Striking your Fairway Woods and Hybrids consistently can prove elusive for the majority of golfers.
How do you set-up for these clubs?
Where should I position the ball for these clubs?
Is it more of a wood swing, or an iron swing?
In this video, I’ll address the most common mistakes I see amateur golfers making when it comes to hitting hybrids and fairway woods.
Topping, Chunking, Fatting and Thinning will become a thing of the past if you can apply the information outlined in this video.

hybrids and Fairway Woods do you struggle to hit these clubs as well as the iron clubs in your bag are you confused as to how you’re supposed to set up with these clubs and is the swing the same with these as it is with the irons well you’re going to get all of those questions answered in today’s video it’s a topic that’s been requested multiple times on the channel so sit down and enjoy learning how to hit these clubs better than ever before so let’s just begin this discussion by clarifying the ball position for these clubs cuz I think that’s where people get it wrong to begin with I’ve got a seven iron here and I’ve also got the stack and tilt grid built onto the ground and if we were setting up for an iron shot I would have the ball position for an iron around three balls behind the center of the Swing so we have the center of the Swing as referenced by this line on the ground lead shoulder and the shaft create the radius here the arm and the shaft and for a seven iron I’m going to place that ball three balls back on the arc and create this angled radius that’s on the ground now that for an iron when it comes to a hybrid and a fairway wood you need to modify that slightly for a couple of reasons the number one reason is you don’t need to hit down as much with those longer clubs so that’s where we would start to change this I would say for a hybrid we’d move this something like two balls behind the center so I could take this angled radius and just reduce it slightly it’s important to still have some degree of downward angle of attack built into this shot but what I’ve done there for the hybrid is I’ve moved the ball one ball closer to the Target it’s reduced the amount of down that I have built into this shot but it hasn’t eliminated it completely and I think there’s a point at which some people think you’re supposed to sweep these clubs off of the ground and so much so what ends up happening is the ball position gets positioned too far forwards or people start to lean back with their swing to try and lift the ball into the ground sometimes people do both of those things that creates complete chaos when it comes to controlling low point of the swing and controlling contact golfers that do that will find that they hit the ground behind the ball or they miss the ground and by the time the club reaches the ball the club’s coming up and you top the ball if you top a lot of hybrid shots and Fairway Wood shots then pay attention to this lesson cuz there’s something in this for you and when it comes to the fairway wood that discussion just evolves slightly further we want slightly less down still but still down remember this ball is on the ground so it’s more like an iron shot than it is a driver because you still need to hit the ball first and the ground second when it does come to the fairywood I’d encourage you to move that ball ever so slightly closer to the center again so maybe it’s now just one ball behind the center that’s going to create a very small amount of down more of a sweep but we’re still hitting down and then the piece that you need to add to this ball position discussion is you must understand that you do not need to get behind the ball to try and lift it up in the air you do not need to shift your weight back or in the down swing lean back to try and lift the ball up that again is going to cause chaos with the low point and poor low point with these shots is the largest mistake I see made topping fatting thinning the ball poor contact is the number one problem and it comes from golfers who think they need to lift this ball into the air Club doesn’t have much loft on it they’re trying to get some elev and they find themselves falling back as already mentioned that moves the low Point further back creates problems with controlling any sort of contact and as a result that erratic chaotic strike pattern evolves from that point so keep the weight forward even for these longer clubs you don’t need to start changing the way you swing essentially it’s an iron swing with the ball position a bit more forward so let me go ahead and hit a couple with the hybrid demonstrating what I just said to you about keeping the weight forward in order to make good solid contact with these clubs I’ll also highlight another issue that I see many amateur golfers having with the wrists in the downswing that’s a casting of this club into the down swing we’re going to get to that in just a second I’ve put the ball two balls behind the center so I’ve got my ball position forward in my stance but not too far forward and I’m going to ensure that I keep my weight forward throughout the swing so that this lead shoulder stays in front of the ball by the time I make contact the one thing you want to check for yourself to see if you’re doing this correctly would be from this front view if you set up with the lead shoulder in one place and by the time you reach impact you see it moving away from the Target that would be a big red flag what you want is to put the lead shoulder in front of the ball at setup and then when you come back down to hit the ball you’re going to see that lead shoulder return to a very similar place it can even go slightly further forwards if you want to sure that that contact is compressed so that’s what I’m going to do go ahead take my setup I’ve got the ball a little more forward than I would have it with an iron but essentially I’m going to swing just like I would any regular iron shot that I was trying to hit from the ground not trying to lift the ball up into the air I get very solid contact little push it drew back slightly be reasonably happy with that 226 yd carry with a three hybrid so solid contact is the first thing I’m looking for when it comes to hitting these clubs and I think generally speaking that’s the biggest challenge you have with when it comes to these clubs it’s the consistency or lack of consistency of contact the other thing I see happen an awful lot of the time is because these clubs are more difficult to hit they require a bit more speed they have less Loft than an iron you then see golfers noticing that the ball doesn’t get very high and in an attempt to hit it higher they either shift their weight like I’ve already mentioned or as they’re swinging down towards the ball they start casting and letting their wrist angles come out prematurely in an attempt to try to scoop the ball up into the air that once again creates Havoc with the lowo control fat shots thin shots and top shots what we’ve already spoken about so if you think you’re still doing a pretty good job of keeping your weight forward but you still struggle to hit these clubs with any sort of consistency then it’s very possible that you’re losing your wrist angles prematurely in the downswing I’m going to show you with the help of the hack motion wrist sensor now how you can work on the downswing position the transition from backswing to downswing and reduce the casting movement that’s causing you all the problem we’re going to learn how to hold on to the wrist angles and hit these clubs more consistently so I have the 3-wood in my hand now and I have the hack motion wrist sensor on my lead wrist and I’m going to show you the casting problem that I see in so many gol offers especially when these clubs get longer why is that well there’s a couple of reasons I’ve alluded to one of them already they these clubs are harder to get up in the air they’re harder to get airborne because they have less Loft so you’ll see golfers trying to let the wrist angles out to try and scoop the ball up into the air in an attempt to hit it high and secondly these clubs are swung with more speed and as you swing with more speed the force that’s acting upon this club in the downswing is greater so that force is pulling these RIS angles out quicker let me explain with a longer Club the swing is faster I could try to keep my wrist angles in the downswing but the force at play on this club is greater than any other club the longer the club gets the greater the force therefore you have to try harder you have to work harder to maintain just the same amount of wrist angle so what should we be doing we should be getting to set up the wrist angle will be recognized here by the hack motion wrist sensor and then it will tell me to swing to the top whereby I hold the top position and I practice swinging down slowly maintaining this wrist angle you’ll see on the screen there how I was successful in that attempt and the great thing about this exercise first of all is it will identify good versus bad so now I go to the top let me do one poorly so if I was trying to throw this out and scoop and hit with some flipping you’re going to see very clearly there on the app that I did that incorrectly that’s something many of you will experience when you try this so correct would be to swing to the top and ever so slightly decrease this angle between the Shar and the lead arm take it down you’ll get the feedback there again on the app that you’re doing it correctly conversely you get to the Top If you start to widen this angle between the lead arm and the shaft you’re going to get the feedback that you did that wrong you can do this slowly to start with which many of you will need to in order to understand what this feels like and I’m doing it in a way here where I’m just just exercising without hitting the ball I’m doing dry drills or dry swings I would encourage you to do that yourself but you can transition and hit balls with this drill as well wearing the sensor so you can do the same drill this time I’m going to go to the top I can go ahead and hit one to the top swing through so the combination there of keeping my weight forward not leaning back to try and lift the ball up into the air the ball position in just the right place one behind the lead shoulder and the wrist angle is intact so I’m not trying to scoop the ball resulted in a really nicely struck shot of course that’s still a drill it’s a medium speed swing that ball only went 150 yards but I’m starting to learn what I’m supposed to do in order to hit these shots once again it’s not wholly dissimilar to what you need to do with an iron the problem is that as the swing increases the swing length the swing speed increases with these clubs any deficiencies that you have in your swing tend to get magnified so when need to make sure we’re doing everything as well as we possibly can when it comes to these longer clubs once again I can go ahead and hit one take it to the top contact was pretty good I swung a little bit faster there you’ll see on the on the hack motion sensor I still manag to get the lag piece of this equation correct so I’m not casting and again I managed to hit very slightly uh solid contact into that ball based on the ball position being just just right I wasn’t hitting down too much I wasn’t hitting up too much the ball position here is critical keeping the weight on the front is the second piece and the final piece of the puzzle is making sure you don’t cast or flip you’re going to maintain those wrist angles nice little push draw starting to get there with that club now one thing I will say before I finish this video is that a lot lot of you watching probably don’t need to have a 3-wood in your bag the speed uh that’s necessary to make the loft of a 3-wood work is in some cases greater than you have in your swing so you’d benefit hugely from substituting a 3-wood for a fivewood or a seven wood in many cases you’ll hit those more lofted Fairway Woods longer than you will a less lofted fairway wood and I know that doesn’t always make logical sense in your head but there’s a point of diminishing return if your speed is a little bit on the slow side whereby a lower lofted Fairway Wood like a 3-wood just won’t fly very far yet a fivewood or a seven wood with a little bit more Loft will launch higher have more Spin and actually stay in the air longer give that a try if you haven’t considered that option dropping down to a fivewood or a seven wood and in some cases even a 9wood can truly open up an entire world of new shots for you that you didn’t know existed I hope you enjoyed the video if you’d like to learn more about hack motion I’ll put some information down in the description of this video where you can click and learn more about it there’s also a discount code for this product should you choose to buy it if you’d like to learn more about the stack and tilt grid you can go to their website I’ll put that link down in the description as well and there’s a video that I’d encourage you to go and watch next which covers the topic of ball position with every club we incorporate the stack and tilt grid and I explain to you how the ball position changes for every Club in your bag so that you can get that part of your setup perfect every time

I asked and you delivered 😍
Thanks Rob. I will take this to the range and experiment ❤
Yes…hard to hit. Top and hit fat.
So confused about wrist angles…so the angle is not even released at all even when contacting the ball? The wrist angle at contact is similar to the top of the back swing? I have been trying to release the angle into the ball to get more distance and usually hit fat or top..sometimes get good contact. I am talking about a five wood. Had a nine wood but it broke.
Great video rob.🎉
I actually hit my fairways/hybrids much better than my irons…..in fact my irons are abysmal…
Just changing to S&T drastically improved my hybrid and woods off the deck. I don't think anyone ever told me to hit down on them, I was always taught to sweep them off the grass. I didn't know why I was better off hitting them off the fringe than the fairway.
Another Great lesson Rob. Like that concentration on ball position because I often have ball too far back. I also prefer. a 4-wood to a 3 so your 5-7 option sounds good to me. You are the best my friend and ALWAYS-learn something from your efforts. Be well-Russ
Hi Rob, I am a massive fan of you and Tom Saguto, my golf has improved immensely since following you both, but the last 2 rounds I have developed a bad case of the s….k’s 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️I can’t seem to shake them ,any simple advice .?? I’m from Australia so too far to come for a lesson
What Rob said at the 11:00 is so TRUE. I went through a period where I "lost" my 3 wood swing but could smash a hybrid just using the same swing as a 7 or 6 iron. It definitely kept me in the game and I took 5w and 3w out of my bag for a good while. Rob's teaching put my 3 wood back in the bag and it's nice to be able to use both FW wood and Hybrid when the situation calls for it.
Funny how I hit my 5 hybrid almost as far as my driver and now it makes sense! Thanks RC😊
Thanks Rob! I was having issues with my hybrid. I went to swinging like my irons and it was better but not great. The issue was not holding my wrist angle. Thanks again.
why can't we stick to irons rather than drifting to fairway woods or hybrids????
Most of us don't have the luxury of a Hackmotion device …………so any other analogy?
