Matt Mccardi came within a single swing of golf immortality on Sunday at the Bay Current Classic. The 27-year-old left-hander flirted with history, nearly shooting the elusive sub 60 round before a weward T-shot on his final hole cost him. Instead, he walked off Yokohama Country Club with an 11 under 60, the round of his life, but one that left him wondering what could have been. Just one swing away from 58, Mccardi said afterward, still smiling despite the heartbreak. It wouldn’t have been his first time going that low. He once carted a 59 at the 2021 Wyoming State Open. But this time, the stage was bigger and the stakes far higher. On a calm morning, softened by the previous day’s rain, McCarti caught fire early. Starting his round on the back nine, he birdied the first eight holes he played. An incredible stretch that left players and fans buzzing. He was 12 under through 11 holes, having birdied 10 of them. And suddenly the impossible began to feel real. With each swing, each putt, the thought of a 58 crept closer. After making the turn at four under, he poured in a 20-footer at the second hole and then rolled home another at the seventh. When he drained a 13- ft birdie putt at the eighth, the crowd knew he was flirting with history. One final birdie would make him only the second player ever to post a 58 in a PGA Tour event, joining Jim Furick. A par would have made him the 16th golfer to shoot 59. Standing on his final tea, Mccardi admitted he was feeling it. With three to go, I thought I can get two birdies and have a chance, he said. He took his driver, trying to guide it down the fairway, but instead the ball drifted left into the trees and vanished. “I thought I might have had a chance around the corner, but it probably hit one of those trees and kicked left,” he explained. “Tough way to finish a really good day.” After taking a penalty and playing a provisional, McCarti’s fourth shot stopped 8 ft from the cup. He calmly rolled it in for his only bogey of the day. number 58. Not even a 59, just an 11 under 60, still one of the best rounds ever played on tour. It beat his previous career low by two strokes and secured him a strong finish at 10 under for the tournament. “It’s weird to play that well and still come off the course feeling like this,” McCarti said with a laugh. “But it was a good day. I had a chance at it, which is fun.” His near miss reminded everyone just how rare such brilliance can be. The last player to shoot 59 on the PGA Tour was Jake Knap, who did it earlier this year at the Cognizant Classic. For Mccardi though, this round will be remembered not for the one swing that got away, but for 11 birdies, eight straight on the front nine, and a display of golf that came as close to perfect as it gets.
