The UBCO Heat men’s golf team won their second consecutive Canada West Championship on Tuesday afternoon as they overcame a three-shot deficit in the second round to win gold at the Chilliwack Golf Club.

Entering the second round at 10-under par, the Heat brought their game to a new level, combining to fire two eagles, 21 birdies and just six bogeys to shoot 19-under par 269 and hold off the UBC Thunderbirds. The Heat finished the day at 29-under par 547, two shots ahead of the Thunderbirds who won silver at 27-under par 549.

The Manitoba Bisons took home bronze at 21-under par 555.

“The players played unbelievable. I mean 19-under-par in one day is a school record for us. Just extremely proud of the guys to show what they’re capable of doing,” said UBCO head coach Clay Stothers, who was also named the conference’s men’s golf coach of the year. “It’s a belief system that the players have within the program, within our school and what we’re trying to do. It’s just great to see the kids get rewarded for all the hard work that they’ve put in.”

Last year’s Canada West individual champion Ryan Gillis once again led the way for the Heat at this year’s event. The third-year shot an impressive final round of six-under par 66 to finish in a tie for second place, ultimately taking home the individual bronze medal at nine-under par 135. He also earned a nod as a Canada West First Team All-Star for the second straight year.

Teammate Andrew Rouble leapt up the leaderboard in the second round, shooting the second-best round of the week at seven-under par 65 to finish tied fourth. That was good enough to be named a Canada West Second Team All-Star

Rouble was joined on that team by Chris Jo who tied for eighth place at six-under par 138 to earn his second-straight Canada West Second Team All-Star recognition.

Rookie Oakley Mayner was steady over the two days, finishing at three-under par 141 while Ryan Vest responded after a tough opening round to shoot four-under par 68 on the final day to finish tied for 17th at one-under par 143.

The Heat will compete in one final event in the fall term before breaking until the spring. They are set to travel to Arizona to play in the Firestorm Fall Invitational, set for November 3 to 5 at the Verrado Golf Club.

The UBCO Heat women’s golf team won their third consecutive silver medal at the Canada West Championships on Tuesday afternoon following a highly-competitive two rounds at the Chilliwack Golf Club.

The Heat, featuring Julia Alexander-Carew, Lauren Nedo, Bess Chan, Shinyao Zhang and Kiana Chen, combined to shoot one-under par 431, the best-ever score the team has posted at a conference championship.

The result left them six shots behind the UBC Thunderbirds, who fired a two-day total of seven-under par 425 to claim their sixth-consecutive Canada West title.

Victoria finished third at 27-over par 459.

Despite not winning gold, UBCO closed the gap on the team that has dominated university women’s golf for the last decade. After finishing 34 shots behind the Thunderbirds last year, the Heat improved that number to just six this year as they continue to search for their ultimate goal of a conference or national championship.

Alexander-Carew led the way for the Heat in the event as she finished in second place on the individual leaderboard to claim the individual silver medal, shooting two-under par 142.

After an ever-par 72 first round, Alexander-Carew fired four birdies to just two bogeys on Tuesday to earn her way onto the podium, earning her first-ever Canada West individual medal. Her performance also earned her a nod as a Canada West First Team All-Star.

Nedo joined her as a first team all-star as she finished in fourth place at one-over par 145. The fifth-year had four birdies, a bogey and two double bogeys in her final round.

For the second straight year, Chan was named a Canada West Second Team All-Star after she finished tied for sixth at three-over par 147. The fourth-year had four birdies and six bogeys in a steady second round performance.

Rookies Zhang and Chen finished in a tie for eighth place as they produced impressive showings in their first-ever conference championship. Both shot four-over par 148 for the event.

The Heat will compete in one final event in the fall term before breaking until the spring. They are set to travel to Arizona to play in the Firestorm Fall Invitational, set for November 3 to 5 at the Verrado Golf Club.
