I Turned My iPhone (GolfBoy App) Into a $9000 Golf Simulator…The Results Will SHOCK You

Right guys, today I’ve got my launch monitor with me. Can you guess where it is? Watch this. It’s called Golf Boy. It’s a free app for your phone which literally turns your phone into like a mini track. Man, let’s test this. Let’s see if this is any good because if it is, this is unbelievable. People can get access to launch monitor data. Everybody’s got one of these. So, let’s give it a try. Let’s put it to the test versus another launch monitor. Indoor testing, outdoor testing. Let’s go and check out how good Golf Boy is and let’s see if it’s worth downloading. So, let’s dive into what Golf Boy actually is. So, picture this. You download a free app on your phone. You stick it on a tripod and suddenly you’ve turned your phone into a mini launch monitor. And Golf Boy basically using your camera and some really clever technology starts to give you some data that you normally need really expensive pieces of kit to give yourself access to. Let’s put Golf Boy to the test. Right now, we’re going to hit three pitch shots, half wedges, three full wedges, three full seven irons, and let’s compare golf boy versus a £10,000 launch monitor. Let’s see how this compares. Right, let’s hit a little wedge shot. So, first wedge shot of the day [Music] that has gone with Golf Boy 30 yards and 36 on GC3. So to be honest, because it doesn’t pick up the spin rate, I’m really looking at carry distance here. So let’s compare carry distance with wedges and carry distances with 7 iron because in reality when you’re working towards yardages, that is the only thing that matters. So that one there was 28 yards of carry with Golf Boy and then 30 yards of carry with GC3. So 2 yards out in terms of carry. If you’re practicing wedges or working on wedges, I would always be going to carry distance, not total. So, there’s one that’s two yards apart. There’s another one that’s given us 36 carry versus 40 yards carry. So, again, pretty close. I’m quite happy with that, to be honest. Four yards is not much of a difference. And then let’s go let’s go a little bit longer. So that was a bit longer there. That is saying 55 yards of carry and GC362. So not a million miles out to be honest. Again, if it’s consistent throughout the launch direction is almost exactly the same. Ball speed number again almost exactly the same. Just the fact it doesn’t pick up spin is going to have some slight differences. If six yards is as far as it’s going to be out, it’s very good for free. Right, let’s go fill out wedge. We’ve stuck a little light down just so the there’s a bit of shadow there just in case that’s affecting anything. So, let’s go full swing wedge. So, that felt really nice. Good strike. So, golf boy says 77. Look at the visual. I love the visual. So good. Ball speed 71. Carry 77, ball speed 74, carry 87. So, not far away at all. Let’s go take two. You know what? I’m going to change golf ball. Look at this little guy. There we go. We’ve got the Scotland flag golf ball. Do you know what? That might maybe maybe change the way things are picked up. So, let’s give this another go. Let’s go full swing. Just nice and smooth. 72 yards of carry. 67 ball speed, 69 ball speed, 78 yds of carry, very close. This total and that carry were very similar. So, it’s not a million miles away. And then what you can also do is if in practice you can sort of play about with the light settings and the golf ball settings. So, you can customize your golf ball. So, say you think it’s maybe consistently 5 yards less than your normal, you can customize your golf ball. So, let’s say we go custom golf ball times 1.03. That brings us on to the exact same numbers. So, let’s watch this. And there is a bit of trial and error is finding the settings that are right. But once you’ve done that, that’s when this really starts to kick in as an amazing tool. So, that one’s a bit thinny. So, we’ve got 68 yds of carry, 74 yards of carry. So, it’s it’s kind of four, five, sometimes two. And to be honest, that is such a small amount. If you put a Trackman, a GC quad, if you put a Garmin, if you had a whole range of launch monitors, they’re all going to be within a few yards of one another. Rubbish ones would be much further out, but it’s it’s it’s close for me. With these shots, we could go this versus Trackman and there would be a few yards out. There would be a slight difference. So, a slight difference for me is not a dealbreaker. The fact that this is free, you can be at home whacking into a net, you can be on the range, you can be anywhere. The fact that you can actually get numbers that you can trust, like genuinely trust. So, they are numbers that you can actually trust. So, 81 85 yards carry versus 88, they are numbers that you can actually trust. None so far have been wo that’s nowhere near what it actually was. None of them have been like that. So, let’s do seven iron. So, when we do 7 iron, we just change the height setting. So, there’s a height setting on the Golf Boy tripod for different distances of shots. So, for example, if you’ve got driver, this tripod is going to be taller than me cuz it’s got the high setting. If it’s sort of middle range shots, 150 plus, you’ve got it on mid and it’s for the shorter ones that we have it on low. Let’s try a few 7 oz. So, first shot, golf boy 7. Let’s see how it goes. So, that felt pretty nice. So, that’s saying 147 carry versus 156. Little bit out. 89 yards. Not a dealbreaker for me. Again, we can just adjust the settings to allow for that ball speed 107. Ball speed 111. So, it’s just a slight difference in the ball speed. Okay, shot number two, seven iron. Let’s try and go more fad for this one just in case that or Healey. Let’s see. 133 for the carry versus 141. So, as you can see, this is very very consistently six yards out, I would say, on average, which on the grand scheme of things is nothing. Like, it’s really not much. If you take free with a a very small subscription every month versus a 10 grand unit, it’s really really good. And because it’s consistent, that’s what I’m saying. You could literally click the setting, do a custom ball setting. So, obviously, it depends on what you have. You might be in a dark spot, you might be on the range, it depends on what kind of golf ball you use. So, it’s worth if you can try it against something else or against the numbers that you would expect to see and then just adjust it. And then once you’ve found that, so let’s go 1.04 just to get it a little bit closer. But once you’ve found that happy medium, it’s picking up every single time. This £4,000, $5,000 launch monitors that have misreads and don’t pick up. We’ve not had one yet. Still not had one. I’ve not had one yet. Oh, that felt a bit funky. But it’s down the middle. So, we’ve got 145 carry on Golf Boy versus 148 on GC3. So, now we’re talking. So, it is there just a when you first set it up, little bit of trial and error. Check your golf ball, check the course setting, check the light once you’re used to it, once this is dialed in. So, now I would just leave that. That is how I want it set. Now, I’m going to get accurate numbers, which is nuts. On your phone, £10,000. Wild. Let’s go and test it outside. So, we’ve done some indoor testing. We’ve tested sand wedge. We’ve tested seven iron. We’re going to do this outside. We’re going to do some testing outside. We’re going to hit some seven irons. And then we’re going to get the big dog out. We’re going to get driver out. See how golf boy performs. How good is this on your phone launch monitor? Right, we’ve stuck it on the tripod. We’ll just do the same thing. We’re just going to set the target line down around about here. So, we’ve got that set as our target line. Now, it’s time to go. What we’re going to do, this is a good fair way to do it. We are going to hit our ball onto the fairway. We’re going to bushel it. We’re going to zap it with a rangefinder and see how close together they are. Right, let’s get started with some outdoor testing. I’ve hit a couple of 7 irons just to warm up. We are going to give it the first go outside. So, we’ve got the target set. I’ll just confirm that we’re going down in this direction and we’re going to zap it with a rangefinder. So, we’re going to hit one. We’re going going on golf boy here. We’re going to hit one. Get the distance. Oh, that was chunky. Let’s have a look at that. 119. That could be a good test, actually. So, chunky chunky. Golf boy says 119 total distance, 111 carry. Let’s see how accurate that is. 129. So, it was a little bit off, but that was pretty horrendous for the first shot. And that’s the thing. It is going to get some of these just slightly out, especially when it’s so chunky. Golf Boy doesn’t read the spin. But I got the launch direction absolutely bang on. The coolest thing is the really slow motion visual. I love that. That’s See, to be honest, that is my favorite thing about it. I think it’s absolutely superb. Just having the ability to see what your club is doing through the impact area is invaluable. You just can’t get that with a lot of stuff. I I love that. I think even just for the for the monthly fee alone, just having that ability, I love that. That’s what I love about if anyone’s ever used a Trackman IO, which is the overhead Trackman at any golf sims. That’s what’s really, really cool about that new feature. So, I like that. So, we’ll give it another go. Hopefully, we hit this one a little bit better. So, we get a truer reflection here. That was also a little bit chunky, but not as much. saying 141 carry 155 total. We can see it was chunky. We can see it was slightly off the heel. That’s also why it didn’t feel very good. And let’s have a look at that one. That ball a little bit further. So, should be a decent reflection. And 144. So, 141 carry on golf boy. I’ve just zapped it at 144. So, that’s really really accurate. Total distance here. We’re hitting onto an ups slope. So, it’s not going to get any kind of run out. So only three yards out between the carry and the total distance here, which I think was the carry. So it’s only about two, three yards out. So again, really, really accurate. Right, the ultimate test. Big dog. So we’re going to change tripod height to high. We’re going to bring this up to the high setting cuz we’re hopefully going to give the big dog a smash. We’re going to set the launch direction. So we’re going to put our golf club down. That is where we’re hoping. That’s where we’re hoping to hit a drive. That’s us, right? Let’s tee up big dog. Let’s get the driver out. We’re in the zone. We are ready to go. We’ll just do the same test. We should see this ball. When we get the rangefinder out, we should see it. So, short par4. Let’s have a bash at this. Right, driver time. Let’s test it out. So, this is the first time I’ve tested the driver out with Golf Boy. So, so far, wedges are pretty accurate. Irons again pretty accurate. The only thing I would stress about this, and this is where you’ll get wrong readings. You have to make sure you get the settings right. It’s not just some sort of launch monitor where you stick it down and all of a sudden it’s perfect from the get- go. You have to make sure that you’ve got the golf ball settings right. You have to make sure you’ve got the tripod settings right. Really important. So, just follow those instructions. That would be the only downside. You might think it’s getting you wrong readings, but quite often it’s how you set it up. So, if you follow those instructions to the tea, you’ll get some good readings. There’s some good stuff here. And again, I love that slow motion camera. It’s probably my favorite thing. So, let’s get the driver out. Let’s give it a bash. So, pretty straight with the ball flight. Pretty bang on to the start line. says launch direction was 3.5 right. Launch angle 11. I would agree with that. It’s not wasn’t mega mega high. I don’t have a huge high ball flight. 242 carry 267 total. We’re just going to zap that right now. Let’s give it a zap. So I can see it. So it’s just short of the bunker. And there’s a bunker at 270. This is seen 267. That ball is literally like 2 or 3 yards short of that bunker. That’s impressive. So, obviously the things it’s not going to get, it doesn’t measure spin. So, you’re not going to get spin rates. So, because it doesn’t measure spin, you’re not going to get curvature. It will just literally give you the start direction. So, when you put your club down, when you set the target line, it will tell you whether you’re a couple of degrees left of that, couple of degrees right of that. It’s not going to give you curvature, but what we’ve got to remember is it’s on your phone. It’s free or free to an extent. It’s $7 a month once you start to unlock it. We would be really spoiled if we got that. We’d really be pushing it if we thought we could get all that information. But to get the carry distance, the total distance, the start line, the launch, so much of this right out on the golf course is absolutely superb. So, one of the really cool things about the Golf Boy app, we’ve got the launch monitor, we’ve got putting, we’ve got a putting simulator, which we’ll test, and we’ve got a course simulator. So you can click on the round and go through a whole variety of golf courses. And this is just cool if you’ve got a net, if you’re at home, if you want to test things out in a random situation. You’re not always using the same club. There’s lots of different designed golf courses. People who have the app design courses from putting to par three to full length golf courses. And you can, we’re going to Japan here. You can just work your way through this and putting will be simulated, but it’s just another cool feature. So, we’ve got this down. You can see the launch monitor in the top leftand corner. We’ve got 143. I’m just going to hit pitch and wedge just so it’s short and then I can chip on with the next one. So, 143. We can hit this shot. We can shank this shot. That definitely went to the right, which was pretty accurate. And we’ve got 20 yards. 24 yards left. Then we can put one down. We’ve got 24 yards. Let’s hit a little 24 yard shot. Shot two. Two putt. I would say that went about 24 yards. And then you can click on to the next hole. So obviously that’s a good example. We shanked one that did show that the ball went to the right. And it just gives you that scenario where if you’re in a map, if you’re at home, you’re into a sim, you’re into a net, whatever you may be doing, you can just at the end of the practice, just click on golf course, practice for 5, 10 minutes, just go through the motion of driver, 7 iron, wedge, and start to mimic what happens on the golf course. So, it’s just another cool feature. You might get dialed in with some wedge shots, especially with the the little par three course. You can work on your 50 yards, your 70 yards inside 120 just by doing that so it can keep you sharp when you’re practicing. I just want to hit one more drive. So, end of golf course. Go back to the high setting. Let’s get the big dog out once more. I think I need to get a little bit taller for this. Let’s get the driver out. Shot. Launch monitor. Let’s go one more drive. I just want I want another shot. I found a dodgy looking golf ball in the bag. I found a dodgy looking golf ball in the bag. I just want one more shot of the driver. Let’s go. One more shot of the driver here. Well, it’s off to the right. Let’s see. Did that register? That definitely went off to the right. We can see the face is open. 260. That would probably be about right. If I leave the face open, I’m going to lose distance. So, again, absolutely love this. We can see in the camera the face is open. We can see the strike is middled. So it just gives you an idea of what’s happened. Why have you hit that shot? And compare that to normal launch monitors where it maybe gives you swing path, face to path, club face. It can all get quite confusing. But actually just seeing an image of where have you struck it on the face, what has your club face been like at impact tells you why you’ve had that shot and also gives you a bit of a guide as to where you need to go to fix it. So as a little teaching tool or a feedback tool to help you with your golf. That’s my favorite part about this whole thing. The whole app, the fact you can see that in slow motion is invaluable. And then last but not least, there’s the putting sim. So we come out of launch monitor mode. We go into putting simulator and it’s set at 10 ft. So obviously this is a little bit longer than 10 ft. So we’re set at 10 ft. You can also select random target. So if you’re trying to get a feel for how far this length of swing goes versus that length of swing versus this length of swing. And if you want to work on distance control, that sort of randomized game can be really really helpful. You can also use Golf Boy for putting, which is absolutely superb to dial in your distance control, get a feel for different lenses, swings, and it also gives you feedback whether you hold the part or not, how far it’s gone, and way more. So, we can change the target, we can make it random targets, and you can just start to hone in on the distance of your putts, whether that’s at home on a putting mat, on the carpet, on your putting green. The good thing is you can just start to gauge the distance and start to get a feel for different lengths of swings, different distances of putts, and it’s just a really good thing that you can try. And also, the fact that you can change the speed of the greens is really good. So, say you’ve got a big toe to big toe length of swing. Let’s say on a green with a stump meter of eight. Let’s say that goes 10 ft. You can then change that to 10 on the stump or 11 on the stump. do the same length of swing and then see how far that would go. Say you’ve went from slow greens on your home course and all of a sudden you know that you’re going to play on quick greens. You can change the stimp, get the feel for different lengths of swings and then hopefully that then helps you with your next round of golf on those quicker greens. So just another nice addition. I think most people are going to use this for the launch monitor part. But the fact that you’ve got putting, the fact that you’ve got golf course simulation just adds some cool other features to it which are only going to help with your practice. You can get some nice other things from it. Highly recommended. Just make sure that you get all the settings right and this can be a phenomenal tool to help you with your golf. So there we have it. So my summary of Golf Boy, I’m going to give all the pros, all the cons. The pros are it’s free to it’s free to very very cheap. It’s portable. You can do it inside, outside. It also has some other different options from golf course simulator to putting simulator. So many different bits and pieces other than launch monitor. Biggest pro for me, the big winner is absolutely the slow motion camera. So, so good. So, so beneficial and for me that justifies the price on its own. The cons, it’s maybe a little bit fiddly. Um, in terms of in comparison to a normal launch monitor, it’s not put it down, good to go. You have to get the setting right. It doesn’t take long, but you have to make sure that the tripod is set at the correct height. You need to make sure that the golf ball is correct. So, if you’re using a range ball, you just need to make sure you get it right. That is the only con. Other than that, for the price, for the portability, for everything, it’s an unbelievable tool piece of kit that you can have and I would highly recommend if you practice at home or you’re looking down the route of a launch monitor. It’ be a really really good place to start and it’s it’s something that everyone could have. So, highly recommend it. Again, if you want that discount, just check out the description link below. 1. I agree with you about a standard deviation between different tech. However, a 6-10 yard difference is a full club difference. Still, for free it’s hard to argue against, especially since you can adjust for the error. Thank you.

  2. It's clearly an interesting product for free but not something you could reliably use for yardages as 4 yards on a wedge is 12 feet on the green which is massive. Also you said at the start if you have a phone you can use the launch monitor which is wrong. If you have an IPHONE you can use the launch monitor if you have and ANDROID you can't!! It does sound like you are desperately trying to sell it despite the obvious issues 🤷‍♂
