Last week in the quarterfinals of the Grand Prix, Luke Litler and Gerwin Price put on one of the best darts matches that I’d ever seen. If you had not watched it yet, what I want you to do is watch this video and then go back and watch that match because being a teacher, I can’t help but view things from that teacher lens and think about teachable moments from things that I watch. And there are two really big takeaways that I got from watching that match that I want to share with you guys that will help you become a better darts player. So, watch this, take the things that I say, go back and watch that darts match cuz I mean it was just awesome. Uh, so the first thing that we’re going to talk about here is nerves. I get asked a lot on how do you not get nervous when you play darts? And when I get asked that question, I feel like I’m being asked it in the sense that I don’t get nervous when I play darts. And the fact of the matter is is that I get nervous every single time that I play a competitive darts match. And also the truth is is that everybody gets nervous when they play a competitive darts match. So the first thing that I need you to do is that realize that you are not at a disadvantage just because you feel nervous. There is no magic cure that is going to make you not feel nervous. Now, the big difference here about not getting nervous versus managing your nerves. So, that’s the biggest thing is that everyone gets nervous. It’s all about how you manage it. And if you go back and watch this match against Litler and Gerwin Price, you will see that they are struggling with their nerves in this match. So watching it, watching two of the best dart players in the world uh struggle with their nerves and if you can view that and be like, hey, they’re struggling with their nerves, so it’s okay for me to struggle with my nerves, too. I just need to work on managing it better. There is something about watching professional darts that makes you realize I’m not going to say how easy it is because obviously they play at such a high level, but if you think about the game of darts, it’s a very simple game as far as you just throw your dart and hit your target. All of us have hit our target when we’re throwing at it. It’s just a matter of how often we do it. So I when I say easy, I mean easy in that sense. So when you see professional dart players perform at that level, you can, you know, view it and be like, hey, they’re doing it and it can boost your confidence. So this is a way that you can relate with these dart players is that realize that they get nervous and struggle with their nerves, too. And it is a prime example in this match because it’s a double in format and there’s a lot of key darts missed at doubles, ins and outs. So yeah, that’s one thing that I really took away is about the nerves. So let’s talk about a couple things that you can do that will help manage your nerves on the dart board. The first thing all I can say is that you need to have fun. You know, the more fun you’re having, the less nervous you’re going to feel. So if you’re putting too much pressure on yourself and you’re not having fun throwing darts, there’s a very good chance you’re going to feel a lot more nervous when playing. If you go into every single darts match with the intention of you just want to play and have fun, of course you want to win. but with the intention of having fun. That will help you calm your nerves. Another thing that will help calm your nerves, and this is honestly the most important one, is that you need to go out and play more. The more you put yourself in competitive environments and you feel these nerves, you will learn ways how to manage them. Uh, you know, they say practice makes perfect. If you want to perfect managing your nerves, you need to practice that. And the best way to practice that is by putting yourself in situations that make you feel nervous. Uh, you know, when I first started playing darts, I mean, like I said, I still do get nervous every time I play competitive matches, but especially when I first started playing, I would get really nervous when I would play dart players that I perceived as better than me. And when I say perceived as better than me, you know, they probably were better than me or are better than me, whatever it might be. But that’s the way I viewed it. I was like, “This player is so much better than me. I don’t know if I can beat them. They’re probably going to beat me.” And that’s when I would get way too nervous in that darts match. And ultimately, I would beat myself by going into that darts match with that negative mindset already. So, the first time I ever beat one of these guys that I thought were better than me, I first started playing in Denver, and there’s a lot of good talent in Denver. I missed the Denver dart scene so much. I could sit here and rattle off all these dart players. But the first time I beat one, it was a total mindset shift. It’s like, I can beat these guys. Why am I getting so nervous about it? And then I would beat that other guy that I thought I could never beat. And then I would beat another one. And then before I know it, like in Denver, I really wasn’t getting those nerves at all when I was playing those guys. And then as my darts career went on and I started playing in the CDC, I kind of had a reset of that where I started playing these guys and I’m like, “Oh my gosh, I’m playing, you know, Leonard Gates. Oh my gosh, I’m playing Larry Butler. I’m playing Chuck Pulio.” You know, I’m playing all these guys. Uh Danny Lowby. Once again, I could sit here and rattle off all these names and I would get all those nerves again. But the more I played in the CDC, the more I found myself getting some wins over these guys and then my nerves went down and I was able to manage them better. So get out and play more and especially play players that are better than you. And of course, the last thing we’re going to talk about here is practice at home the situations that you get most nervous in. Are you getting most nervous when it comes time to hit that double to win? Are you getting more nervous trying to score? Uh, obviously there’s the nerves of just being in a competitive match, but if you’re getting nervous in specific spots of the match, that is what you need to practice at home. So, for me, for most of my darts career, my scoring was my strong suit. And I would get nervous when it came down to those doubles, like, oh man, I have three darts. I have to hit this out or the player behind me is going to. So, I’ve changed my whole practice routine at home and I basically solely focus on doubles now. And lately, when I go out and play darts, once again, I still do get nervous, but when I come down to those doubles, I’m not even thinking about it because I practice my outs so much at home. When I’m in the competitive environment, I’m just in flow state and I just throw at the doubles and hope I hit them. All right, so that’s that, guys. The nerves, uh, you know, seeing them with their nerves, etc. that’ll help you with their nerves. Another big takeaway that I took from this match, and this might seem kind of obvious, but I do see a lot of dart players do this when I play competitive matches, and that is that you can never give up. I don’t want to give away spoilers, but if you watch this match, you will see that there are moments where it would be easy for one of the players to kind of give up and throw lazy darts, maybe speed up their rhythm because they feel like they’ve lost or whatever it might be. But it is so important that you stick into these matches. Think about how many darts matches that you see where someone rattles off four, five, six, seven straight legs. Yeah, it doesn’t happen all the time, but if you kind of get in that mindset that you’re already done and you’re going to lose, there is a guaranteed chance that you are not going to be able to get that comeback. So, it is so important to always keep your head in the darts match. Don’t change your rhythm. Just keep flowing the way that you normally throw darts, the way you’ve been practicing at home. just keep it up because there’s that always that chance that you start feeling good and hitting your target or there’s a chance that your opponent slows down a little bit. But the point I’m trying to make here is that you have to keep that mindset that you are always in the game until that final double is hit. All right, guys. That’s it for this one. Go check out that dart match. It was so awesome. We recently hit 30,000 subscribers on Bullshot Darts. I cannot say thank you enough, guys. That’s so awesome.
