Veteran PGA Tour star Billy Horchel has proposed a major rethink of the tour schedule, suggesting a reduction in the number of events while ensuring equal fields and prize money across every tournament. Having competed at the top level of men’s professional golf for 15 years, Horchel has witnessed numerous changes on the PGA Tour. The latest being the signature event format. Starting in 2026, nine tournaments will carry this elevated status. each featuring a $20 million purse limited to 70 players and favoring those high in the FedEx Cup standings. Horchel believes the current system creates an uneven playing field and wants to give every PGA Tour card holder the opportunity to play in all events. If I ran the tour, I’d ideally cut it to about 25 events per year and make every tournament equal. Horseshoe told Fried Egg Golf, “I’m not sure it works perfectly in practice because bigger markets like New York, Chicago, or LA are naturally going to invest more and want to host Premier events, but I create a 25 event schedule where each tournament has a 120man field. It’s a smaller tour, but it gives every full status member the chance to compete in every event.” Horschel explained that guaranteeing spots in all open PGA Tour events would benefit both the players and the organization. From the moment I got on tour, I’ve always thought it was odd that full members weren’t guaranteed entry into every event. If there’s a way to structure the tour so every member can play in every open event, it’s a win-win for both the players and the PGA Tour. Horchel’s 2025 season was limited to the opening five signature events as he missed much of the year after undergoing hip surgery in April. He made his comeback last month as defending champion at the BMW PGA Championship, marking a return to action following his recovery.
