GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Richmond Spiders men’s golf team finished ninth in the 15-team Furman Intercollegiate Sunday with a team score of 20-over par (872). The Spiders, in the middle of a stretch of three tournaments in 13 days, will next head to Mexico to participate in George Washington’s Monterrey Collegiate Classic this Friday and Saturday.

Richmond’s top individual scorer was junior Jack LaPiana, who followed back-to-back rounds of 1-under (70) Saturday with a 4-over 75 Sunday to finish at 2-over par (215), tied for 13th in the field of 87 golfers. LaPiana has now finished in the top 20 in three straight tournaments, a career best.

Freshman Lucas Rizo-Patron and junior Quin Polin were among a group of four golfers who tied for 30th at 6-over par (219). Rizo-Patron led UR with 38 pars during the event, tied for sixth most in the field, while Polin fired Richmond’s best round of the day Sunday, an even-par 71.

“I just tried to avoid mistakes today because [Furman Golf Club] was playing hard,” said Polin.

Sophomore Carson Baez tied for 57th at 10-over par (223) and junior Parker Moellinger tied for 66th at 12-over par (225) after both shot rounds of 75 (+4) Sunday.

Competing as an individual, senior Drew Carlin tied for 46th at 9-over par (222). Carlin played the par 5s in a combined 5-under par during the event, tied for third best in the field.

This week’s event in Mexico will be Richmond’s final tournament this fall and its third since opening play in Georgia Southern’s Bash in the Boro last Monday.

“We’re just trying to prioritize rest when we can,” said Polin of the team’s approach to this final stretch of the fall season.
