Today I’m challenging LPGA Tour professional Lily He and pro golfer/YouTube golfer Marissa Winsler to an 18hole match. I mean, these two girls alone could beat me straight up from my tease. On the front nine, I’m going to be playing Lily and on the back nine, I’m going to be playing Marissa Winsler. Let’s see who takes it up. What is happening today? That is insane. Dude, this is crazy. This is part two almost. I did this one other time with Marissa and Alexis. Had probably the round of my not life, but one of the better rounds that I’ve had on camera. So, I’m hoping to do the same thing. I’ve actually never played this course. Shout out to uh Omni Barton Creek for having us out. We are playing the Fazio Foothills course. Good luck, ladies. Good luck. Yeah, good luck. Let’s go. Kind of nervous, guys. I got to lose the first hole rider. That’s the key. That’s a bad sign. Not a good start then. Yeah, that’s a bad sign. I feel like it’s unfair because they drive it so far. Well, also they he has a rhythm the whole time, you know? Like you could be going crazy. Yeah. And then all of a sudden you’re like, “Okay, I’m done.” And then I have to hop in. That’s so true. Which TE’s are you guys playing today? The blue. Have we made our decision? Yes. We’re going to play the blue. 6300. Perfect. So, the ladies are playing the blue TE’s today. 6300. I’m playing. Dude, I’m actually really excited for this video. It’s been a while since I filmed like a competitive match. I’m playing 7,000. They’re playing 6,300. I need all the advantage I can get. I mean, these two girls alone could beat me straight up from my TE’s. I feel like Garrett has an advantage cuz he’s played here before, right? I don’t think he has. He said he didn’t. I don’t drive it very far, but straight. Now I know what I’m up against today. Well done. I never doubted that. Welcome. This is our first time meeting. This So Lily and I have never met before, but you know, she’s LPGA queen. Like she’s on the big leagues. My time was spent on the Epson tour for for a year. And No, but the Epson tour levels are so good nowadays. It it is like it’s actually getting a lot more closer in in talent. I know a lot of girls that have played LPGA and then they actually had to go back down to Epson because maybe they didn’t play as well. So it’s like it’s so tough because it’s not easy. Yeah, it’s not easy. Like people don’t realize how good the levels are women. No, they don’t. They don’t. Dude, so I got this eye twitch going. Like nobody freaked me out in the comments cuz I’m a hypochondric or whatever, but my eyes like little. Dude, that coffee has me moving a million miles an hour. Marissa. Uh-oh. Kind of crazy. I actually don’t drink coffee before I play. You don’t? No. Is that your superstition? It’s not. I just get super jittery to the point where you can’t swing. I get like the putting yips. Did you find it out the hard way though? Like did you have coffee? For the longest time I thought like why would I get so nervous every time I go up to the green and every time I will putt. It was actually Nelly who said like I don’t drink coffee before I play. I was like oh how come? She was like well I can’t stop shaking. And I’m like oh wow that makes sense. It does kind of make sense. I actually will say cuz when I used to play tournaments I had to quit drinking coffee. Shot 10 over on the front nine. Ate a bunch of food, drank a bunch of water. All the jitters went away. One under on the back. No, it’s all right. Do we get to redo in YouTube golf? No, it’s fine. Easy up and down. I’m going to come get some tacos from you. 137. I don’t think I can get a This is like worst case scenario, but again, I got to lose the first hole anyway. So, I don’t like this yardage. We’re going to try and bunt a pitching wedge down there. Not bad, but those are those inbetweener shots, guys, that I’ve really been trying to dial in. We’re getting a little bit better at it. You got to take advantage. That’s going to be the worst iron she hits all day, I think. 100%. I know. Like this hole I have to win, dude. I have to like you have to win but you also have to lose. Yeah, it’s a weird one. If I had to explain Garrett’s game, honestly, no. He’s a good player. I just sometimes he can like go insane and then other times it’s just not there, you know? But that’s golf, isn’t it? Well, it’s kind of wet right now. And what people don’t know about chipping in wet grass is this slides a lot on the face and it can often like come up really short or the spins really weird. So, I just always make sure to drive off my club. Whoa. It came off really hot. Came out hot. It’s all right. That is so bad. I need to take advantage of this, guys. Absolutely need this. I I know I’m not going to be having opportunities like this today. You don’t need to do anything. No, I do. I have to take advantage of it if I want a chance at this match. This would If we make this, we go one up. It’s a pretty straight putt. Not much in it. Actually moved left if anything. Interesting. I’m just like a cool caddy today. Yeah, you’re kind of killing it. I start to like overthink and overread everything. Especially if you have some coffee in your system. No, when I have coffee, I’m like, I have to go because the more I stall, the more I shake. Just like go go go. I feel like I should have given that to you. This is a bad sign. Winning the first hole for me, guys. You know, by win the first hole, normally things go south very quickly. I did a video once with Alexa Pano. She’s a LPGA player, really good player. And it was just so funny cuz she was even saying like YouTube golf it’s so much harder. She’s like it’s weird having to talk through what you’re doing out loud. Like that was the hardest part for her. I remember her saying and I even felt weird about it when I first started YouTube. When I play competitively, I’m so in my own head. Like I’m having conversations with myself and thinking through like my shots and where I am mentally. And just on that first hole alone, I shot the hole and I started having a conversation and I completely forgot about the number what you were doing. Yeah. Would you say that’s the strength of your game? Driving accuracy? Yeah, I would say so. I mean, it helps a lot when you don’t drive it far. I was saying I hit it probably toward average, but I tend to be pretty like consistent, like accurate off of the tea. Yeah, which helps a lot. You just have to like pick and choose your courses and which tournaments you play because you just know like the courses where you can miss big and that’s really far probably won’t be the course where you’ll do well, right? Yeah. It just kind of sucks. That’s interesting. I’d be the opposite. I’d be like, give me the widest course possible. Yeah, I feel like most guys are. Yeah. Yeah, probably. Oh, guys, these videos are so fun. I just like having new people on the channel. Like Lily, she’s never really done a YouTube video. Uh before this I was kind of asking her. So uh it it’s definitely going to be an impressive watch today. She had a great ball here on hole number two. I hit like I said not the best. Unfortunately I’m going to be I said 170 and I have 170. So it’s going to be a nice full nine here. The goal is to play smart today in match play. This is maybe contrary to popular belief, but I was always taught by my first coach, play for pars and match play. Let your opponent make mistakes when they’re playing stupid, going for pens. Sure, if they get lucky and they make a bunch of birdies and they beat you, that’s fine. At least you didn’t lose the match. You know, play smart and hope you make some putts. The difference between the male and the female game, like here’s my thing. So, I where I live, I’m in Ohio and my golf course at home, like the rough is really thick. So honestly, if you’re not driving the ball well, you’re going to have a really hard time around that golf course. And they always like the guys I’ll play with will always be like, “Oh, you can play one tee up from us.” And I’m like, “You guys don’t get it because we’re going to have the same distance into the hole.” But like, let’s just say I like misit it a little bit. Like I’m trying to hit a five iron out of the thick rough. Yeah. You’re hitting a 9 iron out of the thick rough. You can already get it out of the rough no problem. It’s very interesting like how how different it is and like you can just tell with like guys can hit some insane golf shots. Oh, too much draw. Was kind of worried about that. That’s where you can’t miss it. Okay. No, you’re okay. That’s fine over there. I just gave this whole speech to the camera saying how in match play, you got to play smart. play to the center of the greens and I missed it in the one spot you can’t. Unfortunate. Okay, 102. This is a good yardage for me. A little uphill. So, I’m thinking it’s probably playing about 108. I’m going to go just a touch Whoops. Just touch right of the pin. Oh, be so good. That looks great. Nice. Nice shot. It took a really firm bounce. Well done. Let me fill the divots. Let me be a caddy that I’m supposed to be. Thank you. I knew it. I literally knew it on that first. I mean, Ryder said it. It’s going to be like the worst shot she hits all day. She’s already settled in that. I feel like I’m going to have to really get used to seeing shots like this just right at the pin every single time down the middle of the fairway. That’s when match play becomes super exhausting. Again, that’s why I’m very happy I won the first hole. I feel like I needed that cushion. Hopefully I can have some confidence in my game. Quit talking negative about myself and just freaking chip this in. Do a little freaking chip in. Fun fact, I feel like I never really take any divots unless it’s like a wedge. Yeah. Really? Okay, that’s fair cuz I do not take divots with like five irons. And if I do, it’s cuz I chunked it, you know. Oh, no. It’s a bit long. Ah, that’s fine. It didn’t really spin back. It see They seem firm, I will say. Yeah. So, we definitely are going to need to chip this close or in. She at worst is probably making par. Chipping has been well below average recently. Exactly. Guys, I don’t think I really wanted to hit that putt. If you have the same length putt and someone offers good, a normal rule of thumb is always accepted. One time against Luke Quan, we were playing one of our Saturday matches. I offered him good good and he said no. He missed his putt. I made mine. So, ever since then, if somebody offers me good good and it’s around the same length, always take it. I got a pitching wedge. Another one of those shots like on the last hole where I probably need to draw it into this pin. I’ve been playing a fade. So, see if it works. I think this is nice and full wedge. Go. It’s a good shot. One back. I was worried about that. See, we don’t have that issue with like seven irons or whatever. He’s hitting. What’s your hit? Pitching wedge. Oh, why? I guess seven iron. I was like, “Oh, we don’t have we can’t generate that much spin with the seven iron.” She’s like, “Yeah, we don’t have that problem.” Pitching wedge. What the heck? Oh my gosh, guys. I knew I was going to have to hit that one pretty good to get it there. It was just one of those in between shots that unfortunately I’ve had a lot of in between numbers today, but 130. That’s the one thing I’ve noticed about almost every single pro that I’ve played with is their distance control is their biggest strength. Like it’s very rare that you see a pro leave one way short or way long. Like for example where I just hit my ball. Like most pros won’t do that. Like if anything they might miss it a little bit offline. I just find that so impressive. Sorry, I’m glaz chat. No, I’m actually glazing. I got to chill. I’m so hard on myself. Like as golfers, as like professional golfers, we’re so hard on ourselves. Like paying that shot, I’m like I drew it too much. Oh, it’s too much club. I know. But it’s probably pin high and we’re fine. I am probably like 15 ft. But I know what you mean. I guess I could lead into that question. Like how was it growing up for you with golf? Like when did you start? And did you have parents? Like did they push you or like is that where you think you are like hard on yourself or was it just kind of like in your own nature or a little bit of both? So I’m Chinese and I grew up with like your typical tiger Asian parents. I feel like people might not actually know this about me, but I grew up with a pretty strict childhood. Meaning, you know, golf was like the most important thing in my life. I think on and off starting from the age of six, I stopped going to school like full-time and it was just golf. So, at the age of like seven, I would practice for like anywhere from like six to eight hours a day. Yeah. Like couldn’t have been easy for a young for a young child. But that’s how a lot of a lot of us grew up, especially in Asia. But yeah, I mean it was kind of like that up until high school. Yeah. And then my parents like became a lot more chill. But also then we had already moved to America by that time. You know, having tough parents didn’t make it easy on me, but it made me become like very tough on myself. like setting really high expectations on myself and things like that, which in golf is just so hard. It’s such a frustrating sport. It’s a sport where just because you work hard doesn’t mean you’re going to see results, like especially not right away. Yeah. So, yeah. Dang. No, but I think in Asia, especially Korea, but like they have this template of the swing. Uhhuh. And everyone learns after the same template versus I find in America a lot of the junior golfers are taught just swing just swing the way you want to swing. Swing your swing. Exactly. And but in China it’s the complete opposite. In Asia like you got to fit the mold and there’s a standardized swing too. You know David Le. So interesting. Yes. So he had what what was called the A swing. Yes. So all of our swings were modeled pretty much after the A swing. That’s actually a part of the problem I feel like. So nowadays, like a lot of the younger kids are starting golf and being told you got to generate club head speed. So just swing as fast as you can and then we can fix the swing playing later on versus it was the complete opposite for us like growing up. But kids nowadays like even if they’re the same height or the same size as me, they tend to be able to generate so much more club head speed, which is great, but like we were never taught that growing up. It was all about how can you have a good-look swing and how can you hit a straight. It was never about like consistently had it over and over. Exactly. That is so interesting. Dude, guys, this might actually be one of the tightest holes I’ve ever seen. Hybrid or driver? Driver. Hybrid. Just got to go with the opposite of what Ryder says. Typically, it works, but we’ll see. I feel like you win a lot of matches if you do that. I actually got to I can hit a straight shot now. It’s a choke up nine full swing. This ball should go left off this slope. It did spin off the back. Short, huh? I think that must have been more of a full swing than I thought it was. What a horrible kick. Like what did you hit? I think the sprinkler. You had to have because that was terrible. I was like, “Oh, that should be fine.” And all of a sudden it kicks straight left. It’s actually a pretty flat bunker, but of course I have a really weird and awkward stance. I’m going to take a little bit longer of a club. It’s just cuz I feel like my stance is so weird. That’s the beauty of match play though. You can play aggressive. I forgot it was match play. Well, yeah. That that was the problem, you know. That was the issue, right? Exactly. That was the issue. First par five of the day. Again, it’s kind of blind. Like I don’t really know where I’m supposed to go, but just take a guess. The fairway that I see. Great ball. Thank you. Here we go. Yep. I have noticed that down here it’s like way hillier in Austin, guys. I wanted to go for it, but I don’t have the best lie. And I’m out the rough. There’s water short at 7 iron here. Probably will miss it to be honest. I feel like I’ve put it cross-handed for so long, I have forgotten what it’s like to putt the traditional way.
