A shot that tons of people struggle with, and maybe you do too, is that midcourt floaty high ball that you should really be killing. And if you’re a player that hits with top spin, then this tip should really help. When hitting a normal top spin forehand, you may have heard of the clock face analogy. Your racket path should travel from 6:00 to 12:00 up the back of the ball. However, if you try to hit your normal top spin forehand from this point here, you can see it’s very, very awkward. Think of the forehand swing path that you have when you’re hitting with top spin. It travels in this arc shape here. You’re still going to make that arc shape, but rather than making contact with the ball at the low point here, you’re actually going to meet the ball slightly later in the arc, somewhere around here, which means that instead of hitting from 6:00 to 12:00, you’re actually going to be hitting somewhere around 4:00 to 10:00 across the ball. It’s going to look more like this. This is going to still impart top spin onto your shot, but it’s really going to help to flatten it out slightly, helping you to penetrate the court as instead of going up the ball, you’re coming more across the ball. So, next time you get that slow, high mid-court ball that you want to put away, don’t be afraid of ripping it, but make sure that you rip across the ball instead of up the ball. Enjoy.

  1. It also imparts some side spin that allows the ball to curve back towards the center of the court making it a high-percentage shot.

  2. What happens when you get a high bouncing ball hit with backspin, so it just sits there, and you try to hit it with topspin but get a really thin contact on the ball and it goes in the net? This can happen when it's not a short ball, it can be a deep defensive shot from your opponent. Does the same tip apply as with the short ball here?

  3. What if the ball is short but low and you have a very short window to hit it? (Maybe I should just exercise more so i can get there sooner 💀)

  4. lol this is so bad. yea you will execute it, just you loose all the power. you better change the raket motion instead comming from below you go sideways or even up to down, you can still apply top sping tough, but usually its better to flatten it out.
the entire point of top sping is to hit it safer from relative low position without sacrifice speed. you dont have that problem on this strikes

  5. Get a 8lb or 6lb medicine ball!! and do slow rotational movement before ur tennis match!! Do hip strech without pushing ur body !! it should be relaxing strech! Pick a string which has lower launching angle like HyperG or any string which has review for low lauching angle! these three combination allow to put away shot ball with ease!!

  6. It’s easier to coach it as a high to high swing. Instead of the low to high on normal ground strokes.
