Utah Championship Course Breakdown: Navigating the Black Desert Resort

This is just the second year of this event. This Black Desert Resort in Utah has really put on a blitz of trying to get professional golf tournaments. They opened this resort, boy, within the last 5 years. It’s very, very new. The golf course I think just opened two or three years ago. They’ve had at least one or two LPGA events, maybe three at this point. Um, I think they’ve had a senior tour event. They are really working hard to get professional golf at this resort. From what I understand, it’s beautiful. I have not been there. I’ve been to Southern Utah a bit, but have not been to this resort. Would love to check it out at some point. So, we’re starting to see it more and more, but this is still only the second edition of the PGA Tour coming here for that kind of useful information. So, we’re not going to be able to run a regression model because it would just basically show you the exact results from last year. Wouldn’t be all that interesting. But I’ve got the scorecard here. And I went back and looked at um some of the the footage, some of the broadcast, and tried to remember everything that was going on here. And here’s what I noticed. So, first off, it’s a par 71, 36, 35 on the on the front and the back. Um parfs on both nine and 18. So, no matter what where you start, you’re closing on a par five. The front nine has that kind of getable stretch of the par five seventh, the short par 3 eighth, and the par five ninth. That’s potentially an opportunity for a little bit of a birdie streak, but there’s there’s not a lot of um it’s not your typical resort course or at least they changed the par. I don’t know what they play this as if I if I were to go play this or you and I were to go play this, but um you know, you’ve got a couple of par fours that are over 500 yards. The thing that stands out to me and and this is what I remember from last year is, you know, these fairways are 30 yards wide on average. Um, which is by resort standards pretty narrow. You know, you you start talking about other resort courses where you can get 50 yards wide. You do get some pretty easy rough. I mean, 2 in of Kentucky bluegrass not going to cause many issues, especially this time of year in southern Utah. Uh, so you get a little bit of a buffer there, but then there’s this moment where it flips from rough to lava rock basically, right? I mean, if you if you ever been to southern Utah, it’s basically being on Mars. I mean, it’s just some unbelievable landscape they have out there. This is the Black Desert, right? This is what they’re referring to. All these all these rock lava rock around this golf course. So, you can be effectively wild. uh you just can’t spray it, you know what I mean? You’re going to get some decent landing zones. It’s not your classic resort golf course. Um you have to be a little bit accurate, which is what Matt McCarti did in route to his uh victory last year. Matt McCarti, you know, at the time was was a courtfair tour player. We didn’t know a ton about him. Um you know, he was known for hitting fairways, hitting greens, not being very long off the tea, and then making enough putts. That’s exactly what he did at Black Desert. So, you’ve got to be a little bit careful off the tea here. Just because you see this might be a resort course in the fall of the PJ tour schedule. I don’t think it is necessarily bombing gouge. There’s going to be a point where um being uh being very inaccurate is going to be costly here off the tape. So, we’ll keep that in mind as we go through this field, as we look at the salaries, as we look at the pricing and all that fun stuff. But, uh, that is what I remember from last year. They’re they’re pretty pretty big greens, 7,000 square ft on average. Not too worried about that. They’ve added a couple of fairway bunkers. It is playing 50 yards longer, so couple new T’s that have been added um, since last year. So, it is playing a little bit longer than it was last year. I think the winning score last year was 22 23 under par. Yeah, feels about right. Something something like that, right? Probably 20 21 uh, gives you a really good chance of winning this golf tournament.
