The Bank of Utah Championship is shaping up to be an exciting week in the desert and the experts have made their picks. Let’s start with Kurt Kitayyama who comes in at plus 2,000. Kityama finished last season ranked 71st in the world, but has surged to 34th heading into this week. He’s one of the best on tour in putting average, ranked 20th at 1.726. and he thrives on par fours, ranking 17th with a 3.98 scoring average. With 11 par fours at Black Desert, that’s a key stat to watch. Kityama tied for 25th here last year, firing a 6 under 65 in his opening round. If he can find that early spark again, he’s a real threat to contend. Next up, Rico Hoey at plus 2500. Hoey is a TA green machine ranking second on the PGA Tour in strokes gained tet green and first among all players in this field. He’s also 11th in strokes gained approach which makes him a strong fit for this course. The concern though is his putting. When the flat stick cools off, his momentum tends to fade. Hoey finished tied for 21st here last season, but if he can find a hot hand on the Greens, don’t be surprised if he’s in the mix late on Sunday. Matt Wallace enters at plus 3,500 and is a fascinating pick. He didn’t play this event last year, but brings some eye-catching stats. Wallace ranks second on tour in strokes gained around the green and 28th in total driving efficiency, making him well suited for Black Desert’s long par fives. He’s also strong on par fours, ranking 32nd overall. Interestingly, Wallace has one of the strangest putting trends on tour. He struggles most rounds, but catches fire on Saturdays. If he can extend that magic through Sunday, he could easily surprise the field. Looking deeper, Bo Hustler at plus 5,500 is another name to keep an eye on. One of the better putters on tour, he ranks 22nd in putting average and seventh in strokes gained around the green, even ahead of world number one Scotty Sheffller in that category. He finished tied for 11th in this event last year, and his all-around consistency makes him a strong mid-range pick. Doug Gim at plus 6,000 also deserves attention. Gim ranks 10th in strokes gained, ta green, and 17th in approach. However, his putting has held him back, sitting near 170th on tour in that stat. If he can find a rhythm with the putter, his ball striking could carry him to a top finish. And finally, for those looking for a long shot thrill, Kevin Strman at plus 20,000 might be worth a small wager. The veteran fired rounds of 64 and 63 last year on his way to 19 under, proving he knows how to score here. At 46 years old and ranked 396th in the world, expectations should be tempered, but his past performance makes him an intriguing dark horse. This year’s Bank of Utah Championship promises drama, bold play, and plenty of birdies. With a field this deep, the only sure thing is that the desert will once again deliver an unforgettable week of golf.
