most of the season behind us. Grant, talk about the mindset for teams right now. Well, if people tell you the standings don’t affect the mindset, BA, they’re lying. Everyone is asking themselves how they can improve or maintain position. You just don’t want to backslide now. So, the opening lineup for the Mavericks. Davidson Lively, the lengthy combo inside. Thompson and Flag fill out the wings and it’s Irving in at the point. Here’s Reeves and the rebound goes to Dallas. Last time they met was in Dallas. Yeah, they destroyed this team on the glass in the last meeting. And Aiden has got the ball here for Los Angeles. Back to Donic. Aiden in the high post. [Music] Lively grabs a miss and it’s the Mavericks ball. Time now to hear from our reporter Ally Leforce. Well, JJ Reick had a few moments to share with me. This many years into the game and the Kyrie challenge is still puzzling. Coach said, “We’d actually prefer to see him shoot. At least our feet can be more set outside to contest. People forget how good of a shooter Kyrie can be.” He continued and said, “And threes are so hard to compete against. We want to try and limit those first.” Back to you and Ally. Thank you for that. Outside Reeves. James, a screen on Thompson to the paint. Well, they tried to punch the ball inside right there, but the window closed quickly. That’s great defense. The Lakers have gone one for three so far from deep. Reeves. The shot is good. Donic making the play. And any opening on the arc is a good one for Reeves. He’ll take that corner tray every chance he gets. Outside Davis. Another three for Dallas. And both teams running long range plays that are working. Yeah, just going back and forth. It is really competitive out there. Now, here’s Duch coming off 41 points last game out. And there’s Luca, one of the most entertaining players in the league. Dallas has gone two of two at the perimeter. Pass to Thompson. Davis with a screen on Reeves inside and stolen by Vanderbilt. Fast break. Here come the Lakers and he’ll draw the foul. He’ll head to the line for two. It’s going to be on Anthony Davis. Los Angeles shooting their first free throws tonight. [Applause] Take a break. Take a break. two shots [Applause] and he drops a first. Washington’s checked in for Anthony Davis [Applause] and Vanderbilt drops them both. First quarter of basketball, just over two and a half minutes played so far and Tim last made Dallas with a 1.8% chance to win the lottery. But it happened. Incredibly, it ends up with the arrival of Cooper Flag, which appeases a Mavs fan base that was just about an open revolt. So, there’s hope both now and in the future. Well, he got the shot he loves, and the defense should honestly be relieved. He didn’t punish them for being a little bit soft there in the mid-range. What an athletic slam by LeBron, showing these young guys how it’s done. A terrific view of that move captured on the connected cam thanks to AT&T. And Irving has got the ball here for Dallas. Trailing by five. [Applause] Fires from deep. Rebound by the Lakers. And you never want to give a shooter like him a clean look. And here’s Donic. Consistent production from him, averaging around 27 1/2 points a game. Shot clock at six. Nice move and the foul is called. He missed it. So he’s got a couple of free throws coming his way. It goes on Kyrie Irving. And Donas is a walking triple double threat. His versatility and confidence is really special. First trip to the line for him here. [Applause] shooting two. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] That free throw misses. And when we talk about franchise players, guys who can carry a team, Luca Donic is one of the few guys in that category. and he sinks the second. And we’re just over three and a half minutes into this first quarter. Here’s Lively. And a slam dunk by Lively. I just love the strong finish there inside. Man, he’s got that dunker mindset, doesn’t he? Always ready to pounce. The Lakers lead by four. [Applause] Outside Reeves. Pass to Aiden. Vanderbilt. A screen on Irving and there’s the whistle. Illegal screen is the call. You can get away with one once in a while, but it looked like he wasn’t completely set on that pick. Well, often times illegal screens fall into a gray area, but that time he got called for it. Irving against Dunic. Here’s Lively. He’s been productive, averaging just over seven points a game. fires top of the key. Vanderba pulls it in. The Lakers have gone four of six in the first quarter. [Applause] Back to Donic. Five on the clock. The Mavericks pull it in. They couldn’t put the pieces together, losing that last matchup with Phoenix. Just a tough road loss. You’re going against players who are comfortable shooting in their own building. You have to find a way to disrupt their focus. Let’s call it what it was. They got overwhelmed. The matchups were just not in their favor. outside. Reeves [Applause] change right side [Applause] and it’s Flag with a rebound. The Mavericks trailing. [Applause] Here’s Irving. No good. That would have tied it. Well, the defense challenged him just enough to force that miss. They really collapsed when he got close to the rim. Dallas has gone two for three from outside the arc. Has the flag. Oh, that doesn’t go on the chance to tie. Well, the Lakers shooting 44% to start this ball game. And here’s Vanderbilt from the Ark. Thompson pulls it in. And it’s the Mavericks with the ball. trailing by two [Applause] to the middle and Washington powers it through. Yeah, he gives up a few inches to most of his matchups, but his ability to rise above always gives him a chance. And so now a timeout called by JJ Reic. I think right now he might be looking at some adjustments. in terms of motivation what they said to you. all day that you know like this is going to take patience checks that might lose homies like you might get it in a year it might take 10 to do you know your purpose oh yeah I remember you always ded Don’t care what they do in terms of motivation what they said to you. Hey man like this. It’s going to take patience. Check steady maintenance. You might lose homies. You might make friends, but you get it in a year. It might take the service when you know your purpose. Oh yeah. Aimura has checked in for Los Angeles. Let’s see the stat sheet here for Cooper flag. Los Angeles has gone one to two from three-point land so far. Himura, the pass to Reeves. pass to Aiden. Shoots over lively. Here’s Donic and it falls for him. He’s hit three of his first four attempts. And so it’s Dallas with it. Trailing by two. [Applause] Irving looking it over. screen over pass to Thompson. Launches a three. Aimura with a rebound for Los Angeles. They’ve gone five of 12 in this first quarter. Here’s Aiden. Oh, and the jam by Aton. Yeah, looking at Aton using all of his height and reach, slamming it down on a helpless defense. Mavericks trail by four. Grant LeBron has had so much recognition over the years, but truly he might not get enough credit for what he’s meant to the NBA. Yeah, you might be right, BA. Truly a global ambassador for the game of basketball. He set the standard for what a superstar can be really in any sport. Hayes has checked in for Los Angeles. outside Reeves. Here’s James and the layup falls. James has got his second bucket of the night. Well, I’d watch him the rest of the game because he is seeing a lot of shots drop. [Applause] And so it’s Irving who brings up the ball for the Mavs. [Applause] Pass to Russell. [Applause] to the inside and he takes it in for the layup off a very nice feed and another great assist. The offense is really clicking now. The Lakers lead by four outside Reeves. Himura the pass to James hits a three-pointer. James has got seven. And one way to stretch a career, taking more shots from outside. LeBron, the ageless one, knows it well. [Applause] Now here’s Marshall. Check by James. Gaffford. Passes to Russell. Just five on the clock. [Applause] Rejected by Donic. Defense at its best from Donic. like to see him putting that much effort into his D. And it’s time to take another look at that powerful block. Oh my. Oh my. And that was textbook defense, positioning himself well to send it back. Lori has checked in for the Lakers. Marcus Smart comes in for Reeves. And Dallas also making a switch. Christiey’s checked in for Irving. Here’s Marshall. He’s coming off a 10-point game against the Suns in Phoenix. And now a look at the toughest defenses around the league. The Mavericks number one. Well, we can talk about their defensive rating and their pace of play and all of those things, but the bottom line is this team is hard to score on. Donic with it. Guarded by Russell. Laia passes to Donic. It’s Smart on the wing defended by Christie. Aimura with a screen on Christie. And it’s smart missing. So far, rebounding has been a focal point for them. Washington passes to Russell. [Applause] Washington. A screen on Donic. Six on the shot clock. [Applause] The three from Russell. The Mavericks rebound. Washington. A screen on Donic. Six to shoot. Christie finds Gafford. Another shot. Gafford controls the rebound and the put back. And those second chance buckets are major bonus points if you can get him. Russell against Donic. Kicks it out to Smart. Lets it go from deep. The Mavericks pull it in. [Applause] Russell deciding where to go with it. Shot. It’s Washington high post. Labra is there outside for Russell. Up and over. Doic. The shot by Russell. No good. Well, he better focus now. His efficiency is dropping. But there is enough game left to make corrections. Let’s go now to the sideline and catch up with Alli Leforce. Hey, what Luca Donic does with the ball in his hands is never predetermined. He said, quote, “I just see what the defense gives me. It’s never the same decision. It’s a lot of factors. You’ve got to look at who’s guarding you, if the shots going in or not. There’s a lot to think about and then decide.” Brian, back to you. He keeps him guessing. Ally, thank you. Now, here’s Christie yet to see a basket. Count that one. 121 left to play in the first quarter. [Applause] Aimura sets a screen. Here’s Donic. Soft touch off the glass. Donic has got nine. Oh, Luca is so skilled at using his body to create good looks inside. [Applause] 105 left to play in the first. Marshall outside Russell screen Nachimura and it’s Marshall penetrating. Oh, he finds himself wide open and drills it. And every trip up the floor. These are the kind of looks you wish for. Donic against Russell and the whistle on the shot. Got some contact there. Misses the shot, but he’ll shoot two. And this team’s offensive catalyst. Donic puts pressure on the defense every possession and he’ll take his third and fourth free throws of the night. [Applause] Take a break. Take a break. Two shots. [Applause] But the line is good. [Applause] Got to get it. Big rebound. Get it. Get it. Get it. Gets one then misses the second attempt from the line. You have to love how fearless they play. It keeps getting them to the free throw line. Washington a good look. It’s rebounded by Los Angeles. A tough loss coming against San Antonio in their last game. In this league, you have to stay active at both ends of the floor. I thought their lackluster defense was the difference in the game. Well, that’s a great point. And you can also add poor communication. The rotations were slow and sometimes not even there at all. Just the fact that Smart is so shifty with the ball makes the defender play him even tighter. Los Angeles shooting their seventh and eighth free throw attempts of the game. Take a break. Take a break. Two shots. [Applause] First one falls. [Applause] I’m not sure the mission on the miss [Applause] and so Smart nails them both. They’re really not doing themselves any favors picking up this many fouls so early. [Applause] Donic against Russell. And looks like an illegal pick was set. That gets the ref’s attention. You’re not going to fool the officials too often on an illegal screen. Well, my feeling is you just want to make sure it’s called consistently both ways and Dantic launches from deep and no good. Trying to get that one to fall. And so it’s the Los Angeles Lakers finishing the quarter with an eight-point lead. Their defensive efforts have paid off, effectively shutting down the opposing offense. Back to the game after this break. [Applause] Hope you’ve enjoyed the broadcast so far. Halfway through the first half in this one. All right. Well, a look at how the points have been generated so far. A scoring breakdown for the Lakers. Well, they found their offensive openings in the mid-range and they continue to find ways to open up those jump shot opportunities. And how about the work they’ve done inside just owning the paint so far on the court for Dallas here in the second. We’ve got PJ Washington. D’Angelo Russell is out there with Max Christie. Then it’s Anthony Davis. And it’s Gafford in at the five. Three on three. Here’s Davis and he was fouled while in the act of shooting. So, he’ll take two free throws. Well, one of the more versatile bigs in this league, AD can guard anyone and can attack from anywhere on the floor. And at 610 with almost a 7 and 1/2t wingspan, is Anthony Davis better at the five position, Tim? Well, BA, he’s versatile enough certainly to handle either spot, but he’s made it clear he wants to play the four and given his injury history, I get where he’s coming from. And he makes a first. And Grant, in recent years, we’ve seen the pace of the NBA game increasing. Yeah, it stagnated in the ‘9s, but it is back. We’re still not at the frenetic pace of the 1960s when we’d see over 120 possessions a game, but the efficiency is at an all-time high. Both free throws good from Davis. [Applause] The Lakers lead by four. Pass to Hayes. Here’s Reeves. Fires at the elbow. Rebound collected by Anthony Davis. Down low and stolen by Hayes. Reeves with the ball. Gafford picks him up. Reeves against Christie and Daniel Gaffford picks up the foul. That’s his first foul of the game. [Applause] Quarter number two with just over a minute of play. Hayes with a screen on Christie. [Applause] And it’s Hayes that time on the assist by Reeves. And the Lakers lead by six. [Applause] And so it’s Russell who brings up the ball for Dallas. [Applause] Gaffford with a screen on Smart. Russell the pass to Gaffford and stolen by Hayes. Larabia outside [Applause] with a screen on Davis. Pass to Hayes. Tipped away. Down to five on the shot clock. Here’s Smart. And the rebound goes to Dallas. Washington outside [Applause] to the paint. Here’s Davis. Davis just merciless inside. Over the years, Davis has packed on a lot of muscle and it served him well right there. [Applause] Los Angeles leading by four and a little under two and a half minutes gone by here in the second quarter. Back to Reeds inside. The shot no good. Nice D from Gaffford. Mavericks shooting the ball at 46% from the floor and rejected. It’s Smart on the wing guarded by Russell. Russell against Smart. Good work defensively by Russell. Now he was bothered just enough to miss that shot. That’s good work by the defense. Outside Davis. [Applause] Excellent D there from Labraia. The Lakers have got nothing to go out of five attempts so far this quarter. Oh, wasted no time on that one. Hachimura’s got five now. A smart decision maker with a versatile skill set. Hachimura always takes the shots that he’s comfortable with. So Jason Kids decided to call timeout here. He’s going to gather the troops and talk it over. [Applause] Heat. [Applause] Heat. [Applause] Heat. Heat. [Applause] The Lakers making a switch here. Connects checked in. Dallas also making some changes. Marshall, he’s checked in for Washington. Exom comes in for Christy. And Kyrie Irving is subbed in for Russell. Just under three and a half minutes played here in the second quarter. The drive by Irving over Smart. No one on him. Makes an easy one. Irving’s got his first points of the game. The Kyrie still getting to the rim at will even after more than a decade in this league. And there’s the foul. It’ll go on Kyrie Irving. That’s foul number two for him. Yeah, he tried to gain position but couldn’t quite get there. [Applause] Here’s Aimura. And with that length and verticality that AG possesses, it feels like there is no daylight. [Music] Outside Irving clock at six. Davis with a screen on Smart. Oh, got a piece of it. [Applause] Aimura with a ball. 14 points for him. last game against San Antonio. Smart passes to Hayes. And here’s Reeves. Shot clock at six. Outside connect. Nice ball movement by Los Angeles. And it’s Smart missing. I know he’s on a cold streak, but he can’t let that get in his head. If he can just make a couple of buckets, though, this can all be put in his rearview mirror. Now, here’s Irving. 23 points for him. last game against the Suns in Phoenix and Reeves pulls it down. That is a rarity. When he takes flight, he usually hammers it home. Well, scouts were buzzing about Connect’s ability to attack the rim with a ton of ferocity. Now we see it in person. Mavericks trail by seven. Now here’s Irving. Looking at his stats, he’s getting just over 23 points a game. Davis showing some toughness there. Easy look when the defender isn’t fighting over the screen. Yeah. And that’s the effectiveness of the twoman game right there. [Applause] And here’s Smart. He’ll bring it up for Los Angeles. [Applause] The shot won’t fall. Great D that time from Irving. Well, he’s over, but they’re still winning and that’s really all that matters. Davis. The pass to Exom. [Applause] Squeeze to the inside. Outside for Irving. Fires for three. Smart with the defensive effort. The Lakers lead by five. Pass to Reeves. Hayes with a screen on Irving to the middle. Oh, what a fast break for Dallas and throws it down on the coast to coast drive and really showing the athleticism flying solo. Well, he had the spotlight. Why not add a little flare? Now here’s Hachimura. He’s got five. And so now a timeout called by JJ Reic. Coach taking this moment to speak to his guys, maybe alter some of the game plan. Heat. Heat. [Applause] Heat. Heat. [Applause] And Los Angeles will go for a different look here. DeAndre Eaton, he’s checked in for Hayes. Vanderbilt comes in for Aim Mura. LeBron, he’s checked in for Connect. And Luca Donuch subbed in for Reeves. Dallas also making some changes. Lively, he’s checked in for Gaffford. Flag comes in for Marshall. And it’s Klay Thompson in for Exom. Vanderbilt. The pass to Donic. Off target from three-point range. He is just so deadly from out there. You expect that to fall. And for all the talk of unicorn center, a lot to be said for a rim running big man like Derek Lively. Tim. Yeah, his mobility fits the modern game. BA, he can move his feet which allows him to cover in space. And then on the break and as a rim roller, watch your head. So, it’s Los Angeles now after the basket by Dallas. Smart passes to Donic and they doubled up Donic. Shot clock at five. Here’s James. And that’ll be Los Angeles ball as it goes out of bounds. Lakers able to keep the possession. Marshall, he’s checked in for Dallas. [Applause] Here’s James. The Lakers with another miss. The Mavericks have gotten six of 10 shots to drop in the second. Nice work, Irving for three and Aiden pulls it down. Aiden’s got four rebounds now. Vanderbilt the pass to Aiden and Aiden with the stuff. Got the ball right inside. Such a welltimed pass. And so it’s Dallas with it. Hits a three-point game. Thompson outside. It’s stolen by Smart. Oh, Smart drives. Oh, a nice one-handed slam right there. An impressive athlete. And this is why Smart’s teammates encourage him to drive inside. Dallas has gone 0 for two from outside in the second quarter. Here’s Irving. He’s got it. Just two of seven from the field, though. Their defense just falls apart once the ball goes inside. [Applause] And so it’s Donic with it. He brings it up for Los Angeles outside Vanderbilt. [Music] [Applause] Now James, he’s coming off a 25-point game against San Antonio. And it wasn’t just the scoring. His assist numbers tell an even bigger story. Now here’s Donic. Three-point lead. That’s how you stay connected to a shooter was right in his jersey. Here’s Flag. Yes. And a nice assist from Thompson. Thompson’s got his third assist of the night. Yeah, once Flag gets the ball in there, it’s pretty much a done deal. Here’s Smart. Eight points in his last timeout. Donic outside and he lobbs it up and Aiden with the stuff. Excellent timing by Aiden on the alley pass. He’s perfectly positioned to throw it down. So Jason Kids decided to call a timeout here. A moment to rest and confer on the game play. [Applause] Austin Reeves has checked in for Smart. And Dallas also making a switch. Washington’s checked in. Mavericks trail by three. Thompson outside [Applause] to Lively outside. Irving puts up a three. The Lakers with a rebound. Vanderbilt’s got his fourth rebound in this one. Well, this has been far from his best game. And if they’re going to come back here, he’s got to find a way to get going. Here’s Donic over Irving. Lively with a block and the ball goes out of bounds. Last touch by Lively. And the fans love seeing incredible moments on defense like that block. Oh, terrific defensive intensity right there. Getting stops like that is crucial for them right now. From deep. Here’s Donic. Even though they’re up, they haven’t been impressive from distance this quarter, shooting under 30%. Well, he’s not having as much success shooting the ball early as he wanted, but so far it’s not hurting their team performance. The Mavericks making a switch here. Martin’s checked in. [Applause] Los Angeles leading by three. Donic passes to James. Aiden with a screen. Hands it with nobody near him. James has got nine. He’s getting it done offensively. making winning plays at every turn. Pass to Martin. Thompson outside. [Applause] We’ve got a minute 48 left in the second period. Kept alive. Irving for three. Knocks down the long J. Irving’s got seven points for the quarter. And after not scoring in the first, he’s finally starting to get into a groove. Oh, swiped away. And here’s Martin. Irving with it now. Donic defending. Back to Martin. Swish. And here’s Thompson for three. LeBron with the rebound. The Lakers in the lead. Pass to Aiden. Donic outside. Now here’s Vanderbilt. Lets it fly. That one’s good from James on the assist by Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt’s got three assists tonight. Yeah, you can tell LeBron understands the game. He knows a pick is all he needs to beat the D. There’s 53 seconds left to play in the first half. Irving against Donic. Oh, and he got fouled on his way up. He’ll head to the line to shoot two. Jared Vanderbilt picks one up. Well, great to see Kyrie Irving back on the court and producing, Tim. Yeah, with that ACL tear coming late in the season, it really set him back. The game is just better with Kyrie in action, making highlights on a nightly basis. The first free throw is good. Yeah, Kyrie Irving is one of the most skilled guards of all time. He has shot 50, 40, 90 in a season and we all know about his ability to finish at the rim. And Dallas making a change here. Washington’s checked in. Both free throws good from Irving. Getting themselves to the line this quarter is a good way to get their offense rolling. Pass to Donic. [Applause] Here’s James. Lively grabs a miss. Lively’s got six rebounds now in the game. Yeah, and they’ve taken their foot off the gas a little. They were much more aggressive to start the game and really getting their opponent in early foul trouble. Vanderbilt no good. Practically a block. Good strong challenge. He didn’t quite get a hand on it, but he did enough to affect the miss. Irving with a deep three. Oh, it would have counted had it fallen, but it is offline and the first half comes to an end. We’ve got a close game going here. It’s Los Angeles. They’re up by two. Well, now a minute to check in with Ally Leforce. She’s courtside. Hey, Ally. I’m here with PJ Washington. PJ, what will be the key for you guys defensively in the second half? Uh, not letting them get easy routes to the basket and uh contesting their shots, rebounding, and uh not letting them get second chance points. comes back to the fundamentals, guys. Thanks very much, Ally. And folks, we’ll be right back to start the second half of this game. [Applause] We’re back again. Taking a look at Los Angeles. I mean, they’ve established themselves as a competitive team. They feel that they can get a win against any opponent there, Shaq. Well, I don’t know if they have the roster makeup to get to the finals or even conference finals, but on any given night, this team is dangerous. I don’t know, Shack. They look good. And redirecting now to what we saw in that first half. The Lakers find themselves in quite a battle. Yeah, I’ll tell you the fans are on the edge of their seats. They’re getting their money’s worth, Ernie. It is electric in this arena tonight. And the team is vibing. And that’s a wrap on halftime. Thanks for watching as we send you back to BA to call the second half. [Applause] And we’ve got second half action for you. Thus far, a pretty evenly contested game. [Applause] [Applause] And Irving has got the ball here for the Mavs. Trailing by two. Vanderbelt and Aton patrol the paint. Luca and Reeves are the one on the two and it’s James in at the three. That’s the group for JJ Reick getting going here in the second half. So, it’s Los Angeles now after Dallas’s three-pointer on the other end. Donic deciding where to go with it. Six to shoot. And the rebound goes to the Mavericks. Davis has got five rebounds tonight. Pass to Irving. the three and a slam dunk by Lively. And that really has to lift his teammates spirits right now. I’ll tell you, Grant, these second chance buckets could be what this game comes down to. Well, in a game this close, that is a huge play. Now, here is James. Vanderbilt to pass to Donic. Now, Aiden, here’s the three. It’s rebounded by Dallas. Lively has got nine rebounds in the game. Boy, he’s getting it done. [Applause] Vanderbilt against Davis. That’s the flag [Applause] to the inside. Lively and a slam dunk by Lively. Yeah, I like flagging that twoman game. It makes the defense have to decide. Lakers trail by five [Applause] now. Eighton outside. Reeves. Nice ball movement by Los Angeles. James can’t get it to go. That’s three straight misses to start the second half. Not what they wanted. Los Angeles has gone 0 for two from outside here in the third. Vanderbilt. The pass to Eightton to in the cold fell. And so he draws the foul headed to the line to shoot a pair. That’s on Derek Lively. All right, Tim. Back in 1996, you led the league in three-point percentage. You shot 52% on three attempts per game. Talk about the hot hand. Well, BA, it shows you how much the game has changed. I had a green light, but it was a different shade of green. I still only took three per game. Now you have multiple guys every night that will take three in the first quarter. That green light is now neon green for many. No doubt. [Applause] Aiden hits them both. And we know Aiden has all the tools to be a top big man in this league. He just needs to show it on a nightly basis. Thompson finds Irving inside. Oh, it’s blocked. It deflects off the backboard and he’s gone for the lob and they’re running. Played it in with a nice touch off the window. Irving’s got 11 points. Well, when you see how fast Irving is, once he gets a step on you in the open floor, it is over. Here’s James. 11 points in the game. Clock keeps going. Three minutes into the second half now. It’s a one-on-one situation. Davis with it. Picked up by James. It’s tipped. Stolen by Aton. Donic on the wing. Hey yo yo. Right here. Right here. over flag. Donic. No good. And at this point, the defense is daring him to shoot. Irving for three. Here’s Lively. And a slam dunk by Lively. Oh my. What a display of effort. That’s his bread and butter, right? Chasing down the boards. And he showed you great timing as well. Offensive rebounding, one of his specialties. From deep. Here’s Donic. Hits the trifecta. He’s got 13. Slow start here to the second half. Just one for five. Pass to flag. The three from Thompson. Oh, Thompson buries the tray. Oh, you got to love the back and forth. Showing real confidence at the arc. And when you give up a three, there’s always this instinct to try and get it back immediately outside. Reeves James on the wing trying to come right back with a three of his own, but it’s no good. And Dallas with possession. They’re on a 14 to five run. And here’s Flag outside. Rebound. The Lakers. Donic with it. 13 points in the game down low. Lively with a block. Here’s Flag outside. Vanderbilt pulls it in. Vanderbilt’s got six rebounds in the game. Well, he was able to sink a triple back in the first half, but he has yet to connect here after the break. Donic passes to Aiden. Here’s James and once again off the mark by Los Angeles. [Applause] Davis puts it on the deck. Right wing and here’s Flag outside. Good work defensively by James. He’s stacking up the missed shots right now. He needs to find another part of his game that can help his team. Tipped. You know, it almost looked like Flag baited him into taking that so he could spot it away. Outside Davis [Applause] back to Irving. Let’s go with a three and Aiden pulls it down. Aiden’s got six rebounds here tonight. Here’s Donic. Pass to Aiden. Goes back up and it’s blocked by Davis. That is tremendous work by Davis right there. Guys better think twice about challenging him at the rim. All right, guys. Let’s get your take on the hustle stats for Dallas. I mean, those SWATs, they can get into your head, make you think twice about shooting it. So, it’s about more than just those block numbers. I really like their effort in transition tonight. Constantly pushing the pace and then turning that into points. [Applause] some changes for Los Geles. Aimuras checked in for Vanderbilt and Smart subbed in for Reeves. [Applause] Lakers trail by 10. James outside pass to Donic. Pat falls. Nice feed that time from James. Donic has got six in the quarter. And he was non-existent from three in the first half. Now he’s changing the narrative. The Mavericks have gotten seven of 16 shots to go so far in the third quarter. Oh, poked away. Here’s Aimura. Oh, and he took a hard foul on the shot. So, he’ll head to the line to shoot a pair. Almost converts despite the contact. These are his first free throws of the game. [Applause] First one falls for him. Well, legs, when we talk about current players, who are the guys you want taking the shot with the game on the line right now? Well, certainly the tried andrue like Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant. You can’t go wrong there. Or a multi-time MVP and Nicole Joic. And the Lakers making a change here. Hayes has checked in. No good on the second free throw. Part of why they have this lead, they’re doing the little things out there. The three from Thompson. It’s Hayes with a rebound. Lakers trail by six. Now here’s Smart right now contributing around 10 and a half points a game. [Applause] Tries the hook. James can’t get it to go. And so it’s Irving with it. He brings it up for Dallas. They’ve led by as much as 10. After a rough first half, it’s good to see him start to put the pieces together here. [Applause] Los Angeles has gone two for five from three since halftime. Now Smart Pass to Hayes. Here’s Donic. Five to shoot. Mavericks with a rebound. Lively’s got 14. Yep. 14 rebounds for him tonight. Gives us a chance to catch up with Alli Leforce. Thank you guys. With the new 11-year 77 billion TV deal kicking in this season and tons of compelling teams. The NBA is in a great place. Commissioner Adam Silver said the NBA isn’t as strong as a position as it ever has been. Not just in my time as commissioner, he said, but in my over three decades at the league. Back door to you, Brian. That’s saying something. All right. Thank you, Ally. Dallas leading by seven. Pass to Flag. Aimura against Davis. [Applause] Here’s Flag. Screen by Lively. This one for three. Up top. Thompson. tries again. The Lakers with a rebound. Something’s off about him this quarter. He seems like he’s moving okay, but clearly something isn’t right. On the wing, Irving the three. Second chance shot. Easy money for Davis inside. Man, if you don’t put a body on Davis, he will destroy you. Second chance points a factor. One of the all-time great shooters, Tim. Klay Thompson has put on some legendary shooting displays. Well, BA, he has a picture perfect shooting stroke, and when he gets it going, it’s almost like he can’t miss no matter what the defense does to stop him. Here’s Flag. He’s got five. Tonight has just not been his night. It’s that simple. Luckily, they have found success elsewhere. Oh, LeBron just too much to handle inside. Forget his age. LeBron is still one of the strongest players in the league. So Jason Kids decided to call timeout here. He might have seen something he needs to review with his guys. Heat. Heat. [Applause] Some changes for Los Geles Larabia comes in for LeBron and Austin Reeves is subbed in for Donic. [Applause] The Mavericks lead by seven. [Applause] And here’s Russell. He’s been a consistent contributor, averaging just over 11 a game. Chalk one up for the defense. They forced a difficult shot. Here’s the rabbia. Smart outside. Outside Reeves. Back to Smart. [Applause] Shots blocked. Oh, what a fast break for Dallas. Pass to Christie. And there’s a whistle that goes on Jake Larabia. That’s foul number two for him. It’s time to take a glance again at that superb block. Showing no signs of giving up this lead. That block sent shock waves into the opposition sails. [Applause] There’s a minute 59 left in the third quarter. The three from Russell. Burries it from three. Russell’s got five now. Their strategy has been pretty simple here in the second half. Attack from three-point range. Well, they certainly have the shooters to do it. It’s just about finding that rhythm. Now, here’s Smart. Larabia outside from deep. Russell with the rebound. [Applause] We’ve got 123 left to play in the third quarter here to the paint. and Washington with the basket on the assist by Russell. And now a 12-point Maverick lead. [Applause] Los Angeles has gone two of six from downtown here in the second half. Aimura with the ball and it’s Marshall picking him up and he gets it to go as they call the foul. He’s on his way to the line for one more. And that’s the right decision when you’ve got a smaller man on you. This will be his third free throw of the game. [Applause] Free throw good. Aimura. Dallas leading by nine. Pass to Gaffford. Now Russell defended by Smart. [Applause] Marshall inside working on Aimura. Marshall passes to Russell. Four on the clock. The shot comes out. Smart with the defensive effort. Stolen by Russell. And then Russell with the dunk. And that’s what happens when you don’t take care of the ball. Hey, that makes the turnover hurt even more. All it takes is a half second of carelessness and someone will be rocking the rim going the other way. Here’s Reeves. The Mavs get their last shot to go. Here’s Smart. So, it’ll be two free throws. He was fouled in the active shooting. That one on Russell. And Smart is a very physical player. He doesn’t fear getting hit while trying to score. And this is his second trip to the line tonight. [Applause] And he knocks down the first one. [Applause] Oh, shoot. Rebound. Got to get it. Big go here. And so Smart nails them both. They’ve definitely made free throws look easy here in the second half. Two second difference between shot and game clock. Russell against Smart. [Music] [Applause] We’ve got 13 seconds left in the third quarter. Six on the shot clock. Gafford with a screen on Smart. The three from Washington. No luck on that one. And so it’s Klay Thompson making highlights for the Dallas Mavericks. He made a big impact scoring 12 points in the quarter. All right, we’ll get back to the action after this break. All right, let’s listen in. Head coach Jason Kidd is miked up. Understand something. Keep tough on the defensive. Stay the course. And Jason Kidd, he’s helped create an identity for this team. Wants them to stay in character. Yeah. And how they perform defensively. The effort they give on that end is a big part of that. The fourth quarter has arrived. So good to have you with us. Taking a look at the Mavericks. We’ve got Anthony Davis. Max Christie is out there with D’Angelo Russell. Then there’s PJ Washington. And it’s Gafford in at the five spot. Now here’s Washington. Pass to Davis. Some nice ball movement by Dallas. And it’s Gafford missing. Lakers trail by nine. Inside. Here’s Labraia. and he floats it in for the easy two. Credit the sweet setup on that one. Well, that’s what you’re trying to do offensively. Get a shot close to the rim. And so it’s Russell who brings up the ball for the Mavericks to the inside and Davis with the basket on the assist by Russell. Russell’s got three assists now in this one. About one minute played here in the fourth quarter. Russell against Smart. The three is up and the rebound goes to Dallas. Washington’s got four rebounds in the game. Christy passes it to Washington. Three-pointer. It’s Hayes with the rebound. Hayes has got his seventh rebound here tonight. Pass to Smart. 43. Rebound collected by Anthony Davis. Davis has got rebound number 12 here already in the game. Here’s Russell. And there’s a whistle. He’ll head to the line to shoot two. It’s on Jake Larabia. And what has made DLO a max player? He puts constant pressure on the defense. shooting two. First free throw is good. And there is an undeniable swagger to Russell’s game. He plays with a ton of confidence and knows what he can do out there. Connect checked in for Larabia [Applause] and good on the second. So he makes them both. That’s what he does. Rock solid at the line. Smart looking around. They set the screen, fires the three and Smart nails the triple. The Mavericks lead by eight. Left side Russell. Pass to Davis. [Applause] And that’s out of bounds. Dallas will retain possession. And that shot was going nowhere thanks to that aggressive swap. Yeah, I love that they maintain the defensive energy even when they’re behind. Luca Donic has checked in for the Lakers. Kyrie Irving’s checked in for the Mavericks. And the ball goes out of bounds. Last touch by connect. Is that just a miscommunication? It just can’t happen. Let’s hope they get on the same page. Fourth quarter play. We’re about two and a half minutes through it now. Davis misses. Lakers trail by eight. [Applause] Donic outside. Pass to Hayes. And here’s Achimura. He’s guarded by Irving. Smart right side. Donic outside. Just five to shoot. That’s in. Coming off an assist from Smart. Smart has got his third assist of the night. He’s looked like a totally different player in the second half. That’s his third triple. Now here’s Russell. from the elbow. Davis can’t hit. Los Angeles has gone two of four from the perimeter here in the fourth quarter. AI Murrell from long range and the rebound goes to Dallas. Davis has got rebound number 13 tonight with that one. Russell with the ball now. Donic defending [Applause] outside. Davis. [Applause] It’s Hayes with the rebound. Hayes has got rebound number nine now. What an effort here tonight. Smart rebound collected by Anthony Davis. Davis is and it just feels like his poor shooting has been contagious to his entire team as they find themselves trailing. [Applause] Gaffford with a screen on Smart down low. Tipped and he’s going for the oop here and it’s slammed in by AI Murray. They’re doing the job on both ends getting stops and attacking offensively and their allaround play has been the key to chipping away at this deficit. Dallas leading by three and we’ve got a timeout from Jason Kidd. He wants to make sure everyone is aligned given the situation right now. [Applause] [Music] Oh my god. [Music] [Applause] [Applause] I feel [Music] [Music] [Applause] clea. He’s checked in for the Lakers. James comes in for Smart. Dallas also making some changes. Marshall, he’s checked in for Washington. And Exom subbed in for Russell. And from the sideline, let’s catch up with Allie. Hey guys, I was able to catch the message that Jason Kidd was giving to his team. Coach was urging his team to play strong defense, reminding them no easy hoops, give effort, and help when needed. They do say defense wins championships, guys. And Ally, thanks. Now here’s Exom. Gafford finds Davis. No good. Had a chance to end the run there. He’s trying to find his shot, but at some point you have to start making these. Clea outside. Pass to Donic. Shot clock at five. Baseline try. Gafford grabs the miss. Gaffford’s got his seventh rebound of the game with that last one. [Applause] Irving the pass to Davis over Ashimura. Dallas no good that time either. And here are the Lakers. It’s Benade unanswered for them. Pass to Donic. Donic throwing his weight around. And what’s working here? Each guy is willing to make the next pass. Irving against Donic. Irving with it. [Applause] Outside Davis. [Applause] Count it. And the foul. It’s on Ruy Aimura. With the game on the line here in the fourth, he’s managed to hit only two of eight shots. And taking a quick look here at the hustle stats for the Lakers. You have to be a fan of the energy they played with on the defensive end. Active hands and feet and it’s come up big a few times for them. Well, it can be intimidating when you can’t find any daylight. And that’s been the case here. Disruptive defensively, blocking shots, altering shots, a real factor. And so it’s James with it. He brings it up for Los Angeles. So far in the fourth, they’ve allowed just six points. The Mavericks lead by three. Pass to Thompson from the ark and Aiden pulls it down here. The Lakers with the ball. They’ve outscored him 10 to two during this run. Oh, plenty of contact on that shot. Officials call the foul and he’ll take two free throws. Now that’s on Derek Lively. Got to be careful how you guard Aiden. He’s so creative at finding ways to draw fouls. [Applause] Got to get it. Big rebound. Let’s get it. Get it. That one’s off. And Los Angeles making a change here. Vanderbilt’s checked in. [Applause] So neither attempt will fall that time for him. Dallas leading by three. Here’s Flag. An easy two on the layup. A tough finish for Flag inside, but the young man just stayed committed. [Applause] [Applause] for Los Angeles. They’ve gotten five of 12 shot attempts to go so far in the fourth quarter. James outside. Look at LeBron with the strength to score through contact. They are passing the ball around. tremendously right now. Dallas has gone 0 for two from outside here in the fourth quarter. Donic against Irving beyond the arc and Reeves pulls it down. The Lakers have gotten six of their 13 shots to go. LeBron a smooth operator inside. They have no answer defensively inside. [Applause] Now here’s Irving. Thompson outside. [Applause] Has the flag. Fires the three. That one falls coming off Davis feed. And the Mavericks lead by four. And now that’s one three in each half. He is trying to make the most of those three-point opportunities. Oh, LeBron hammers it home. It doesn’t get much better than that. LeBron putting some muscle on the slam. How about that elevated look on the AT&T Connected Cam and so it’s Dallas with it. They held a 12-point lead earlier on the wing. Irving guarded by Donic and stolen by Reeves to the middle. It’s stolen by Lively on the wing. Thompson back to Davis uses the glass on the layup. Davis has got six in the quarter. Yeah, he continues to break down that defense. Davis is in a great rhythm right now. Donic passes to James. Here’s Vanderbilt checked by Davis. And a moment to check out who the Los Angeles Lakers have coming up. On Friday, they’ll be playing against James Harden and the Los Angeles Clippers. And then Sunday, they’ll be facing Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics. And for their matchup with Orlando, you’d be hardressed to find a more even pairing in the league. That one promises to be a really closely fought battle. No good on the free throw. Yeah. And once again, we’re seeing this team struggle at the line. And each miss adds pressure. He does not get the second one. You wonder what the score would be if they weren’t controlling the glass. The three from Thompson. It’s rebounded by Los Angeles. They are so close to taking the lead. This is one of those games where momentum is key. And once again, off the mark by Los Angeles. Dallas leading by four. Irving the pass to Lively and the foul on the shot. So he’ll take two from the free throw line. I like that. I mean some physical play inside. He’s not about to give up any easy baskets. [Applause] Take a break. Take a break. Two shots. Here we go. The free throw drops for Lively. [Applause] Here we go. And so he makes both from the line. Lakers trail by six. [Applause] James outside. [Applause] Here’s Donic launches it from deep. Another chance. Aton rejected by Lively. Now Vanderbilt stolen by Davis. [Applause] Now Irving Thompson outside now Davis. Irving outside. Five on the clock. Knocks down the trifecta. And Irving showing you his versatility. You can play him on or off the ball. Man, the defender really went after him, [Applause] two [Applause] rebound. Got to get it. Big rebound. Let’s get it. Get it. Get it. The first one falls [Applause] out. You got it. Donic hits them both. And here is Irving. Here’s Flag. Lively with a screen on James. Rebounded by Eaton. Oh, he is off from deep. Maybe it’s time to look for another option. Now Reeves. Yes, sir. Banking in the layup. Yeah, just a huge bucket for Reeves. How this guy goes undrafted, I’ll never know. Flag outside. Puts it up from 15. James rips down the board. Good contest. Can’t let him have open shots from mid-range. Now Donic outside. Reeves. He launches. It’s good from beyond the arc. And when you watch Reeves, he believes every shot is going in. I mean pleased with major confidence. Irving against Duch. [Applause] He gets the first and that makes it a three-point lead. And in terms of raw talent, Kyrie Irving is a step up from a lot of other guys. He just has an innate ability to create things out on the floor and make tricky shots. [Applause] So he goes two for two at the line and it’s a four-point ball game. Big free throws there extending this to a twopossession lead. Donic up top. He’s guarded by Irving. Donic is doubled. James stolen. There’s 49 seconds left to play in the fourth. Tyrie James rips down the board. Now Los Angeles with it. Here’s Aton. Oh, he goes to the glass with that one. Now that’s one to remember. What an impact on the game. What a big time shot. Those are the moments you dream about as a kid. Outside Thompson. Here’s flag. Check by James. Clock at six. Outside Thompson. Irving fires. No good from three. Here’s Donic. Great teamwork and great timing. Oh, spectacular play. And so Jason Kidd calls for the timeout. The pressure is on and he’s got a plan to share with his guys. [Applause] What are you All right. [Applause] Heat. Here’s [Applause] Irving from deep. Oh, off target from downtown. Regulation has ended and we are headed to overtime. We’ve got more hoops coming your way in just a minute. Glad to have you with us as we get going in overtime. Neither team giving an inch in this game. LeBron plays the three with Vanderbilt at the four. Luca and Reeves are the one on the two. And it’s Aiden in at the five down low. Wow. Oh, that’s a man on a mission right there. My lord, the agility on that size. Aidens on another level. Thompson outside. Thompson a screen on Donic. Irving 11 footer is good. Well, he’s a guy they look to go to and now you see why outside Vanderbilt. Here’s Donic from downtown. Luca lethal. I like when Donic goes right up with it, giving the defense no time to react. outside Lively. Here’s flag checked by James. Davis with a screen on James. Six to shoot. Now Davis cleared away by Vanderbilt. James outside [Applause] now. Reeves. Thompson with a steal. Here’s the break. Davis. Yes. Using that window. And I’ll tell you what, if you’re going to mix it up with Davis, you better be on your game. He’s so powerful inside. [Applause] And Donic has got the ball here for Los Angeles. They lead by one. And play stops. the whistle there on what looks like an illegal screen. And that’s two awful trips in a row resulting in turnovers [Music] for Dallas. They’ve gone two of three from the field as OT gets going now. Thompson. Kyrie. Oh, he misses the go-ahead basket. Well, Los Angeles shooting only 42%. Oh, using two hands to power it down. Yeah, and Aiden read the play perfectly and got out in front of it for the score off the break. Mavericks trail by three. Outside Thompson. [Applause] Here’s Lively. [Applause] Now Irving shoots a three. Oh, it’s off. We’re at OT here with just over two and a half minutes gone by. Vanderville, the screen on Thompson. Reed fires. He’s off from three. Dallas has gone 0 for two from deep. Not what they need this overtime. Yes, sir. With the three. Cold blooded. You can count on Thompson to keep an even temperature as the game heats up. Los Angeles has gone one of two from three-point range since regulation and the whistle blows on a backourt violation. Went over and back. Well, I think that was a product of the pressure. Take your eye off the ball for just a second and it can lead to a turnover. Donic against Irving. Lively with a screen on Donic. Irving. Oh, the slam off a fantastic lead pass. What a play. And just a terrific look from Irving. He has the awareness to spot the wide open man. Donic against Irving from 12 ft out. Davis pulls it down. The Mavericks have gotten four of seven shots to go during this overtime period. Anthony Davis going on top. Well, Davis is so reliable as a scoring option in that situation. Here’s Reeds. 125 left to play in overtime. Aiden, a screen on Thompson. Now, Donic. Aton. Oh, impressive footwork down low. Clutch points from Aton. We’ve seen him do it in the finals. DeAndre is a prime time player. Irving banks it home. Big shot and Kyrie trying to do it again. He is one of the game’s best closers. Here’s Donic. Oh, Donic unfased by the defense. Clutch play by Donic. He’s been doing this since he was a kid. The Mavericks have gotten six of nine attempts to fall during overtime. [Music] Irving flag outside. Lively with a screen on James. Now Irving just five on the clock. 18 ft out. Cleared away by Vanderbilt. They can’t go empty on any of their possession from here on out. And they need to continue to play with urgency. And they commit an intentional foul. We’ll see another one of those. So they get into the penalty. And a smart choice right there. I mean, you can’t allow them to just drain the clock. Here’s Irving. And an intentional foul right there. [Applause] Shoot. Two. [Applause] Good on the first. And that makes it a three-point lead. So, he gets them both and it’s a four-point ball game. Time called here. Los Angeles decides to talk it over. We’ve got 22 seconds left in overtime. From a coaching perspective, what are the keys to focus on here? Score quick, then foul. Then you have to hope for some missed free throws. Well, at this point, everything has to go your way to extend this game. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. [Applause] Hey, who’s watching him? Irving against Donic outside. Reeves. The three is in. Oh, the release, the height. Reeves really knows his three-point shot inside and out. And there’s the intentional foul. No choice but to stop the clock here. Yeah, and there’s no question they have to foul. Now, I’m sure they would have preferred to avoid it. Shoot two. He hits the first one and that’ll put him up two. [Applause] And so both free throws good and it’s a three-point game. Delivering exactly what they needed from the line. He secures the three-point lead. And so JJ Reick calls for the timeout. And coach didn’t want to take any chances in this situation, which is why he called the to. What do you think is going to be their best move at this point? If they leave the ark open, take it. But it may be safer to get a quick two and then foul. You’re definitely going to have to get a three here and then count on them to miss free throw. Heat. Heat. Heat up here. Vanderbelt. Oh, the long ball. No good. And they foul intentionally. That’s what they have to do at this point. So, the first one drops and that gives him a four-point cushion. [Applause] And so he drops them both. And it’s a five-point game. Taking care of business at the line, leaving this one out of reach. Vanderbilt fires. And so it’s Dallas winning this one. Things looked a little uneven for them down the stretch, but in overtime they took control. NBA, I don’t think they expected this one to be so hard fought, but when they went into overtime, they really poured the gas on the fire. And Ally Leforce has something for us on the sidelines. Hey Ally, Anthony, it was a great team victory tonight. What satisfied you most about this win? We just played hard, you know. We just played for each other. the ball was moving, wasn’t sticking, and you know, got him at the right place, you know, and that’s what we’ve been doing all night, all season, and you know, I’m just glad we came out with the win. Selfless basketball is a beautiful thing, guys. All right, Ally. Good stuff there. Thanks for that. Well, folks, that’s going to do it for now.
