18 Holes at Machynys Monk’s Island Resort. Every shot golf vlog from a Jack Nicklaus designed course

[Music] I hope the girls go up. Not a bad first drive actually. It’s super early. It’s actually pretty sunrise. So, here we are on the first super early. They’re actually watching the greens. It could be quite interesting when we get up there about 1:65ish maybe. Lovely sunrise there. And a view back towards the tea. through the water. Pretty good into the shower. Not quite sure I’m going to film this putt, though. Well, that’s a great start. Just had a very quick um chat with one of the green keepers who says that obviously, you know, they’re in decent condition for this time of year, but uh I think two weeks time they will be absolutely perfect, which for this time of year, 31st of March today, by midApril is absolutely fantastic. So, yeah, impressive stuff. Right. Very low. [Music] I’ll take that. Skull luck up ahead as well. Water is big feature here. That’s nice. Quick look back to the very glary tea. Beautiful pond actually with the mist rising. Just about to get the green as well. Great start though. That’s a nice [Music] try to hit it too hard. It was difficult to the low sun. I should be fine. Nice little look back across the pond here. Just mowing the second green corn, the great crusted greaves and the pond and back to the second. Beautiful morning. That gorge is smashing too. The right hand of the pilot. One of the disadvantage of playing that this time is the clubhouse is closed. So, I don’t even know if this is a four or five. So, uh just have to play it as it comes. So, very glary look up and as you look back to the tea terrible topped it totally, but it’s just short of the green. That’s filthy. Take that. Big wide sort of um figure eight shaped green. Not that long actually if it is par five. had a quick look back down the hole. And obviously I found the sand with the fairway bunkers about 50 yards out. But yeah, great start still. Maybe a little leftish way. Not very far. Peragrin and chettes wolver off this tea is very impressive. Fly heavy the sound. So yeah, on this one we’ve got a great big bunker in the middle of the fairway just off to my right. Just in there there’s a view back to the tea and then on here on the left you’ve actually got where I was thought my ball has ended up in a little bit of water just there. So yeah, difficult t-shot actually quick look down the hole. Just waited for the green to be cut actually. So, it’s nicely uh nicely done. A quick look back down the fourth hole here. I knew it came in. Not quite sure how much. That’s fine. Nice chiffy singing. Paragin lifting on the uh electricity pylon over there. As you can see, the greens aren’t perfect, but they have been treated. The green keeps said they had 60 tons of sand down them. So I think probably two weeks time, middle of April, they’ll be absolutely pristine. But even so, for the end of March, very, very good. I keep a right should be fine turned directly behind here. I mean a lot of these holes have got incredibly long back tees. Um but you’ve actually got the trust of steel works the old trust of steel works down there. the fridge. Not the best from there, but it’s okay. So, obviously drove over the fairway bunker, and then there’s two bunkers off to the left here. And there’s your view back towards the tea. Sweet. That’s decent. It’s a nice um diagonal green this one. Bunker just beyond the flag just down there and obviously water down to the side. Then water here as well and another bunker down there. So yeah, challenges all around. Def definitely got an American feel to it, but it is a Nicholas design course, so you’d expect that sand. A good swing there. Yeah, don’t want that back. Back in the hole. So, there’s a glary look back towards the tea here in the par five. Avoided the geese. Fortunately, there’s two big fairway bunkers here on the right hand side. Excuse the wobble. And there’s a view to the green. So, I’m probably about uh 130ish out. And the view back to the clubhouse as well. Long. That’s it. Oh, I didn’t think I had enough. It corrupted. A lucky path. Beautiful skyark as well. Big white green on this. Uh bunker at the back. Water obviously bunker at the front as well. And water if you way right. And there’s a view back. Short break. Not a good swing. Not so good. difficult chip there. People behind, people ahead just jumped in bunker at the back and to the left and there’s your view back down the hole. All right. Hopefully. Oh, no. Simply fat. Let’s go and finish that off. Yeah, I am rushing here. Skip yourself. What’s that? better here. Bunkers front to back and then three bunkers on the left. So yeah, challenging again. A quick look back down. Oops, excuse the wobble. Not the longest. That’s all right. The two loops are nine from the clubhouse. So I just nip back the putting green back over the front nine back to the clippers going short. It was a reasonable effort but a bit short. So a couple of bunkers way further down. There’s a view back to the tea. A nice big heron taken off there. Keep going. Keep going. Not too bad. Nicely done. Bit a tricky up and down actually there. Very tight lie for the eight iron. But a big old green this one. Longish path four bunker behind it as well. It’s a big wide green. Lots of undulations. Bunker there and bunker there. Thought it was in my mouth a little bit. Was it towards the lake? But yeah, that’s great. That’s easy. Seven. Never mind. That’s a nice three. It’s a really big long green on this. Probably 40 yards maybe. Back to front. Bunker to my right. Water to the left. So yeah, happy to walk off of the park. There you go. It’s good stuff. Okay, half the swing there. over the middle of the bunker. So there’s a view back to the TE’s here. You can see the two guys on the right are taking playing off the back back TE’s. Longer carry over the water. I’m at the 150 marker here. Bunker on the right hand side. And there’s your view into the green. Go up. Go on. Yeah, nice shot. Just a little short. That was close. The bunker at the back here. Just the one back there. And then there’s a bunker here. Not sure about that. We shall see down there. That’s fine. Didn’t see that one off the uh you know, I didn’t see it land cuz it’s gone into this sort of boggy bit down here. So, I just dropped one out. So, I just playing three. And there’s your view back to the tea. Sit down. Keep you going. Yeah, that saves a seven. But yeah, couple of big bunkers around this again. Big old green this. So, one at the back, um, one at the front there and one to the right and the pond as well. All right. middle of the middle. SL just left of the bunker. Nice view behind. I might just quickly sprint up to the tea and uh show you from there. So, there’s a view from the back te’s. But beautiful uh if you just pan around here. Smashing view. Bring it level down the lacerest. That’s wonderful. And absolute mil pond of a sea as well. I believe that is probably Bry Holmes, isn’t it? And Witford Point, just right. So, fairway bunker on the left here. Obviously, several bunkers here. Another one far right. I need you back to the tea. it. Yeah, that’s lovely. I can have that right next to the estry here. That’s beautiful down there and great big bunkers here to the side and a big wide green. Just the nice chap I just spoke to the view of your house in the background. Cracking day, eh? I think it’s okay. It’s not there. It’s not wet anywhere. Beautiful skylock. Chase going right on line. Couple of clubs short. Fairway bunker there on the left. And there’s a view back towards the sea. Good for line. Never mind. Still, I think I played pretty well on the hole. Big old green this one. Stayed dry as well for both shots, which is fantastic. and beautiful light looking back down the hole. So yeah, it’s cracking. Nice pot calling then as well which is quite unusual. Beautiful here on the right, isn’t it? Lovely light behind us. There’s the pot. This there just died again. [Music] Lucky creep over the bunker. Yeah, just to the uh right of the fairway bunker. Actually, center of the fairway, but loads of sand around. Bunk to the left and then view back to the tea. Uh, not great travel. Yeah, it’s a good save. I was thinking that’s uh six in the middle of the fairway. That’s a whopping gray green this really challenging hole. A fabulous view behind. I’ll show you in a second cuz this guy’s coming up behind life. Awful swing. Front edge. Terrible swing. But that’s all right. Super view though. Look at this. I get the time to show you. But yeah, to the estry on the right hand side. So you’ve got the whole of uh the troster works there and then beautiful on the estry here with the tide mostly in then across the north G on the other side. I think that’s Rosilli down and then Whitford Point and then the rest of the lash down there. Fantastic. Keep going. That should be good enough. Yeah, it’s a nice three. So, big old green again here. It’s not quite as big as the last screen. I couldn’t show you on the last screen from rushing again to try and fit it all in. But yeah, big bunker down the front. So big sort of clover shape this one and uh bunker there to the right. And there’s your view back to the tea. But yeah, it’s very enjoyable. It’s very enjoyable indeed. Come on. Heart was in my mouth then. I’m not the longest of hitters, but that was uh a little bit daunting, but uh the guy behind is a very, very good player indeed, and I’m sure he’s going to have no problem at all with another 40 yards off the tea getting onto the fairway. But yeah, it’s a challenging drive that one. I’m very glad to be dry. Stopped dead. I think it uh yeah, managed to clear the water probably by about 35 yards, 30 yards maybe. So yeah, a view back towards the tea. That’s all right. They’ll follow through. Yeah, you just got to be wary on the on the second shot as well if you’re short like I was cuz you’ve got uh water down here as well. That’s all right. Hopefully knock that in. Yeah. Nice solid five to finish. Bunker at the back. Bunkers everywhere at the front actually. And I’ll do an outro in a second game. the guys that are behind. But yeah, lots of sand there and all around in the clubhouse. So yeah, very enjoyable. So just finally picked up my scorecard, which I didn’t have for the rest for the whole round, and come here onto the ninth green. Um, just to do a quick outro, I just wanted to say what a really enjoyable course this is. It’s quite different to ones I’ve played before in that it’s sort of an American style course. Um, relatively new, sort of 20-ish years old, I think, there thereabouts. Um and yeah, very enjoyable indeed. So, um nice easy walk, which is uh lovely seeing as I had a past 4 alarm call this morning. Um and very early start, so um teed off before 7. Um but yeah, very enjoyable course indeed. Lots of uh tactical bunkers, lots of water. Um was fortunate to avoid most of it uh most of the trouble. Um but on the whole, just really really good quality course. You can tell that, you know, the greens are probably two weeks time. I think they’re going to be absolutely fantastic. You know, it’s very early in the season. I’m trying to get as many courses in while we’ve actually got some nice weather and we’ve actually had a decent winter as well. Um, so you can see that the greens been scarified. They’ve had a lot of sand put on them, but still for the time of year, they are very, very good indeed. You know, didn’t really have any problems with it with um sort of bobbly putts or anything like that. So, I can’t blame any anything on the greens. It was, you know, good experience. Uh nice firm fairways again for the time of year. A little bit damp in places, but again still fantastic. Um so yeah, a very enjoyable course indeed. Um reasonable value green fees. I mean it’s a little bit more expensive. Certainly I think in the summer the prices go up. Um so it’s sort of on my sort of more expensive scale from the ones I I tend to play, but I’m glad I’ve played it and managed to get in just before the the rates have gone up, which is really good. And some cracking views on the Estri as well. So really really nice stuff there. So, um, on the whole, very, very enjoyable course indeed. I’d imagine in the summer is absolutely fantastic. Um, so yeah, get yourselves down here and try it out. It’s really, really good. Recommend it. [Music] Heat. Hey, Heat. [Music]

Every shot from my round at Machynys Monk’s Island Resort, Llanelli, on 31st March 2025.

I’d heard great things about both the courses I was to play today and first up was Machynys on the outskirts of Llanelli. A Jack Nicklaus designed coastal course featuring prominent American elements with water prominent alongside more traditional coastal golf features, this was always going to be a challenge to savour.

It was early in the golfing season being the final day of March and as such I was still eligible (just!) for the winter green fee rate which always helps keeps costs down. Being early in the year, the course was still waking up but despite this, it was in fine condition with the greens only being a few weeks off an excellent standard. Fairways were a little damp in places but a very good overall.

The course itself is really well designed with plenty to test all levels of golfer. Dozens of well placed bunkers, both on the fairways and around the greens, are all there to catch errant shots and with water on many holes, golfing psychology comes into play in avoiding making a high number. The course also has several tee options present to cater for all levels of ambition and ability. I stuck to my customary yellows but off the very back tees the course poses a stern challenge to even the longest of hitters.

The greens were nice to play on with good variations in contours and they all had a consistent pace. As mentioned it was early in the year when I played here but you can see they are well looked after and it was only a matter of time before they would have been superb.

The course was a little busy when I played, even starting off just before sunrise, so I found it a little challenging to put together a relaxed video at times. Things eased a little on the back 9 and I was able to take in more of the ambience of the course, including plenty of nature and some brilliant views over the Loughor estuary and over towards North Gower.

All the staff and members I spoke to were lovely and friendly and rightly proud of their club as they should be. Come in the warmer months and you’re in for a real treat although it was still excellent when I played.๐Ÿ‘โ›ณ

  1. Nice video. Have you played Morriston in Swansea? That's an excellent course. And Mond Valley in Clydach is another decent round.

  2. Tough track, very lucky to play it on such a still day. Last time I played it in June, the wind was up at 25mph gusting to 35. Beat me up!
