Just an Average Golfer giving unbiased opinions on all things golf, product tests, Golf travel vlogs and golf news!

right welcome back to the channel and in today’s video I’m going to show you a couple of options that could help you significantly improve your driving if you’re looking to hit your driver further if you’re looking to hit your driver straighter and potentially increase ball speed then the two options in front of me could provide the ideal solution so the two clubs in question are of course Mini Drivers and uh I’m a massive fan of both of these products but in today’s video I’m indoors at Chester and North Wales Golf Academy and what I want to do is look at trackman data and uh let’s have a look exactly what makes these possibly so good for many average golfers and why they have such appeal now first of all in terms of setup these are both 13 and 1 12 degree heads and that’s that’ll be set at standard and first of all that additional loft is a big friend of most average golfers when it comes down to that long end of the bags that’s the first thing and first reason as to why these might solve your driving crisis the weighting system is exactly the same heavier weight at the back end uh lighter weight at that front end and then of course there is a shorter shaft which again for me gives far greater control now the big question is is it all a case of what’s in my head is it really happening and trackman will tell me exactly that so without further Ado let’s hit some balls and find out which one of these is probably it which one of these is better than the other are they exactly the same and why you might choose one over the other 133 ball speed 223 carry right down the middle 2 and 1 12,000 revs of spin 16 laune a ball speed of 135 off a 93 Club head speed which basically means that the the ratio the performance forance is really good in terms of that club head speed and ball speed relationship and that’s really all I’m looking for previous ball I think carried 224 right down the middle and that’s what this thing does all day every day well perhaps not every day but the main thing is it’s consistent because I’m finding in the middle of that club face I’m going to carry on collecting data with this being the tailor made club and let’s see where we end up in terms of averages but those last two shots that I’ve hit were pretty much exactly where I’d expect to be and want to be with this kind of Club but the important bit is that dispersion and control elements the first ball with a cowy good thing is down the middle bad thing is spinning very high and a um carry distance of only 208 because of that uh still decent ball speed but like I said launching perhaps a little Tad too high but more importantly the spin number was the issue with that first ball let’s try another one whilst the camera’s on before I start to go and collect data with the Calla product I mean first of all there’ll be a lot of you want to know the difference between these two the biggest one is for me is the sound and feel that’s not going to be a big issue because you’re all going to be interested in performance but it is a thing and they look very differently as well and uh you’re spending a fair bit of money even though the colorway is quite a bit more expensive than the other thing is been able to get hold of the tailor made product it’s a 137 yeah starting to creep up a little bit 215 carry still spinning extremely high which would be a little bit of a concern if that continues so I will carry on hitting balls with this and let’s see where we get to we got a little bit of distance to catch up on the tailor made product at the moment and we’ve got to see that spin number come down I’m not going to adjust any settings at this point and uh the direct comparison and head-to-head will be in exactly the same setup that’s 13 1 12° so caway we need to do a bit of extra work and uh a bit more effort right so I’m pretty much finished with collecting the Callaway data and don’t go anywhere because if you are interested in either of these two models or just have an interest in how two clubs perform very differently even though on paper they should be exactly the same then stick around because trust me the numbers are very different between product a and product B I won’t tell you in which way just yet but uh yeah they are very different indeed the one thing that has remained the same is we’ve been fairly consistent with both crubs well we’ve consistently been down the middle which is one of the things we tried to achieve but perhaps we’re slightly failing in one other key element with the Callaway product in hand right so many may ask why am I doing a head-to-head with two products have been out quite some time and uh it’s a good question and that’s because the majority of tested I’ve done with these products has been out on the golf course I’ve done a little bit with trackman in the individual videos but never a sort of head-to-head of this sort and I think that you know right now people will be considering maybe buying a new driver in January that’s when all the big launches happen and uh these two products very much still have their place in my opinion if you’re looking for control and not a huge drop off in distance because these aren’t going to be the longest driver you’re ever going to put in the bag for obvious reasons what you’re seeing on screen right now is the data I collected with the tailor made product uh 46 seven shots there’s not too many cuz uh it’s hard graft it and driver and what you’ll see is this group in here are very much centered and we’ve got four perhaps five even really down the center line one issue was a ball that leaked out to the right hand side inevitably that is going to happen but overall we’ve got seven drives that are certainly in play that one maybe uh in the rof but we’ve certainly got six that are down the middle of the Fairway we’ve then got an average carrier 224 a average Club head speed 93 and a ball speed of 137 the ratio is good it’s not brilliant but it’s a decent enough ratio between the two the spin number is maintained a good consistent level and the ball is launching at 15.3 so many of you will hit driver with a club head speed between 90 and 95 mph so straight away this sits in an area where it might appeal to you and the issue the bit that’s going to help is the Loft that’s on that club at 132° going to mean the ball is still going to launch quite high and you’re not going to spin it too high or at least it’s not in my hands either so overall a really good set of numbers 224 carry is probably no more than 5 10 yards down on what my optimal numbers are with driver so if we then switch up into the um calway product and we have a similar screen what you’ll see is a very tight ratio in terms of hitting a fairway every ball has hit the Fairway and we’ve got two four six we got seven again you got seven shots again that was uh by luck not judgment but what you’ll also notice is a considerable drop off in average carry distance largely down to I suppose this ball but there’s certainly a lot in around that 210 carry which we’ll have a look in a second or two we’re launching pretty similar 158 cled speed was down a tad a mile or two which would also account for a little drop off in car distance so we can bear that in mind but the main issue here the the the number that sticks out like a sore thumb as they say is that spin rate that spin rate at 32 with a launch angle of 158 is causing me a problem and that’s causing me a problem it doesn’t necessarily mean it would cause you because your swing characteristics could be totally different than mine and that’s why custom fit and looking at analyzing dates like this is hugely important so if we go back to the um the tables so I can see both we got that 213 carry we’ve almost lost we’ve lost 11 yards in carry distance ball speed we’ve lost 4 mph in ball speed you could account for Club head speed there’s 2 mph difference in club head speed and again you would ask well why is that happened what caused that difference is it down to the different shaft type but then like I said you’ve got this alarming figure where we’ve got a very consistent two4 spin with the mini driver the Callaway that is and we got a 32 spin which is causing the significant difference they launched like I said pretty similar the key takeaway for this is with some tweaks in the mini driver we could definitely optimize performance and bring that spin number down and hopefully find a balance that will strike a balance between all those data parameters that’s what custom fit can do and that’s what the adjustability in a driver head can do it may also mean that we can look at shaft options as well so the difference isn’t maybe as significant as it looks as that 11 yard carry I think in actual fact these clubs performed very very similar in indeed so there’s nothing to split on I think the preference is down to your own individual what you like the look of what you like the sound and feel of and they’re making sure as I always say you get custom fit correctly and get the Optimal Performance out of any club you buy CU clearly there are differences and there are things that you can change within that custom fit that ensure you get well you’re paying a lot of money you’ve got to make sure you get it right and it works for you out on the fairways right that’s me done as ever thank you for watching don’t forget to hit that subscribe button give me some feedback I ask or I don’t ask rather hit the like button it makes a big difference to the YouTube analytics and that would be a bit of a help for the channel but for now that’s me done thanks for watching and I will see you all soon

  1. Purchased the TM Mini Brnr earlier this year 11.5 dg positioned the heavyweight forward and boom, been a game changer for me so accurate

  2. Just missed out on the Taylormade BRNR Mini Driver 2024 a few weeks ago.

Picking up an Alta CB 65 Black 3 Wood shaft to put in my Ping G430 MAX driver … honestly, I can't wait to see if I can hit my driver straighter and more accurate with the shorter shaft.

  3. I had a mini driver, should have kept it. Andy, I would have loved to have seen you play around with the Callaway settings to see if you could have gotten that spin number down.

  4. I have the TM mini driver and love it, 13.5° and use it on the tighter holes. It’s about 10 to 15 yards shorter than any of the drivers I use, but I love my drivers and they were great and I do hit them pretty straight as they are forgiving models so I don’t need to abandon them to put this in the bag. The TM mini driver just looks classy and retro and it sounds crunchy and produces great results. A great addition to any bag!

  5. I built up a Mizuno 230 Max driver, tour AD VR6 shaft stiff, tip trimmed and cut to 44.75" final length, MCC teams +4 black grip.

Its a keeper. I glued the adapter and trimmed/gripped it myself.

Love being a club builder. ⛳

    Keeper.

  6. I'm pretty happy with my driver and have always hit driver pretty well. I only hit my 3 wood off the tee on tight par 4's. Im seriously considering replacing the 3 wood with the mini driver. I will use it on the tight par 4's and probably holes where I dont need max distance. I find that hitting driver just takes a toll on my 62 year old body.

  7. Gamed the Cobra LTDx for the longest time but also had my TM mini Brnr in place of my 3 wood. Went out of sorts with my driver and took it out of the bag entirely. Adjusted loft on the Brnr to 16.5 and it's MONEY off the tee. Probably averaging 225-230 with it (Not a long hitter at all). Funny enough my bag goes as follows Brnr, 5 wood, 7 wood, 9 wood, 11 wood, 7-PW Takomo 301CBs and a Cleveland smart sole chipper, oh and my LAB DF2.1. Playing pretty good rounds lately. Averaging 85-86.

I do switch iron sets more than most however. My stealth HDs and Cleveland XL 2s are in the rotation when I'm going through a slump with the CBs.

Sorry for long post. Once you get started it's hard to stop lol.

  8. I picked up a used 13.5 TM BRNR and have been struggling with it a bit. Do you setup like a regular driver (hit up on the ball / higher tee position) or a fairway wood?

  9. I was really looking for a shorter and more crooked driver for next year but you changed my mind! 😂 always watch the reviews but I am spending my money on a LAB!

  10. Love it! I'd really like to see the BRNR at 11.5 vs 13.5 and regular vs Stiff.

Is yours Reg or Stiff? Can you give us a few swings at 11.5 and maybe a few at 15.5?

    Keep up the great videos!

  11. @TheAverageGolfer Hi Andy and thanks for the video. Given your results I think it would have been interesting to swap the weights in the Calloway to see if launch and backspin would have come down and captured some more of the Low Spin capabilities with just the weights switched. That would be a simple change for your average player. Not everyone can jump into trying different shafts quite so easily. Thanks again!

  12. For any golfer that plays a course with lots or some tight holes a Fairway finder club could be invaluable for good scoring. The dispersion for both clubs looked very good, however the Callaway definitely won that contest and I’m sure the higher spin helped it in that regard. Nice review Andy.

  13. Thank you Andy. The Mini Driver is the club I like to use. But only after a proper fitting. 😊😊😊

  14. Have the TM driver in 13.5 loft and love most things about it. The main problem though is the lack of shaft options- I’m not sure the stock shaft is ideal for me but going to a fitter and buying a more suitable shaft is going to add significant cost to an already expensive club. So reluctantly may decide to sell it and look at other options.

  15. Would like to see these mini drivers compared to an adjustable driver which has a shorter shaft and lofted to 12 degrees. Replaced my 45.75" Ping G430 Max shaft with a 44.5" shaft (£100 from Ping). Dispersion/control greatly improved and no loss of distance as I find the center much more. If I absolutely must find the fairway i pull out the 5 wood

  16. To be fair your club head speed was down 2 mph on the Callaway so at the same club head speed it would gain 5 yards in carry. The mini's are ok but I can't afford to give up the distance my club head speed is around 80 mph but I'm 82.

  17. Hi Andy, haven’t read all the comments (other than the “click bait” geezer) so some of this may be duplicated. Really appreciate your videos and I’m really interested in the mini drivers. All You tubers push custom fitting and, whilst I know it’s the best thing to do, not all of us can afford a session. So, to avoid getting the wrong set up from the normal golf shop “fitters”, is there a way to determine what is right for you? And don’t listen to the keyboard warriors, you’re doing a great job (and yes, “you’re” is the correct spelling)!! Cheers, PP from Down Under

  18. You may have touched on this in your earlier reviews of these two clubs (if so, my apologies), but have you found one more versatile than the other . . . by which I mean does one or the other not perform as well depending on whether you’re hitting off a tee or from the fairway? I’ve read/watched reviews indicating that the Callaway is not as successful off the fairway as the TM. Do you have any thoughts on this?

  19. I own both, I prefer the Callaway in 11.5 head, lofted up one click with the weights switched (heavier forward) and it's the best driver I have ever owned

  20. Don't you think brands bring out too many driver's each year? I don't think anyone can be consistent if they can hit their driver pretty straight in the first place, no matter the make or model.
Good video, just a suggestion why not get some one on who is a 20+ handicap and get them to use the drivers you said are forgiving, see if that is the case.
Me personally I play 30–40 rounds of golf per year, and they say you should replace your driver every 5 years. If you play less than that, you can wait 5–7 years, so why do brands bring one out every year, ridiculous just another money marketing, yes professional golfers I can see they might want to use the newest etc, but brands pray on the golf snobs and mindset of every golf who thinks they are going to be the next big thing in golf, the dreamers 😂
