Got a lot of potential. He’ll be out on the cornfair tour next year. Getting a spot start on the PGA tour this week. Out flagging it. And David Sport another PGA Tour U number one for birdies. His last five holes. He’s at three under par. His final hole of the day. Athletic young player. It’s amazing watching the talent come out of this PGA Tour U. And how much success they’re having so so early. College is really preparing them a lot different than it used to. From one lefty to another. Ford. It’s been on a birdie run. Putting right back up the hill and get aggressive with it. Ford feeling it. Wow. Tumi Kaya in the fairway on the 12th. Whole location down in the little bowl to the left. You can really use the back stop if you choose, but didn’t need to. Up on 16. Taylor Moore off the green. Bump and run. Oh, what touch? Oh, come on. [Applause] More somehow walking it off with a birdie. Third shot for back at seven. He’s got plenty of green to work with here up the slope. touch. That was classy by approach shot for Brennan. Middle right hole location. Ball hanging on him a little bit. Going to hard to going to be hard to keep it over on that right side of the green or not. He’s been dialed in with his iron play. Max down the hill here again. I think he’s just got to drip this in the front edge, but not much movement in it. Well, these guys kind of laid back a little further than the group in front and they all made birdie. We only had the one birdie in the group in front, so they knew what they were doing. At eight, we find Tom Hogi on the 16th for birdie. Got to like this golf course for him, too. Just drives it unbelievably straight. Hogi couple under par. Yeah, forced the layup here. 134 back under the breeze. Good looking line. The whole location is just on that front portion. Yeah. Coming back up the hill. Not much movement in this putt. Center cut. Kevin Stillman at four under this for birdie on seven to get to five. Just nobody making it from back here [Applause] until Kevin Strman. Wow. Five birdies his first seven holes. He’s just one off the lead. Okay, Brennan in the bunker this on 16. Appears to be on a bit of an ups slope into the wind. Tough to fly it all the way there. This guy’s nails. This is a nice low ball flight. He’s got to get up a little bit. Perfectly placed under the hole. Putting uphill into the wind. Easy. Wow. Well, that’s a nice turnaround that coming off that three putt on the eighth. He made the great par out of the out of the lava on nine and bam getting another birdie there here at 10. Once again clocking in at the 17th. Couple over par. Luke Clanton so far. Love how quickly he gets through impact. Body turns beautifully through the ball. And look at these two shots. The par 37th Tom Weissoff’s homage to the postage stamp. And there’s some nasty spots to miss it around this green. Long and left is is severe runoffs. Cana flagging him that Max is probably going to get from the lie. [Applause] Oh, beautiful. Love that. That’s a crowd-pleaser when you get those two, three hops and then this catch and spin. Ouch. Wow. That was a bit dirty that, wasn’t it? Austin Cook to get on the first page of the leaderboard. Uphill slightly right to left. Really good spot to putt from Nice catch by the hole. He’s at five under par. Hasn’t had to do this much today. Homer scrambling from off the green on 12. This is very doable though, guys. Just a chip and run and then runs out like a putt. That was just a moment ago. Two for two. Should be three for three. He’s been perfect. Headed over to the backside. Cool. Saw off finish playing back into the wind trying to control that ball from spinning back. That to get to six. Austin Cook to make it four. tied for the lead at six under. What a birdie. Catching some edges of some holes. They’re lipping in for him. Not lipping out. Doug Gim on the box at the 15th. No. Get lucky. Sounded like it was a little bit out to the right. Oh, get lucky. Go. Wow. Matsyama head fake out of Doug G. Maybe he’s saying get lucky. Get in for a hole in one. Water definitely can come in play if you’re not careful. You are so He’s looking at it cautiously. Oh, how you want it, man? The miss you can’t have up on 18. Tumi Kanaya lying two here. Running it up for his third. That’ll work. Making quick work of the back nine. Home’s bogey putt. This has got a pretty big break on it. Definitely a couple of feet left to right up the first half and then it flattens out the last 8 ft or so. Still, I mean, really nice putt, but walking off with a double. That’s just what you’re trying to avoid on this golf in this golf tournament here at Black Desert. If you can avoid double bogeies, you’re going to have yourself a chance to win on Sunday. And that and Max obviously unable to do that here at the 13th. One loose swing 13th. See if Billy Horchel can turn things around. Made quad on the 11th, but it could be an eagle on the 14th. Horchel for Eagle. Oh, sneaks it in. Well, the roller coaster continues for Billy Horsel today. We’ve got we’ve got doubles, we’ve got quads, we’ve got birdies, and we’ve got eagles on the PGA Tour. Something Max Holm has been able to do six times. And this is looking on a great line. Look at bounce back from that double quickly. Johnson, your big takeaways from the opening round here at the Bank of Utah Championship. I mean, I’m in love with this golf course in this area. I think the beauty of of the the greater Zion area is just unbelievable. But, uh, you know, we’re seeing some good golf. Excited to see Olison. We’re seeing guys outside that top 100 trying to make a push.
