Beginner here. Starting to get the hang of my irons but struggling with OTT.
Practice swings feel much better, especially when I can see myself (in the camera) but as soon as I’m over the ball I can’t stop coming over the top.
Am I actually coming over the top in this video? Does it really matter? Will this affect me in the future with trying to push yardage or should I try to sort this now?
Any tips or techniques that will work to fix?
Cheers

Your main issue here could be tempo – your backswing feels a bit quick compared to your downswing. That quick tempo can push the club outside the ideal path as you start down, which often shows up as an outside-to-inside move. Yes, you may be showing a bit of that in your video, and it matters because it can limit distance and consistency. Tip 1: slow the backswing a touch and pause for a heartbeat at the top, then push through with a smooth turn. Tip 2: start the downswing with your hips turning toward the target and keep the hands relaxed so the club drops inside.

You don’t have separation between your legs and torso, so when you start your lower body rotation it’s dragging your upper body around with it. When you start to shift your weight you want to almost leave your upper body behind a little bit and move your hand down before you let the rotation of your lower body start to rotate your upper body.

  3. Stand a little further from the ball give yourself some space
Also that right hand looks super strong

Despite what the bot says, the main issue here is not tempo. The issue starts with setup. Look at how Morikawa is set up and then look at how close your hands are to your body. You shouldn’t be tucking your hands in because that will also give you very little space for your hands to clear your body on your down swing. This should immediately help your OTT
The other issue you have is you’re not letting your arms fall down on your down swing, rather you’re moving your arms horizontally through the swing which causes issues like casting and generally being inconsistent.

the bot did give a good tip thought “Tip 2: start the downswing with your hips turning toward the target and keep the hands relaxed so the club drops inside.”

Save yourself 20 years of frustration. Take up a different sport/s

You look like your club is attached to your dick. Step a bit further away from the ball. You have no choice but to come OTT because you don’t have enough space to come from the inside. I always recommend beginners to start out trying to hit from inside out because I think it develops important swing mechanics. Most notably that swing path encourages hitting out on the ball and learning to both close the face and release the club. Hitting out on the ball almost always is an increase in yardage.

First thing you have to do is to step farther away from the ball and put less weight in your heels. From there, start working on a shallowing motion and try to hit the inside of the ball. It’s a bit unintuitive to learn, so I’d personally recommend to get a few lessons to kind of get you started. There are some drills that can help, just remember that your left arm is 100x as important in the swing as your right arm.

You are way too close to the ball back up

Hold your back to the target while shifting weight forward and then rotating in the downswing. Your lower body will pull your shoulders through. Right now you’re spinning your shoulders and your arms will go out from the top every time. You want your arms to go out at the bottom of the arc which they will just do naturally if you delay the shoulder rotation a second or two (but you don’t really need to time it if your weigh shift is correct, it will just happen naturally).

Might be nothing, but it looks to me like you might be a bit too close to the ball. Back up 2-3 inches from the ball.

    Grip needs work

You also need arm rotation on the way back, and then the counter rotation on the way down.

You’re not rotating the club properly around you and your grip looks really strong to make up for that.

You can’t move anything properly in this situation.

Watch some videos for a good grip, there’s plenty. Once that happens you’ll hit the ball right a lot, until you learn to start turning the forearms before you hit the ball.

Easy fix, just requires some work.

You you don’t have a slight pause at the top it’s extremely easy to come ott

Grip the club with your left normally and then put your right hand under the grip and place it on the back of your left hand. You should feel like your right elbow is pinned to your body more. Then hit some practice shots like that (dont hit hard). Should help you groove the feel. Your practice swing is good though.

There’s a drill where you set up with your ass just away from a wall and then you do your backswing. Pause and then your downswing should start with the club touching the wall and then you drop your hands.

  14. AlternativeLack1954

Try swinging like your practice swing. Notice how different the two are in the video.

  15. Hodgeman19

When you get to the top of your swing you immediately push your club head forward before you come down. Keep your elbow tucked to your side and envision coming down in the same plane that you came up on

  16. Slambridge

Try starting the downswing by pointing your right knee toward the target.

  17. FancyyPelosi

I don’t understand why people’s swings change so dramatically between practice and hitting the ball. In your practice swing you’re just swinging naturally and it looks fine. The you try and hit the ball and it looks like a total abomination. Just do what you’re doing with your practice swing.

  18. bennyz321

Stop using your right arm so much. Lead with your left

  19. SmashleyBallz

in an attempt to generate power you are getting out of sequence. as the down swing starts you initiate with shoulder turn. the sequence should be hands drop then rotation. basically you are spinning out.

You’re adjusting because your take away is off, you’re doing a kinda loop in your top swing to get it back and that’s why you’re over the top.. proper take away should fix a lot of it.. but as a beginner it’s a lot easier said than done.. might find watching yourself do takeaways in a mirror helps, helped me.. and practice slow swings.. if you can’t do your swing in slow motion you won’t do it fast

Also, you tense up like crazy. Hit the ball with same effort and prep as your practice swing. Don’t think about hitting the ball but making a good swing.

  22. Low-Raise-9230

Practice with your feet together. You’ll relearn how to rotate better and swing around your core instead of chopping up and down.

In addition to all the comments about hands, what worked for me is put a stick or club at a nearly 45 degree in to out angle in front of you (beyond the ball). Feel like the clubhead moves along that path during the swing. This forces the in to out feel. You will then likely need to work on face control as OTT promotes wide open face
